Lately, it seems all automotive news is circling around the 2020 Kia Telluride, and who could blame it? The 2020 Kia Telluride is not only the largest SUV in the Kia Motors lineup, but it’s also won many awards since its release. By the end of 2019, the Kia Telluride won the “Triple Crown” of Automotive Awards, named the 2020 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year from North American Car of the Year (NACTOY); MotorTrend SUV of the Year; and on a Car and Driver 10 Best list. Recently, it won, the MAMA “Family Vehicle of the Year” award. With all this news, some may have forgotten the hybrid crossover that surprised millions when it came out – yeah, it started the Kia Niro lineup (gas, hybrid, and electric). MotorWeek hasn’t forgotten though, because the Kia Niro and the Kia Telluride won during the 2019 MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Awards.

The 2020 Chicago Auto Show came and went over a single weekend, with reporters and the press getting behind closed doors earlier on in the week. Although a single weekend isn’t a lot of time, it was a great chance for many automakers to show off their latest concepts and updated vehicles. Kia Motors was there to show off the new 2020 Kia Cadenza, and boy does it look amazing. During the 2020 Chicago Auto Show MotorWeek was also there to run its awards show, and the Kia Niro won in the “Best Eco-Friendly” category and Kia Telluride won out in the “Best Large Utility” category. Large Utility vehicle? Well, it is getting an off-road trim soon – an off-road Kia Telluride SUV, how nuts is that? Watch out, Jeep®.

Kia Motors Produces 3 Million Units in the U.S.

Wow, it feels like it was just yesterday that Kia Motors and the Hyundai Motor Group as a whole hit a large milestone of selling one million hybrid electric vehicles worldwide. That’s quite the accomplishment, having sold exactly 1,007,838 units after a large success in sales during the first half of 2019 with 117,109 units sold. A lot of their success came from overseas in their homeland of South Korea, but here in America, there are plenty of fans of Kia Motors. Out of the one million hybrids sold, the Kia Niro, the first-ever hybrid crossover in the world, has sold 318,917 units since its launch in 2017. 2019 must be a year of milestones for Kia Motors, because here in the states, Kia Motors has produced its three millionth vehicle.

It all goes back to 2009. In an effort to increase production and sales, Kia Motors invested more than $1.1 billion the Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, Inc. (KMMG) manufacturing plant. The plant began mass production on Nov. 16, 2009, and today, KMMG produces more than 40-percent of all Kia Motors vehicles sold in the United States. That’s some foothold.

“Producing three million vehicles in less than 10 years is another example of the commitment and results of the KMMG Team’s ‘One System, One Team’ philosophy…The world-class quality that goes into every Telluride, Sorento and Optima we build is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our team members, and today we salute their commitment to excellence.” – KMMG President and CEO Jangsoo (Jason) Shin

KMMG will celebrate its tenth anniversary of production in late 2019, celebrating a decade of serving Kia Motors. Even better, KKMG is a large part of Kia Motors’ history. The Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, Inc. (KMMG) is the first manufacturing site in North America for Kia Motors Corporation. Based in South Korea, going global is always hard for an automaker, but with an annual capacity of 340,000 units, KMMG has helped make it happen. KMMG is known as the home to the Sorento SUV, the Optima mid-size sedan, and the Telluride SUV.

Known as the automakers’ largest SUV, the 2020 Kia Telluride spearheaded Kia Motors sales during its release in March 2019. It only makes sense then that the three millionth vehicle KMMG finishes production on is none other than a white 2020 Telluride SX Prestige. It rolled off the assembly line in West Point, Georgia early-mid September 2019.

In case the name didn’t give it away, no “SX Prestige” isn’t a special trim of the lineup. The 2020 Kia Telluride SX is the high-end trim of the SUV lineup, but Prestige is an add-on package consumers can choose. Someone must have ordered a Telluride with the Prestige package for the three millionth unit, and we can’t blame them. The SX Prestige Package includes a number of lovely add-ons. These include: Active On-Demand AWD with AWD lock and snow mode, Nappa leather seating, a head-up display, heated and cooled second-row seating, a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a 110-volt home power outlet inverter, and a premium headliner and pillars with cloth.

Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Features like Nappa leather, a heated steering wheel, and heated and cooled second-row seats definitely help the 2020 Kia Telluride stand out as one of the most comfortable SUVs out on the market. Want to find your own? Come to Miami Lakes Kia and take the 2020 Kia Telluride for a test-drive today.

With Kia Motors promising a lot of changes in the few years with their “Imagine by Kia” presentation at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, they’re also putting some upgraded models on display. Set to come out in 2020 for the United States, some tweaked hybrid models will be getting a facelift for some new style. Most notably, with their current success, the Kia Niro hybrid crossover and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid crossover will be getting some new fresh style inside and out, along with new tech and safety features to increase the already great quality of each. What better way than to debut both at the Geneva Motor Show?

Based on the visuals, it seems like the Kia Niro and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid are adopting some aesthetics from their upcoming electric counterpart, the Kia Niro EV (e-Niro in UK markets). That tends to happen, improving on already great designs after the second or third attempt. The cabins have also been improved with new interior materials and infotainment technology. It even includes some telecommunications upgrades.

Miami Lakes Automall 2018 Kia Niro e-Niro

During fall of 2018, we received more news about the three Kia Niro crossovers. There’s the original Kia Niro hybrid crossover, released in 2017, followed by the Kia Niro plug-in hybrid crossover by the end of 2018. Coming soon is an all-electric version of the Kia Niro, the Kia Niro EV. We got some great news about the interior of the Kia Niro EV and its all-electric range. Now with news about its recent recordings for the Europe model, we wonder if Kia Motors is still running tests and optimizing this electric crossover, or have the numbers for the U.S. been solidified?

Last time we discussed the Kia Niro EV, the powertrain had changed a bit from its original debut. For the Niro EV, Kia developed a next-generation electric vehicle powertrain with two options for consumers to choose from. The standard setup was a 39.2 kWh battery system that can travel 150 miles emissions free, but consumers can opt-in for the high-capacity 64 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack for 280 miles! That’s pretty great for an electric vehicle.

It’s crazy how the automarket is suddenly shifting into alternative fuel vehicles. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles have finally turned over to making hybrids and electric vehicles, whereas Chevrolet and Kia Motors are only improving upon their current vehicles. Just like when Chrysler made the first plug-in hybrid minivan with the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Kia Motors made the first hybrid crossover, the Kia Niro. Soon after, in late 2017, Kia released a plug-in hybrid variant of the Niro, and soon, we’ll be getting an electric vehicle (EV) variant of the crossover, as updates about the Kia Niro EV continue to pour in.

Kia Niro

The first of its kind, the Kia Niro crossover is a hybrid vehicle. Powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder and Full Parallel Hybrid System, the powertrain is made up of a 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine optimized with Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) for improved performance and fuel efficiency. Coupled with the engine is an AC Synchronous Permanent Magnet Motor, powered by a 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. Combined, the powertrain can generate 139 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque. All trims are paired to a dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic.

Two More Kia Models Named for Their Safety

Miami Lakes Automall Kia Niro IIHS US News Kia Sorento

When we said Kia Motors is Quickly Becoming the Safest Car Brand in America, we weren’t kidding. Back then, Kia Motors had just been ranked as one of 2018’s “Most Trusted Automotive Brands” by AMCI Global, a reliable name in the industry, and their Cadenza mid-size car was named by U.S. News & World Report on their list for “The Safest Cars of 2018”. With studies continuing to conclude into the summer as we hit the middle of the year, more vehicles are being analyzed for technology, affordability, style, and safety. Most recently, two names we’ve been hearing a lot, the U.S. News & World Report and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have both named two more Kia vehicles for their safety features and security.

2018 Kia Niro Hybrid and the IIHS

Well, this is a surprise, though we’re not actually surprised. With all the acknowledgements Kia Motors has been winning, and with their award-winning lineup of vehicles of all sizes and fuel types, the Kia Niro hybrid crossover is not only the first hybrid crossover in the world but also one of the vehicles that is putting Kia Motors in top honors with big names like J.D. Power and Associates. We also know that the Kia Niro was recently named as a “Great First Time Alternative Fuel Vehicle” by U.S. News & World Report.

Now, the Kia Niro has just earned its first-ever Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. Only in its second model year, this is quite the achievement, much of which can be attested to its high-strength structure and optional add-ons for visibility and safety. Remember, for a vehicle to earn a Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must receive good ratings in all six crashworthiness tests conducted by the IIHS – driver- and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints, and seats. They must also receive an advanced or superior rating in the crash avoidance and mitigation category, and good rated headlights.

News About the Kia Niro Electric Vehicle

First, the 2018 Kia Niro came out early-mid 2017. It was a bit of a showstopper, being the world’s first hybrid crossover. As Kia Motors usually does, if one of their vehicles does well, they tend to expand upon it with different powertrain options. With the Kia Niro already being a hybrid, the next logical step was to make a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and voila! End of 2017, we got the Kia Niro PHEV. Now, an interesting turn of events, Kia Motors is finally adding another electric vehicle to their lineup. That’s right – the Kia Niro is getting its very own electric vehicle (EV) variant.

Details are still a bit dry, but here’s what we know so far. Kia Motors unveiled their all-electric version of Niro at the 5th International Electric Vehicle Expo in Jeju, Korea. The vehicle should appear again at the 2018 Paris Motor Show in September, so it’s safe to say the production of the vehicle is still a little ways away, but one can never be sure with how quickly Kia has been evolving as of late. The previous showing in Korea isn’t all that new though.

The Kia Niro EV was originally unveiled as a concept at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Oddly enough, although an all-electric vehicle, the concept featured a unique front bumper, an exclusive radiator grille, futuristic sporty air intake, and arrowhead-shaped LED daytime running lights. Housed within the flush-mounted grille and subtle geometric pattern is the vehicle’s electric charging port.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, also known as plug-in hybrids and PHEVs, are making a lot of headway in the auto industry. Two automakers found here at Miami Lakes Automall, Kia Motors and Mitsubishi Motors, are really getting into the plug-in hybrid segment. With both automakers making alternative fuel vehicles, especially Kia, and new models planned for the future (hybrid SUVs by Mitsubishi Motors and the Kia Telluride), we thought we’d take a look at all the two offer. Prior to 2018, Kia Motors only had one plug-in hybrid – the Optima PHEV. Now that the Kia Niro PHEV is a out, a plug-in hybrid crossover, let’s compare both plug-ins with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

We already covered the Kia Niro PHEV and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, so feel free to review it for a bite-size version of all we will be covering here.

Powertrains

All three vehicles being covered today have a plug-in hybrid system running the unit. Kia Motors has a name for its hybrid system, called a “Full Parallel Hybrid System” with the gasoline engine size as its prefix. For example, all 2018 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrids are run by a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and Full Parallel Hybrid System. One part of the powertrain is a 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine, optimized via dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) and gasoline direct injection (GDI). The 1.6L engine generates 104 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque. The other part of the powertrain is an AC synchronous permanent magnet motor that generates 60 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque, powered by an 8.9 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. When both parts of the powertrain work together, they can generate up to 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.

Kia Motors Implementing All-Wheel Drive

Wednesday, April 11th, 2018
Miami Lakes Automall Kia Motors All-wheel Drive

Miami Lakes Automall Kia Motors All-wheel Drive

What is all-wheel drive? Is it really all that important? All-wheel drive (AWD) is becoming a hot choice in the auto industry as of late. It was a big deal when Dodge added an all-wheel drivetrain to the Dodge Challenger GT AWD. Muscle cars usually only have rear-wheel drive for the power to push the vehicle forward, but AWD has earned popularity in recent years. Now, even more automakers are pushing for all-wheel drive as an option, and in some cases, as a standard. One automaker is none other than Kia Motors, now studying all-wheel drive intently and its uses for three of its popular vehicles – the Kia Optima midsize sedan, Niro hybrid crossover, and Sedona minivan.

What Is All-Wheel-Drive?

Known as a drivetrain, AWD is a drivetrain system that transfers power to all four wheels at once, which means all four wheels have torque, so they all have enough traction and power to push the vehicle forward. Some automakers will split the power between each axle, with 80-percent in the front and the remaining 20-percent in the rear. Some systems, like a 4×4 system by Jeep, run by a part-time 4×4 drivetrain, although listed as a 4×4 drivetrain, the vehicle will actually only power two wheels-at-a-time, and send power to the other two wheels if traction is missing in the two wheels prior.

That’s the real reason consumers want 4×4 and AWD – traction. When going off-road, consumers want to know their vehicle can handle the uneven and unusual terrain. An all-wheel drive system is great for this, because at all times, even if one tire loses its grip, there are three other tires to keep the vehicle stable until all four wheels are met with traction again. AWD can also come in handy in the north because roads can get slippery from ice and snow.

So why is Kia Motors interested in putting AWD into some of their vehicles?

Future Vehicles Coming from Kia Motors

Miami Lakes Automall Kia Motors Upcoming

Miami Lakes Automall Kia Motors Upcoming

Kia Motors is really turning the tables on the auto industry these days. It’s almost not fair, but hey, the auto industry is practically a war. Nothing is fair. We don’t mind though, because the more concepts and vehicles that come from the Kia Motors lineup, the more we have to love. After all, Kia vehicles are award winning models. Kia Motors earned strong marks from the J.D. Power Dependability Study, two models were named “Best Vehicle for the Money”, and the award-winning 2018 Kia Stinger is, well, award-winning.

Hybrids and Electric

Kia Motors is well known for making alternative fuel vehicles. They came out with the groovy Kia Soul hatchback in 2009 and quickly turned it into an all-electric vehicle. A similar pattern formed with the Kia Optima. First it came with the standard internal combustion engine, then a hybrid version came out, and then again with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variation. The release of alternative fuel vehicles by Kia Motors is just becoming the norm.

Recently, more so mid-to-late 2017, Kia released the Kia Niro, a hybrid crossover and the first of its kind. It wasn’t long after its release that Kia started talking about making a plug-in hybrid variant of the crossover, having gained popularity sooner than expected. Before the end of 2017, that’s exactly what they did – the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid was officially added to the lineup.
