Kia Motors is one of the automakers that bounced back from the pandemic shutdown with a vengeance. Right from the gates, Kia Motors blew up the auto industry by spearheading the production of Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBVs), investing in a new 800-volt battery system for electric vehicles (EVs), and announcing a new plan to design and produce micro EVs. Kia Motors, part of the Hyundai Motor Group, is also working with the automotive group to develop new forms of transportation, with projects like the MoceanLab. The most recent venture for Kia Motors is a new partnership for the development of customized EV mobility services.
Called “Purple M”, a new joint venture was created in partnership between Kia Motors and CODE42.ai, a Korean technology firm pioneering the transition to autonomous Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS). Unlike the customization app Kia Motors released for EV models, the goal of customized EV mobility services are to create transportation services tailored for specific needs, such as ride-hailing, fleet management, demand-responsive shuttle, and smart logistics. With the implementation of CODE42.ai’s unrivalled IT technology to Kia Motors already strong global presence, Purple M will make use of CODE42.ai’s proprietary Urban Mobility Operating System (UMOS), a comprehensive mobility platform, to create new concepts for mobility services. The two groups share a common goal many automakers are currently chasing after – creating a mobile ecosystem where anyone and everyone can get some kind of private or public transportation.

The challenge will be how quickly the common public will adapt to autonomous vehicle and air transportation services. A self-driving electric vehicle is one thing, with many organizations gaining popularity across the world, but trusting a total stranger to fly you somewhere? Sure, thousands of people get on planes driven by someone they don’t know every day, but that guy is a for sure board-certified pilot. We have a way to go before AirUbers become a thing.
Back to the electric vehicle side of things, Purple M is all about establishing a comprehensive and flexible e-mobility service platform that can deploy EVs anywhere. To do this, the joint venture will need to expand and shake hands with specialist providers in the country, specifically Korea and its various mobility market players to develop a flexible e-mobility infrastructure that can offer a wide range of services to a broad consumer base versus a small, controlled populace. Most-likely though, any e-hailing service will start small.
Purple M also aims to develop models and vehicles that will set new standards for mobility business models in the post-coronavirus era, an objective Kia Motors was also quick to learn about. Automakers can’t just keep producing the same bread-winning models and expect business as usual. Purple M was made to challenge conventional designs and reimagine transportation for the future. We’re also going to see part of Kia Motors Plan S Strategy come to fruition. The Korean automaker wanted to establish a leadership position in the future automotive industry when it came to electrification, connectivity, and autonomy. Through Purple M, Kia Motors will be collaborating between larger, well-established firms as well as smaller, younger companies in Korea to establish a new start-up ecosystem, an empire of sorts.

The Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) is one of several automobile groups working towards an interconnected and mobile future. Back in October 2019, the HMG signed a contract with Aptiv, a global technology company dedicated to developing safer, greener, and more connected solutions for the future of mobility. Together, the two entered a joint-venture to work towards a global autonomous driving ecosystem. Now in November 2019, the HMG establishes a new mobility service venture to further that initiative. For those not in the know, Kia Motors is one of the brands under the HMG umbrella, just like Jeep and Dodge are under the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) umbrella – good news for HMG means good news for Kia.
They’re calling it “MoceanLab”. Was “Motion Lab” already taken? Perhaps the name came from the city the project is launched in. After considerate review, the HMG chose Los Angeles as the home base of MoceanLab. With the large and diverse population, challenges with traffic congestion, and the progressive commitment to transportation innovation and sustainability (the number one state self-driving vehicles go to for test rounds), L.A. was the prime choice for launching a new mobility platform.

That’s right, the HMG is working on launching their own self-driving car sharing program. We can see some influence of their joint-venture with Aptiv, the company that conducted the first coast-to-coast automated drive in the United States, has deployed commercial autonomous vehicles on a global scale, operates more than 100 autonomous vehicles on multiple continents, and is the leading ride-hailing network in Las Vegas. However, the MoceanLab project is starting small with a pilot program.
Wow, who thought the joint venture between the Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv would pay off so soon? The recent partnership between one of the industry’s most innovative vehicle technology providers and one of the world’s largest vehicle manufacturers hit the ground running to design, develop, and commercialize SAE Level 4 and 5 autonomous technologies. The South Korean based automobile group, Hyundai Motors, recently held a luncheon session in New York to expand on the $4 billion deal between the two companies. The most exciting news executive vice chairman Chung Euisun shared was that the Hyundai Motor Group will begin the mass production of self-driving cars within the next five years.
That’s still awhile away but it’s nice to know that self-driving cars are still on the horizon for the auto market. When it comes to the partnership between the Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, both companies are holding an equal share of investment, responsibility, and ownership. With the $4 billion total in mind, Aptiv will be contributing its autonomous driving technology, intellectual property, and approximately 700 employees focused on the development of scalable autonomous driving solutions to the joint-venture – this amounts to their share of USD 2 billion. In Hyundai Motors corner, Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and Hyundai Mobis will start off with a contribution of $0.4 billion in vehicle engineering services, R&D resources, and access to intellectual property, but will collectively pay USD 1.6 billion in cash at closing. Simultaneously, the Hyundai Motor Group holds the same number of shares as Aptiv in their company. Meaning, even after the joint-venture ends, Hyundai Motors and automakers affiliated with it (Kia Motors included) will have the ability to transform itself through the use of Aptiv technology from a mere car manufacturer into a future mobility solutions provider.
Sneaking past us at the end of September was a new joint venture partnership between the Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, a global technology company dedicated to developing safer, greener, and more connected solutions for the future of mobility. As we all know, anything that the Hyundai Motor Group becomes a part of directly translates to Kia Motors, an automaker under the Hyundai Motors umbrella. The agreement between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptive is a 50-50 split, valued at a total of USD 4 billion, will be working towards what they call a global autonomous driving ecosystem.

The partnership we’re watching take flight is between one of the industry’s most innovative vehicle technology providers and one of the world’s largest vehicle manufacturers. By working together, the aim of the joint venture is to design, develop, and commercialize SAE Level 4 and 5 autonomous technologies to further the partners’ leadership position in a growing market of autonomy and artificial intelligence. With each company having a 50-percent stake, Aptiv will be contributing its autonomous driving technology, intellectual property, and approximately 700 employees focused on the development of scalable autonomous driving solutions amounting to USD 2 billion. The Hyundai Motor Group is investing their portion, and Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and Hyundai Mobis will collectively contribute USD 1.6 billion at closing and the remaining USD 0.4 billion in vehicle engineering services, R&D resources, and access to intellectual property.
It seems like only days ago that the auto market placed its focus on Aurora Innovation, a self-driving startup among many currently entering the race for the first self-driving vehicle for public retail. Although there are already companies out there testing their vehicles on public streets, and even programs like Waymo One offer the everyday citizens (in Phoenix, Arizona) to be chauffeured from place-to-place by a self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan, the flagship of the Waymo self-driving fleet. As it turns out, the self-driving car startup company Aurora Innovation was just running the company’s series B financing round, and two more large names in the auto industry made an investment – the Hyundai Motor Group and Kia Motors Corp.
That’s right. According to a news release, Kia Motors is getting in on the ground floor with Aurora Innovation. With their recent partnership also fueled by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), this brings Aurora’s total for this round of funding up to $600 million. It’s going to be interesting to see how FCA intends to work with Aurora and whether or not the company will be sharing technology across the automakers or developing technology for each. In the aforementioned news release, companies discussed the integration of the Aurora Driver technology into Hyundai’s fuel cell vehicle NEXO.
Who said electric cars (EVs) can’t perform? High-performance vehicles with alternative fuel are quickly becoming the next big thing in the pre-autonomous auto market. Self-driving, autonomous vehicles are also on the horizon, but they may be a little further out. Many automakers have resigned to finally embrace the change of the alternative fuel market, and some are thinking, “Hey, let’s do what we do best.” Still, make high-performance vehicles but make them so that they’re powered by an electric motor. Sound crazy? Kia Motors doesn’t think so.

Now that the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show has ended, we’ve seen all the auto industry had to offer over nearly two weeks. Kia Motors is one automaker that stood out, not because of a model or concept they debuted, but more of a promise for the future of their lineup. It’s not surprising – many names in the auto industry are starting to bring electric motors and batteries into the mix of their vehicles. Kia Motors, however, may have the most alternative fuel vehicles in their lineup than any other automaker. Not only this, but Kia has been on a mission to change the auto industry and are intent on leading the way. Style, tech, alternative fuel are the cornerstones of the new Kia Motors, but can they deliver?
What pops to mind when talking about Kia Motors and style? Is it the Kia Stinger? Currently the icon for Kia Motors, the Kia Stinger brought a whole new attitude to Kia Motors. The automaker was intent on “designing cars that drive as good as they look,” and the Kia Stinger definitely delivered. Able to surpass costly luxury cars that claim to drive fast, the Kia Stinger’s performance may have been the jumping off point for Kia Motors going GT, while giving all of their new vehicles a little taste of the Stinger’s style.
Making cars that look great is one thing, but a vehicle that performs at its best is definitely the GT line of the Kia Stinger. With different drive modes for sharp turns or a long ride, drivers enjoy getting behind the wheel of a Kia Stinger GT. Now, Kia Motors is coming out with a GT for many of its vehicles, starting with the 2020 Kia Soul, Kia Forte GT, and Kia Rio GT. If the automaker can deliver on performance this well, can they also upgrade the tech?
Ridesharing is slowly starting to become a much-desired market for automakers to enter. If it isn’t the ability to swap vehicles for a trial-by-fire test drive through the new rideshare and swap services by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), then it’s the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance collaborating with the Didi Auto Alliance, an intelligent ride-sharing alliance that uses artificial intelligence and autonomous technology. Now, another similar company is coming to light, Vulog, and who better to partner up with the company than Kia Motors? Yes, Kia Motors is in the building, and jumping into the ridesharing market.
Vulog, how does one pronounce it? We’re not sure, but the shared mobility technology company recently claimed its new release of its AiMA (artificial intelligence mobility applied) platform will significantly increase the user appeal of shared services. How is it any different from current services? Vulog calls this new platform an upgrade from the typical ridesharing service, like an Uber or car swap.
Imagine owning a rental car service, and any day, the right vehicle for the job can be driven that day. That’s what Vulog’s AiMA provides, by enabling an operator with a single fleet of vehicles to be selected, able to offer multiple different possibilities. It works just like any other rental service too. Called a “free-floating scheme”, users of the platform can access vehicles instantly anywhere. They plug in, say, an area code to provide the platform with a geofenced area, and then pick out a convenient time to operate the vehicle and where, and then that vehicle can be reserved for a specific time at the location selected by the user. Pretty nifty.
Popping up at 2018 New York Fashion Week and with five concepts at the 2018 SEMA Auto Show, Kia has gone beyond to show that this SUV is as versatile as a crossover with plenty of personal appeal. The production-ready model isn’t the concept we were promised, but we don’t think anyone was pouring chips into seats that can “read and report the health alerts” of its occupants. Given all of the technology Kia Motors presented at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, one could say that the concept features, although not existent in the 2019 debut, may not be that far off. For now, take a look at what the 2020 Kia Telluride debut tells us about the boxy SUV at the 2019 North American International Auto Show, also known as the Detroit Auto Show.
Yes, boxy. The model body does come with its curves, but the front and rear fascia have that robust boxy shape SUVs are known for. This is especially true in the front fascia, where the iconic tiger-nose grille is very prominent in this model. A square hood, vertically stacked headlights, and inverted L-shaped taillights all bring the boxy look together. Kia is intent on calling the Telluride their “largest SUV in the lineup” and making it the new vehicle everyone is talking about.
Kia Motors is an automotive brand that will soon become a household name. Throughout 2018, Kia developed an array of interesting technology for the automotive industry, and it seems 2019 will be no different. Already set to debut at the upcoming 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, Kia Motors will be previewing another collection of technology aimed at serving the generation of drivers in autonomous vehicles. This may be a bit unorthodox, seeing as how the industry of self-driving vehicles is still in its infancy stage, and Kia could be getting ahead of things…but maybe that’s a good thing.
Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving (R.E.A.D.)
The technology popping up at the 2019 CES is for the post-autonomous driving generation. This system, R.E.A.D. is designed to enhance the human mobility experience by optimizing and personalizing the in-car cabin experience. Developed through a joint research alliance with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab’s Affective Computing group, the R.E.A.D. System is the first of its kind, capable of changing the vehicle’s cabin space based on evaluations of the driver’s emotional state in real-time via artificial intelligence-based bio-signal recognition technology. This may also share some similar features to the technology seen in early Kia Telluride concepts.
