Kia Corp has gone through some amazing changes in the last few months, and it seems like there is no stopping this automaker. Winning awards and topping the charts, Kia Corp is the highest ranked mass-market automaker, according to the 2020 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. Keyword: mass-market. Well, that is until now. Kia Corp is growing and expanding its range, slowly entering the luxury segment and pushing competitors aside while still offering a better price. Kia Corp is everywhere these days. We’re not saying the automaker is going to dominate the auto industry, but I for one welcome our new automotive overlords.
It’s kind of like Google at this point – Kia Corp has its hands in a lot of pockets, and the luxury car segment is in its crosshairs. Earlier this year, in March 2021, Kia revealed the Kia K8, a luxury sport sedan. We got a look at the interior and the exterior of the Kia K8, and we’re pretty impressed. The new signature frameless ‘tiger nose’ grille of the front fascia gives Kia models a new look, and an astronomical theme has entered the design. The front lamp turn signals resemble a nebula dust cloud, and this theme finds its way into the interior cabin with ‘Star Cloud’ lighting that projects glittering and interactive ambient lighting.(more…)
Kia Motors and the Hyundai Motor Group as a whole are starting to revolutionize the way consumers use and communicate with their cars. Bluetooth wireless technology and voice commands have been around for several years now, but people were using a service or feature, not exactly talking to the car like we talk to Amazon Alexa or Google Home. Kia Motors isn’t quite there yet, but the automaker is inching closer as more technology is made available. Last year it was “Hello Kia”, an Intelligent Personal Agent, and this year it’s a joint venture between Kia and Google.
When you’re working with Google, you’ve finally become a legend. With the new “Kia Service” Google Voice Assistant, everyone with an Android or Google-powered phone with eventually get to use this new feature. Eventually, because the pilot phase for this feature has been launched all the way in Ireland. Why Ireland? Aside from the fact that the “Kia Service” Google Voice Assistant App was jointly developed by Kia Europe and Kia Ireland, I tried to test it on my Google Pixel 4a – no dice.
Kia Motors is an automaker that is either falling apart or building a conglomerate, because like the Hindu god, Durga, Kia has sprouted many arms and is working in multiple directions for the future. From electric vehicles (EV6) to multi-purpose vehicles (Carnival MPV), this South Korean automaker is one surprise after another. Year-after-year, Kia Motors ranks high in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, but only among mass-market vehicle brands, not all of them. To change that, the newest venture from Kia Motors is the luxury sports sedan, the K8, to dominate the luxury car segment as well. We’ve talked exterior, we’ve checked out the interior, now let’s look at some specs of the Kia K8.
The massive interior space of the cabin is thanks to a larger vehicle overall, with extended length, optimal height and width, and a longer wheelbase. Even at the size, the K8 is still the lightest sedan on the market. So, what kind of powertrain will be under the hood of the vehicle? At launch, four powertrains will be available.
Two of the powertrain options are the same state-of-the-art 3.5-liter Smartstream powertrain, except offered with a GDI (gasoline direct injection) fuel delivery method for 295 horsepower and 264 lb-ft of torque, or a LPI (liquid propane injection) that can generate 236 horsepower and 231 lb-ft of torque. If looking to test the “Sporty” name that this sedan is aiming for, then consumers will want the 3.5 GDI Smartstream powertrain. A performance-orientated front-wheel-based AWD K8 model will also be available at launch. (more…)
Remember the Kia K8? It’s that new luxury sports sedan coming from Kia Motors that we took a tour of for the interior. High-end quality of this magnitude may be common for luxury brand automakers, but Kia Motors is not a luxury brand. It is the highest ranked mass-market automaker, according to the 2020 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, but luxury isn’t synonymous when thinking of Kia Motors vehicles. Still, a luxury sedan with such an upscale interior can only be matched with an exterior, also revealed to push the model out with the fast-growing Kia lineup.
“Following our recent company rebrand, we keep moving toward our new brand values with a new model – the K8. This modern sedan has been designed with innovation and elegance at its very core…While paying homage to the K7, the K8 looks to the future. Its progressive exterior takes on character and emotion and combines those qualities with an expressive looking front and a dynamic swooping rear, giving the K8 a high-quality, premium presence that takes direct inspiration from some of the world’s most technically advanced yachts.” – Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center
The new signature frameless ‘tiger nose’ grille replaces the old front fascia, integrated into the front bumper for a clean expansive look. An intricate diamond lattice along the grille gives the illusion of moving lights, and the front lamp turn signals resemble a nebula or star cloud. This calls back to the innovative ‘Star Cloud’ lighting inside the cabin that projects glittering and interactive ambient lighting on the door trim and dashboard of the Kia K8. Sitting atop the new grille is also the new Kia Motors logo – sharp, refined, and just cool to look at.
If there is one thing Kia Motors hasn’t been well-known for is luxury cars. Sure, the interiors are roomy and often come packed with technology, and their cars drive as nice as they look. But when it comes to car segments, Kia Motors is not classified as a luxury automaker. Even J.D. Power, that ranked Kia Motor as the highest brand during the 2020 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study did so as the highest non-luxury brand. Considered a mass-market automaker, it’s still a title Kia Motors has held for five years in-a-row now, but luxury? That’s definitely new, and Kia Motors is shooting for the title with its new K8 luxury sports car.
We saw inklings of what luxury means to Kia Motors when the automaker first released the new K5, previously named the Kia Optima, back with a more sporty appeal and high-end materials. Now that the automaker has shown us what it can do, it would seem Kia decided to go all in with a luxury vehicle when it came to designing and producing the Kia K8. A premium sports sedan, the interior is a first-class interior lounge that blends premium luxury style and comfort.
