Kia Corp Reveals Specs of Kia EV6

Attraction starts with the eyes, and the new Kia EV6 starts off with a new design from the minds in Seoul, Frankfurt and Irvine, California. Called an “Opposites United” philosophy, the EV6 crossover brings the best of both worlds together once and for all. Over the years, Kia has been experimenting with its signature tiger nose design with a Tiger Face for the front fascia, and the EV6 is a step up with a “Digital Tiger” grille, with no need for a functioning grill to cool down the engine. It still is a front fascia, of course, and headlamps come with a sequential dynamic light pattern to bring it all together. In the rear is a cross-car rear light cluster, and for choices, consumers can get wheel sizes available in 19, 20 or 21-inches.

Behind the new Digital Tiger face is the core of it all – n energy-dense Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (80/10/10) battery pack, low-mounted for a low center of gravity and able to power the vehicle with either rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Available in two sizes – 58.0 kWh and 77.4 kWh – with a total of 576 horsepower with the 77.4 kWh battery with a 160kW front motor and a 270kW rear motor, only available with AWD. With its innovative Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, the EV6 doubles as a portable energy source, providing 1900 watts of power to electrical appliances, devices, tools and recreational equipment thanks to an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU).

Built on an all-new platform, we covered this bad boy a few months ago, and we knew the E-GMP was going to be a game changer even then. Made of 5 percent high-strength steel (HSS) and ultra-high strength steel (UHSS), the EV6 comes with the world’s first mass-produced integrated drive axle (IDA) for improved comfort and control. With an 11kW on-board charger (OBC) for Level 2 recharging from 10-to-100 percent in 7 hours, 10 minutes, the EV6 also comes with the world’s first patented multi-charging system that supports 400v and 800v DC charging and allows for ultra-fast charging. We’re talking 70 miles added in less than 5 minutes and 210-miles (10-to-80 percent) added in under 18 minutes. You can stretch your legs a bit and juice up in no time.

Thanks to a longer wheelbase, the interior cabin is spacious with a flat floor. As eco-friendly on the inside as the powertrain, this electric crossover was made of recycled plastic, uses 100% vegan leather for the upholstery on several trims, and offers 100% LED lighting inside and out. The seats come with a slim design for more leg room in the rear, and cargo space starts at 27.7 cubic-feet behind the 60/40 split-folding second row, and 53.5 cubic-feet with the second row folded down. There is additional storage space for small items in the vehicle’s front trunk, no longer an engine bay taking up space, and a little added convenience for storing items – a Hands-free Smart Power Tailgate.

Kia Reveals the New EV6

A few weeks ago, Kia Motors gave the world a preview of its first all-electric vehicle. That is to say, Kia Motors has had electric vehicles before, with the Kia Soul EV and Kia Niro EV, but this would be the first time the automaker produced an all-electric vehicle before a gasoline internal combustion engine or plug-in hybrid vehicle. Going straight for zero carbon emissions and all battery power, the new Kia EV6 is an icon of what comes next for Kia Motors.

All-Electric Power

Making up the powertrain for this EV is a pair of 430kW motors. Showing off the power of an electric motor, the EV6 comes with an all-wheel drive GT trim, able to generate 545 lb-ft of torque and accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 161 mph. Equipped with an electronic-Limited Slip Differential software, the EV6 GT will give drivers a greater sense of control and dynamic ride and handling in all conditions. And people thought a high-performance electric vehicle was nonsense.


Kia Motors Gives Early Preview of EV6

Kia Motors is just really busy these days. Winning awards, releasing the new Kia K5 and Kia Sorento, and even announced a new luxury sedan, the Kia K8. Now, for something we’ve all been waiting for. In 2019, Kia Motors announced a new focus on creating all-electric vehicles and becoming an all-electric automaker like Tesla. In the same year, the first Kia electric vehicle concept was the Futuron, followed by another concept in 2020 for Kia electric vehicles. Finally, in 2021, it all adds up to the new Kia EV6.

The EV6 is Kia Motor’s first dedicated battery-electric vehicle (BEV). Boasting a new design philosophy and the automaker’s shift towards electrification with its Plan S strategy, the EV6 is already showing off new technology with the powertrain developed by Kia Motors and the Hyundai Motor Group. Known as the brand’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), this was unveiled towards the end of 2020, so we knew something had to be in the works to make use of this, and thus the EV6 is born!

An In-Depth Look at the New E-GMP Platform

We’re finally in the final days of 2020, and everyone is hoping for a HappIER New Year for 2021. This just wasn’t the year we were expecting. There are some interesting things happening in the automotive world amidst all the madness. In early December, Hyundai Motor Group (HMG), also known as The Group, also known as the automotive group that Kia Motors belongs to, HMG unveiled its new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), a dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform for future vehicles. Building a fully-dedicated system for upcoming and new electric vehicles is not only a step in the right direction for streamlining electric vehicle (EV) production, but also opens up a whole new lineup of EVs. After all, why invest in a BEV platform if there are no plans to use it?

Standardization is a Key Strategy

As we mentioned, having a dedicated BEV platform allows for quicker production of BEVs and EVs going forward. With the E-GMP, The Group suspects that the platform will be flexible enough for sedans, SUVs and even crossovers, with a high-performance model able to accelerate from 0-60 mph under 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 160 mph. Now that is some powerful stuff for an electric vehicle.
