About a month ago, J.D. Power completed compiling the results for its 2023 Initial Quality Study. Designed to take a look at the initial quality of several new car factors, and how well they hold up over the course of the first 90 days. All-in-all, J.D. Power said the majority of the industry has hit a tipping point where there is more bad things than good. Some of this can be attested to the semiconductor chip shortage, but there were some brands that stood out. Notably, the Kia Corp has several models named the highest ranking vehicle for their respective segment. With the J.D. Power 2023 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study concluded, Kia now stands as the brand with the most awards earned during the 28-year history of the study.

“As the most awarded brand by J.D. Power across both the 2023 J.D. Power APEAL and IQS Studies, Kia has demonstrated our leadership position in not only the automotive industry, but also within the electrification sector…Our world-class vehicles deliver the quality, reliability and technology that consumers are looking for and the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. APEAL Study shows our continuous drive to offer the right mix of features and attributes across multiple model lines.” – Steven Center, COO & EVP, Kia America

Like other studies conducted by J.D. Power, the APEAL study results is based on surveys sent out to owners of new model year vehicles after 90 days of ownership. Fielded from February through May 2023, based on vehicles registered from November 2022 through February 2023, the APEAL study received 84,555 survey responses to make up the data this year. The study takes a look at owners’ experiences with design, performance, safety, usability, comfort, perceived quality, and other factors across 37 attributes, ranging from a consumer’s sense of comfort when climbing into the driver’s seat to how they feel when stepping on the accelerator. Overall, the APEAL study is designed to measure an owners’ emotional attachment and level of excitement with their new vehicle. Also like other studies, vehicles receive a score on a 1,000-point scale. Kia had an APEAL score of 851 this year, placing it in the top five.

Although not the highest-ranking automaker this year, Kia has earned high rankings in past J.D. Power APEAL studies. This year, we’re talking about how the Kia Corp has earned the highest total number of awards in the history of the J.D. Power APEAL study. For the second consecutive year, three Kia models took top honors in their respective segments. These include the all-electric Kia EV6 (Most Appealing Compact SUV); Carnival (Most Appealing Minivan); and the K5 (Most Appealing Midsize Car). Taking the number one rank in their respective segments are the Telluride (Most Appealing Upper Midsize SUV); Forte (Most Appealing Compact Car); Rio (Most Appealing Small Car); and Stinger (Most Appealing Midsize Premium Car). All seven were also found to be the most appealing for driver experience and ranked number one for driver satisfaction.
