Before the Coronavirus spread across the world and automotive shows were still being looked forward to, the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, taking place in January every year, got lucky. Although it’s called a “Consumer Electronics” show, don’t let the title fool anyone. Automakers will still take this time as a chance to show off new concepts, usually automotive technologies, and build attention for upcoming features for future models. During the 2020 CES, Kia Motors, in conjunction with the Hyundai Motor Group, and in partnership with Uber, there was a pretty interesting concept “floating” around. It’s the futuristic Uber Air Taxi, and it caught the attention of Etisalat, a leading telecommunications company in Africa and the Middle East, just in time for the 2020 GITEX Technology Week.
Although most shows and public exhibits have been shut down for the year, GITEX Technology Week is taking place between December 6–10, 2020 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Currently called the Hyundai Motor Group’s Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vision concept, or S-A1, was named on the Etisalat “Best Innovations in 2020” list. This honor led to it being invited to showcase such game-changing technology in an ecosystem where offering everyone some form of private or public transportation is quickly growing. Whether we’re ready to let a complete stranger fly us around from point A to point B, well, isn’t that the same thing as every other airline pilot out there? The difference here is, will companies have certified pilots operating these fleets or will this be a service open to freelance pilots who don’t necessarily take random drug screenings?
We’re getting ahead of ourselves here. The Hyundai Motor Group, made up mostly of Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors, is usually referred to as “The Group”, and has been working on many different kinds of technologies and transportation for a while now, and with the world population steadily growing, how are we going to avoid getting stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic in the following years? Are the airways really the next step? The Group seems to think so.

The S-A1 is just one of three major mobility solutions The Group is heading into. Along with the SA-1 aircraft, The Group is also taking a large look at Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBVs), or vehicles designed for specific functions that can be performed autonomously, like shopping, or delivering food, or inter-connected hubs where someone can go from the bar to the gym without leaving their home. Sort of like an above ground subway system where each car is dedicated to another function, but these cars are PBVs able to house groups of people. Actually, this is the third solution The Group is working on, known as “The Hub”, meant to serve as the next public venue for mobility transfer and community activities. This last one is another invention spawned from the Coronavirus, but doesn’t necessarily need to be just used for keeping enclosed spaces and parties safe.

Kia Motors is one automaker hitting back hard after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down auto manufacturing plants worldwide. Unveiling the new 2021 Kia K5, investing in the production of micro electric vehicles (EVs) and purpose-built vehicles (PBVs), and developing new tech for connected cars with the UVO infotainment system, the automaker has been busy. Most recently, in the Indian Market, Kia Motors is testing a new feature that seems oddly familiar to some of the technology unveiled during the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show.
Although a convention for consumer products and electronics, automakers some times show up at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and it was during this time that Kia debuted its new Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving (R.E.A.D.) system that can monitor driver mood and behavior, and a “Virtual Touch” system, the world’s first virtual touch-type gesture control technology that used finger gestures to operate parts of the vehicle. This technology hasn’t had much spotlight since, but the Kia Seltos became the first vehicle in the Kia Motors lineup to come with an Intelligent Personal Agent built into the vehicle.
Kia Motors, part of the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) will be seeing a lot of interesting changes in the coming years. Even with European Kia Chief Operating Officer Emilio Herrera optimistic about future sales, and the future of the company, we may see a pause in some of the larger endeavors, like the MoceanLab opened up in Los Angeles, California, U.S., and the Air Taxi concept debuted at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, a shared endeavor between Kia Motors, Hyundai Motors, and Uber. Still, before all of this came to pass, Kia Motors launched a Plan S Strategy, and by golly, it’s on like Donkey Kong!
Fueled by South Korea-based Hyundai Motor Co., amongst plans for future vehicle design and production, a market ripe with possibility is quickly gaining attention. It’s the world of purpose-built vehicle (PBV) services, and HMG wants to get on the ground floor with a combined investment total of $81.5 billion – $49.8 trillion by Hyundai Motor and $23.6 trillion by Kia Motors – over the next six years. Kia Motors has already announced two new upcoming electric vehicles, following the path set out by their Plan S Strategy, but this train is running on two tracks. The PBV market was also announced as a part of Plan S, with designs ranging from self-driving pizza delivery vans to mobility hubs in various cities.
Kia Motors “Plan S” is going to be something else. Announced in January 2020, the mid- to long-term strategy has one solid goal: establish a leadership position in the future automotive industry, encompassing electrification and mobility services, connectivity, and autonomy. There are already several objectives in place, and the automaker will be quickly shifting from a business system focused on internal combustion engine vehicles toward one centered on electric vehicles and customized mobility solutions. We’ve already seen glimpses of this with the Kia Futuron concept, their first all-electric vehicle that was preceded by an internal gas combustion model, and their upcoming customization app for Kia EV models.
Here’s the outline:
- Offer 11 EVs by 2025 and obtain 6.6% global EV market share
- Launch a dedicated EV model in 2021
- Make 25% of all sales from eco-friendly vehicles by the end of 2025
- Sell 500,000 EVs worldwide and 1 million eco-friendly vehicles by 2026
- Develop mobility products and services
And much more.
Wow, the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show is underway and automakers are blowing us away with some of the amazing technology they’re presenting. Although the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is more so focused on personal electronic devices, it’s also an exhibition of technology, and what better way for automakers to share new technologies and integration by joining CES 2020? The Hyundai Motor Group and Kia Motors are definitely sharing the biggest surprise. The two have just joined Uber in their mission to design and produce air taxis.
Tell us if you heard this joke. Uber riders may one day become airborne. If that’s true, they’ll call it a Hyun-day. Get it? Hyun-day – Hyundai? You get it.
The Hyundai Motor Group is the first automobile group to join Uber in designing and producing air taxis that the everyday consumer can hail, just like people do every day with Uber and Lyft already. Except instead of driving through busy streets and dealing with traffic, we have lift off. Unlike regular airplanes that need a runway to gain speed and take flight, these air taxis will be electric, able to rise into the air from a standstill, powered by several propellers. The two will be creating a new network of personal transportation that no longer relies on the schedule of airlines or finding a licensed pilot.
Now that the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show has ended, we’ve seen all the auto industry had to offer over nearly two weeks. Kia Motors is one automaker that stood out, not because of a model or concept they debuted, but more of a promise for the future of their lineup. It’s not surprising – many names in the auto industry are starting to bring electric motors and batteries into the mix of their vehicles. Kia Motors, however, may have the most alternative fuel vehicles in their lineup than any other automaker. Not only this, but Kia has been on a mission to change the auto industry and are intent on leading the way. Style, tech, alternative fuel are the cornerstones of the new Kia Motors, but can they deliver?
What pops to mind when talking about Kia Motors and style? Is it the Kia Stinger? Currently the icon for Kia Motors, the Kia Stinger brought a whole new attitude to Kia Motors. The automaker was intent on “designing cars that drive as good as they look,” and the Kia Stinger definitely delivered. Able to surpass costly luxury cars that claim to drive fast, the Kia Stinger’s performance may have been the jumping off point for Kia Motors going GT, while giving all of their new vehicles a little taste of the Stinger’s style.
Making cars that look great is one thing, but a vehicle that performs at its best is definitely the GT line of the Kia Stinger. With different drive modes for sharp turns or a long ride, drivers enjoy getting behind the wheel of a Kia Stinger GT. Now, Kia Motors is coming out with a GT for many of its vehicles, starting with the 2020 Kia Soul, Kia Forte GT, and Kia Rio GT. If the automaker can deliver on performance this well, can they also upgrade the tech?
Kia Motors has always been an automaker quick to embrace change it seems. Their lineup is one of the most expansive and welcoming of alternative fuel vehicles. They have the Kia Soul EV, the Kia Niro hybrid, and Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-in. The 2020 Kia Telluride went into production, and one day Kia Motors spoke of turning it into a hybrid SUV. We thought Kia was going to take a break from alternative fuel after they made a lot of commotion at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show with the 2020 Kia Soul EV, and the 2019 Kia Niro EV finding its way to city streets soon enough. Why take a break with all that success? Kia Motors teases a new electric concept for the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
That’s right, Kia Motors is also bringing a new concept to Geneva. Oddly enough, Kia Motors in Mitsubishi Motors seem to be in-sync these days. Both automakers brought new autonomous technology to the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, and now Kia will be debuting a new model at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show alongside Mitsubishi. Maybe it’s just a coincidence?
The 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is booming, and Kia Motors previewed some of their upcoming autonomous technology in the weeks prior. Now that they’re on the floor and ready to showcase, the collection is finally complete. Designed for the post-autonomous auto market; read “once the auto market has fully embraced self-driving vehicles and it becomes the norm”; these technologies could popup in semi-autonomous or Level 3 autonomous vehicles easily. Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving (R.E.A.D.)
R.E.A.D. is the main highlight of the Kia Motors showcase, and it’s easy to see why. This system is the backbone of many of their post-autonomous concepts. Designed to enhance the human mobility experience by optimizing cabin space and allowing the driver to do so on command would really be an upgrade. Part one was developed through a joint research alliance with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab’s Affective Computing group. In this phase, based on evaluations of the driver’s emotional state in real-time via artificial intelligence-based bio-signal recognition technology, an onboard artificially intelligent (A.I.) system can then customize the interior environment based on its assessment of mood and create a more enjoyable experience while in the vehicle. One would assume the A.I. also monitors normal driving behaviors and picks up on such when the driver’s face is “angry” or “sad” – but that’s just our theory.
The 2019 Consumer Electronics Show is taking place this week, from January 8 to 11, 2019. If not aware, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is an annual show at the Las Vegas Convention Center that showcases more than 4,500 exhibiting companies, including: manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, technology delivery systems, and other industries. Not specialized for the automotive, it’s not a guarantee that an automaker name will show, but Kia Motors, part of the Hyundai Motor Group, show up just about every year. Last week we talked about their Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving (R.E.A.D.), and this week we get a peek at a new Automated Valet Parking System before the doors to the 2019 CES open.
Automated Valet Parking System
Yes, it’s just as it sounds. In the coming years, we’ll see a lot of interesting technology from the South Korean automakers, Hyundai and Kia Motors. Some of which deals with their plans to have artificial intelligence (A.I.) and autonomous vehicles on the road by 2020. Given concepts like the upcoming new Kia Telluride and their R.E.A.D. system, the use of artificial intelligence in automobiles will be designed for safety and consumer well-being. Hence their showcase at the 2019 “Consumer” Electronics Show.
What else is Hyundai and Kia bringing for the consumer? How about a way to talk to one’s car with their smartphone? We discussed the wireless electric vehicle charging system Kia Motors is developing, and in conjunction with that technology, the automaker intends to install them in parking garages. Imagine a whole level with parking spaces that act as charging stations. Drivers don’t need to wait for one to open, because with A.I. and autonomous self-driving car technology, their vehicle can find a space and charge up when available, like a cleaning robot looking for its own charging port via radar.
When the electric vehicle variation of the Kia Niro debuted at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), there was a lot of interesting information to learn. Kia Motors just keeps pushing the envelope when it comes to their alternative fuel vehicle lineup, continuously expanding it whenever they have a winner on their hands. We can’t complain – honestly, it feels good to go green, and if we can drive a fancy car and help the environment, then why not? During the initial debut, the Kia Niro EV was just a concept, and much of the interior was like a cardboard cut-out. Recently, a more fine-tuned prototype of the Kia Niro EV was revealed in Busan, South Korea, and a savvy commentator, Jose Guerrero, took the chance to make a video and upload it for everyone to enjoy. Recap of the Powertrain Details
During the initial debut of the Kia Niro EV concept, the powerain details were pretty hush-hush at the 2018 CES in Las Vegas. Kia called it a “next-generation electric powertrain [with] new production technologies earmarked for near-future EVs from Kia [with a 64 kWh battery] paired to a powerful 150-kilowatt ([200-horsepower]) electric motor.” With an entirely new 64-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a rated 238 miles of range, that’s not too bad for an all-electric vehicle. That’s the same range for the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV.
So the Kia Niro EV concept is said to share the longest-range of an affordable electric car with the Chevy Bolt EV. The concept had some style changes, doing away with the tiger-nose grille, and replacing it with a pair of very thin lamps and a smooth, front bumper with a recharging outlet on the driver’s side of the front fascia. Kia said the interior would have a “”pure, minimalist, and digital [approach to provide] an innate sense of space and calm [while inside the car].”
