During the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, Kia Motors made a large appearance by showing off many of their new vehicles. This included the new 2020 Kia Soul, 2020 Kia Soul EV, and the upcoming new Kia Niro EV, the electric vehicle version of the popular and successful Kia Niro, the world’s first hybrid crossover. We’ve received a lot of great news about the Kia Niro EV so far. The Kia Niro EV has great fuel efficiency, or should we say driving range, since it is an electric vehicle. Kia Motors is becoming increasingly popular for its far-driving alternative fuel vehicles, but the automaker has been heralded a lot for its safety, with many Kia Motors vehicles named by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the Kia Drive Wise Package that will help keep drivers everywhere safe. Now, the Kia Niro EV will be joining the pack with several advanced safety features standard.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Oh, the long and empty highways are made for this, and the drivers behind the wheel must love it. “Adaptive Cruise Control” is also sometimes known as “Smart Cruise Control”. The concept behind the technology and its operation are simple. In the world of self-driving and autonomous cars, semi-autonomy is right around the corner. Right now, vehicles have achieved level 3 autonomy, with adaptive cruise control being one of those systems. Here’s how it works – (1) just like the normal cruise control, the driver sets the speed, (2) the vehicle maintains that speed, and (3) unlike the norm, if the driver’s vehicle starts to approach another vehicle quickly, the vehicle will slow down to a more appropriate speed, and then (4) speed back up accordingly.
Like the 2019 Kia Niro EV at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2020 Kia Soul EV took the stage. With Kia Motors expanding its alternative fuel vehicle lineup, like the Kia Niro, Kia Niro plug-in hybrid, and the upcoming Kia Telluride hybrid SUV, the Kia Soul EV is due for a bit of a refresh. Before the 2018 LA Auto Show, several press conferences were held by automotive brands to show off what they have coming up, and the Soul EV is one of them. With a full press release sharing all the details, we can finally talk all about the new 2020 Kia Soul EV.
Battery and Performance
It would seem the 2020 Kia Soul EV is sharing some new technology with the 2019 Kia Niro EV. The new Soul EV now comes with a new state-of-the-art liquid-cooled lithium ion polymer 64 kWh battery hooked up to a new electric motor that can generate 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque. Kia also stated that the Kia Soul EV can be charged at about 100 kW for a 50-percent charge up when using Combined Charging System (CCS) DC fast-charge, standard equipment for the 2020 Kia Soul EV.
The internet has been filling with updates about the new Kia Niro and its electric vehicle (EV) counterpart since early 2018. Now that we’re heading towards the end of the year and into 2019, automakers are using the last of auto shows to make some noise for their 2019 model year vehicles and even 2020 models. Kia Motors is one automaker using the hype train to their advantage, debuting the 2020 Kia Forte GT and Kia Telluride at the 2018 SEMA Auto Show. During the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, Kia appeared again, this time with the reveal of the 2020 Kia Soul and the Kia Soul EV. Also sharing the limelight during the auto show in LA was the all-new 2019 Kia Niro EV, finally with some solid specs.
Called the “Kia Niro EV” in the states, and the “e-Niro” overseas, the Niro EV was already up and coming with its own style and tech a part form its hybrid crossover parent, the original Niro. Many automakers tend to hold a press conference the week of the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, and Kia Motors did not slouch. An entire press release covering the conference reveals a world of possibilities for electric vehicles.
Powertrain and Battery
Information on the powertrain was previously minimal, mainly known as two options – an optional 39.2 kWh battery system that can travel 150 miles or a high-capacity 64 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack for travelling 280 miles. The 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show press conference brought us a little more information. The liquid-cooled 64 kWh lithium ion polymer battery is packaged under the floor of the vehicle, and via an electric motor, the Niro EV can generate 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque.
Isn’t it a little odd we haven’t heard anything about the popular Kia Soul hatchback in awhile? Sure, the Kia Soul has the best of everything, and when it comes to the “Coolest Cars Under $20K”, the Kia Soul makes the list. Maybe it’s because Kia Motors is focused on the new Kia GT Line, starting with the Kia Rio GT, Kia Forte GT, and eventually the Kia Optima GT and Kia Soul GT. The 2019 Kia Soul is out, but Kia Motors clearly has plans to already knock it off its pedestal, because the all-new 2020 Kia Soul and Kia Soul EV are already set to debut during the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Los Angeles Auto Show
Known as “The City of Angels”, Los Angeles is a large auto show held at the Los Angeles Convention Center every year. Endorsed by the Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealers Association, the LA Auto Show usually begins in late November/early December, and lasts for a little over a week. Last year, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL popped up in LA, so we wonder what we’ll see this year, including the new Kia Soul and Kia Soul EV.
