The 2022 Kia Seltos Offers More Standard Features

The Kia Seltos took us all by surprise. This subcompact SUV first toured in India, and we weren’t sure if it would stay overseas or come to the states, but in late 2019, Kia announced that U.S. arrival of the Kia Seltos. Now in its 2022 model year, with a starting MSRP of $22,490 (plus destination fee), this would be a good time to know that the Kia Seltos is possibly one of a kind, where the base trim shines just as brightly as the rest of the lineup.

Made up of five trims, the LX, S, EX, Nightfall Edition, and SX, the first three trims are all powered by the same 2.0-liter DOHC I-4 engine, able to generate 146 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. The base trim would be the Kia Seltos LX. This is the trim we want to focus on, so for the engine type, this is all you need to know.

Here is where things start to get interesting. Standard on the Kia Seltos is a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The LX is also one of the select trims to come with all-wheel drive (AWD) standard. Even with this drivetrain, the fuel economy is still strong, with an EPA-rated 27 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway.

The Kia EV6 is a Luxury EV

The next few years in the auto market are going to see a big change. Electric vehicles (EVs), battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), and even hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles (FCEVs), are going to slowly become a more dominant share of inventory. Where there was doubt, there is now surprise and delight. Automakers all over are starting to work on an all-new EV lineup, whereas Kia Corp already has a healthy head start. With the release of the all-electric Kia EV6, the South Korean automaker eventually brought the EV to the states through Kia America, and we even got to test drive the EV6 at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show. We can tell you one thing for sure – this EV is like a silent killer with all the power of a high performance car but none of the bang. Moreover, many automotive journalists are calling the EV6 a step for Kia Corp into luxury vehicles.

Kia Corp would claim its first launch into the luxury vehicle segment would be with the 2022 Kia Carnival. Called a “multi-purpose vehicle” (MPV), the Carnival looked like a cross between an SUV and a minivan on the outside, and the inside provided a VIP lounge area for passengers with a full recline, raised power footrests, comfortable headrests, and heated and ventilated leather seats. Two dual 12.3-inch displays stretch across the dashboard, one for the instrument cluster, the other for the new Kia Connect infotainment system. A 12-speaker Bose stereo was available for optimum beats. It sure feels like a luxury entry, so what could journalists be talking about when it comes to the EV6? There are some similarities.

Kia Corp and HMG Increase Investment in EV Production

The rise of electric vehicles (EVs), battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) is on a non-stop train to becoming the next largest category in the automotive market. With electrified vehicles becoming more prevalent, and winning awards left-and-right, automakers who are already ahead of the game can report record sales numbers and invest more into their EV production. One such automaker is Kia Corp. Reporting a rapid growth in electrified vehicles in May 2022, the parent group, Hyundai Motor Group (HMG), is increasing its investment to more than USD 10 billion by 2025 to further the automakers’ EV goals.

“We have come a long way and become very successful in a short period of time, but we are also preparing for our future…The Group will strengthen our partnership with U.S. public and private entities to offer innovative products and mobility solutions to our valued customers in the U.S. while supporting global carbon neutrality efforts,” – Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group, following his meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden in Seoul on May 22, 2022

It’s been a good month for Kia Corp. Many Kia vehicles have won awards in May, including the Kia Rio S winning the Vincentric 2022 Best Fleet Value in America Award. Hitting a true hallmark, the automaker is celebrating the sale of the 10 millionth Kia vehicle in the U.S. Since start of sales in 1993, a true win for Kia America, the U.S. division of the South Korean automaker. Continuing “Accelerate The Good” charitable initiatives, Kia will, in association with Ms. Charoenphong, Kia is commemorating this milestone through multiple charitable acts, such as $10,000 donations to non-profit organizations including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, Alzheimer’s Association, and Freedom Service Dogs of America.

Kia EV6 Earns 5-Star Safety Rating by Euro NCAP

The new electric vehicle (EV) by Kia Corp, the Kia EV6, finally made it to America this year, 2022, but has been winning awards since its release. Twice in March, the EV6 won an award – the 2022 Red Dot Design Awards and the 2022 European Car of the Year. The EV6 also comes with a new incentive in the American market. Kia America and Electrify America entered a partnership to offer new Kia EV6 owners 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh), free of charge, at any Electrify America station across the U.S. If drivers needed any more reason to drive this EV, the Kia EV6 just earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

We’re still waiting on safety ratings from organizations in the states, such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but with the EV6 available longer overseas, the European safety organization NCAP, Europe’s leading independent safety testing organization, has its safety results complete first. Either way, a five-star rating is always great to see, especially with EVs and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), slowly becoming a larger part of the auto industry and auto market. Following extensive testing by Euro NCAP, the five-star rating is reflective of four categories the EV6 scored high in.

Kia Launches New E-FOREST Factory for PBV Production

During the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Kia Corp and the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) surprised the world with a new form of automobile. Becoming a large part of the companies’ plans going forward, purpose-built vehicles (PBVs) are going to be the new, big change in the auto industry. Like standard vehicles, a PBV can get people from one place to another, but the interior of the vehicle is designed with an exact purpose in mind. To illustrate this, the automakers presented a video at the 2022 CES demonstrating the variety of PBVs that may one day populate roadways or even cities. In May 2022, Kia Corp announced that it will be establishing an all-new, high-tech smart manufacturing facility dedicated to producing electric PBVs, called “E-FOREST”.

“This dedicated PBV facility is one of the major pillars of our Plan S strategy as Kia seeks to claim the top position in the global PBV market…We will initially explore new markets with derivative PBV models, then gradually expand our presence in global markets with dedicated PBV models featuring autonomous driving technologies.” – Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia Corporation

Able to build 100,000 PBVs a year, with the possibility of increasing production to 150,000 units annually, Kia Corp has big plans for this new production hub, located within Kia’s existing Hwaseong manufacturing site in Korea. Construction of the plant is slated to start during the first half of 2023, with production for commercial PBVs by 2025. In March, during the Kia 2030 2022 CEO Investor Day, the automaker shared business plans expanding on their Plan S Strategy, a framework to become a leading automaker in the world of electric vehicles (EVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). These plans are already underway, with Kia intending to expand the lineup with 14 BEV models by 2027, launching at least two BEVs per year between 2023 and 2027.

Kia Rio S Wins Vincentric 2022 Best Fleet Value in America Award

The Kia Corp lineup is very large, and still growing with the addition of electric vehicles (EVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Because of the large selection, it can be easy for consumers to forget the very affordable and classy subcompact car, the Kia Rio. Now in its 2022 model year, the Kia Rio continues to shine and receive awards. We touched on this shortly last week with all the current awards Kia Corp is winning for its lineup in 2022, the Kia Rio had its own win with the 2022 Vincentric Best Fleet Value in America™ Awards. We think the Rio deserves some more spotlight, and we’re glad to see it happening. Starting at $16,250 (plus destination fee), the Kia Rio keeps its value for years to come.

“The Kia Rio outperformed eight competitor trims to earn this first-time win for Best Fleet Value Subcompact Hatchback…The Rio demonstrated its strong fleet value by having both the lowest maintenance costs and the lowest repair costs in its class.” – David Wurster, Vincentric President

If the name “Vincentric” is unknown, here’s a little summary. An organization trusted by automakers for its analysis and careful collection of data, knowledge, and insight into the auto market and new vehicles every year, Vincentric is a great source for consumers in the market to purchase a new vehicle. Able to provide consumers with all the data needed to make an informed decision, one thing that the  Vincentric Best Fleet Value in America™ Awards focuses on is the is the resale value of a vehicle years after purchase. Will the vehicle be worth anything? And how close to the original starting price will be retained by the vehicle?

Consecutive Winnings for Kia Vehicles in May 2022

Every year, automotive journalists and publications review vehicles, have competitions, conduct studies, put together “Best of” lists, every way one can think of to test the quality of an automobile. A lot of awards shows and competitions take place in the spring, and this year, it’s like a wildfire. Every week, there seems to be another win for an automaker or model. This time, it’s Kia Corp, with three winnings reported in three days. The awards come from U.S. News & World Report for the Kia EV6, Vincentric for the Kia Rio, and the Hispanic Motor Press for the Kia Carnival MPV. We can already see the gold medals.

U.S. News & World Report recently put together its list of “Best Hybrid and Electric Cars”. Each electric vehicle (EV) that made the list was analyzed based on its overall score (according to U.S. News reviews), starting price, Level 2 charging rate, EPA fuel economy, and range estimates. The winners had the best combination of quality, value, and efficiency in their segment. With orders rising 49-percent in its second month in showrooms, a new Kia EV was definitely on the list, winning out over dozens of competitors. This earned the EV the title of Best Electric Vehicle, the Kia EV6.

Kia Corp Wins Multiple Awards During 2022 NYIAS

We covered a bit of the 2022 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) that started last week and will continue on through this upcoming weekend (April 15 – 24, 2022). Well, we focused more on the highlights of the new 2023 Kia Niro crossover and new 2023 Kia Telluride SUV. Previewed during the 2022 NYIAS, Kia Corp was sure to put these vehicles front and center. Also taking place during 2022 NYIAS was an auto awards show no doubt, and Kia is flying high after winning multiple marketing honors for its recent “Movement That Inspires” broadcast campaigns.

The recent marketing campaign by Kia have featured Kia’s first entry into the luxury car segment, the Carnival MPV; the automaker’s first all-electric vehicle, the EV6; the latest sports car from the automaker, the K5; and of course the Telluride, the automaker’s largest SUV to date and the latest model to become an electric vehicle (EV) if the design of the Kia EV9 is anything to go by. Seen at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show, it was basically a large, bright blue SUV, but electric. Let’s just call it an electric Telluride for now, and seeing as how the Telluride is one of Kia Corp’s most-awarded SUVs, winning the Triple Crown of Automotive Awards during its first year of release, the Telluride goes on to earn another first, the EDO’s first-ever Automotive TV Advertising Award for “Best Non-Luxury Auto Campaign”.

The Kia Telluride was an instant winner when Kia Corp released it back in March 2019, completely spearheading sales for Kia at the time. Highlights of the New 2023 Kia Niro

The Kia Niro crossover is the first of its kind. A hybrid from the start, it was the world’s first hybrid crossover and made plenty of noise. It’s compact, it’s cute (the ladies love it), and can save some serious moola. Although only a crossover, the Kia Niro qualifies for $7,500 federal tax credit. Taxes are getting worse, so who can’t afford to save $7500 next year? Plus, the Niro comes in three flavors – hybrid, the Kia Niro Plugin Hybrid, and the Kia Niro EV. There’s something for everyone, but today, we’re talking about the original Niro crossover.

“Kia’s electrified vehicle momentum continues with the launch of the all-new second-generation Niro, which offers more refinement, versatility, connectivity, and technology than ever…The 2023 Niro was designed for today’s needs and for sustainable future mobility.” – Steven Center, COO & EVP, Kia America

The all-new 2023 Kia Niro crossover made its at the 2022 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Going on from April 15 – 24, 2022, the doors are opening to the public soon enough, but we got plenty of details to share already. Currently in its second generation, the Niro is powerful, aerodynamic, attractive, comes with a tech-focused package. Following the new Kia Corp mantra, “Opposites United”, the Niro is a perfect combination of one of the hottest car types on the market – crossovers – while also making a statement that alternative fuel vehicles can be as great as those still running on gasoline.
