Kia Motors is the Next All-Electric Automaker

miami-lakes-kia-niro-ev

Kia Motors sure is aiming to be the world’s leading mass-market electric vehicle producer. Although car manufacturer and brand Tesla has a few years on Kia, the Korean automaker is intent on bringing electric vehicles (EVs) to the public more now than ever. After their Imagine by Kia concept/presentation, it’s clear that going forward, Kia will be shifting towards clean energy vehicles and going green. Their success with their current lineup of plug-in hybrids and EVs are already proof that Kia Motors can be the automaker to do it.

A new, all-electric platform is what Kia promised. It would be the first EV vehicle from the automaker that had no predecessor. Not only this, but Kia Motors is restructuring the brand in a sense that will not only make plug-in hybrids and EVs more desirable but also make them affordable without needing to be a luxury item. It’s a goal that Alper Celik, Senior Product Manager for Kia Motors Europe had a lot to say during the 2019 Geneva Motor Show when interviewed by InsideEvs.com.

“Why are we shifting to electrics? We are doing it for the sake of a green environment and bringing this technology into the mainstream of society, not making it just a niche product. We must electrify the whole society… Kia is doing it in a more accessible way, opening up a big door to mainstream customers. What Kia does with EVs is important for the whole industry.”

2020 Kia Telluride Specs Highlights

miami-lakes-kia-telluride-2020

With the 2020 Kia Telluride going into production, Kia Motors has finally released all of the specs about this SUV in a recent press release. Now that the all-new 2020 Kia Telluride has made its official on-road and off-road debut, the new SUV is not the typical family vehicle. Built after its namesake, the midsize Telluride SUV tackled mountain passes, rugged off-road trails, and nearly every other kind of road during some test driving rounds in Colorado. It’s the largest Kia model to date, powered by a 291hp 3.8-liter V6, and ready for adventure. Here are some of the highlights.

Powertrain and Engineering

Let’s talk about what’s going on under the hood. The only option mentioned is an Atkinson Cycle LAMBDA II 3.8-liter V6 engine, optimized with gasoline direct injection for faster combustion cycles, and able to generate 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed transmission, the standard drivetrain will presumably be front-wheel drive (FWD), but all-wheel drive (AWD) is quickly becoming a popular option making its way into Kia Motors vehicles.

With four-wheel independent suspension, an available active on-demand all-wheel drive system provides enhanced driving performance by actively distributing torque between front and rear wheels depending on road conditions and driver input. The system utilizes electro-hydraulic AWD coupling to precisely activate the multi-plate clutch plate, that in turn constantly redistributes the amount of power transferred to the front and rear wheels. This is especially noticeable when switching between one of four drive modes – Smart, Eco, Sport, and Comfort.

Kia Motors is the Automaker Changing the Industry

miami-lakes-kia-imagine-ev

Now that the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show has ended, we’ve seen all the auto industry had to offer over nearly two weeks. Kia Motors is one automaker that stood out, not because of a model or concept they debuted, but more of a promise for the future of their lineup. It’s not surprising – many names in the auto industry are starting to bring electric motors and batteries into the mix of their vehicles. Kia Motors, however, may have the most alternative fuel vehicles in their lineup than any other automaker. Not only this, but Kia has been on a mission to change the auto industry and are intent on leading the way. Style, tech, alternative fuel are the cornerstones of the new Kia Motors, but can they deliver?

Style

What pops to mind when talking about Kia Motors and style? Is it the Kia Stinger? Currently the icon for Kia Motors, the Kia Stinger brought a whole new attitude to Kia Motors. The automaker was intent on “designing cars that drive as good as they look,” and the Kia Stinger definitely delivered. Able to surpass costly luxury cars that claim to drive fast, the Kia Stinger’s performance may have been the jumping off point for Kia Motors going GT, while giving all of their new vehicles a little taste of the Stinger’s style.

Making cars that look great is one thing, but a vehicle that performs at its best is definitely the GT line of the Kia Stinger. With different drive modes for sharp turns or a long ride, drivers enjoy getting behind the wheel of a Kia Stinger GT. Now, Kia Motors is coming out with a GT for many of its vehicles, starting with the 2020 Kia Soul, Kia Forte GT, and Kia Rio GT. If the automaker can deliver on performance this well, can they also upgrade the tech?

Kia Partners with Amazon to Connect with the Youth

miami-lakes-kia-amazon-charger

We’ve discussed how Kia Motors is connecting with the younger generation in the past. The automaker used the Super Bowl to advertise their Great Unknowns Scholarship – instead of hiring another celebrity to drive one of their vehicles, they opted for a good cause instead. Recently, Kia Motors became the official sponsor of two very different from popular youth past times. One is their sponsorship of the K-Pop World Tour of BLACPINK. The other is their official sponsorship of the League of Legends European Championship (For Demacia!) Now, they’re connecting to those of us who find shopping online the easiest way to get what we need (or want) quickly. Consumers that drive an electric or plug-in hybrid Kia Motors model can now order a home charger and installation through Amazon (amzn.to/2TQnuf5).

Yes, recently Kia Motors America (KMA) announced its partnership with Amazon Home Services and their new program for Kia plug-in vehicle consumers. Like the regular service, instead of needing to call up a hotline or customer service and planning out the best time and date, consumers can click on the link above and will find a program with Amazon where technicians can install the electric vehicle charging stations at the customer’s house or office. Kia Motors says buying and installing the home charging station will be as easy as purchasing anything else on Amazon, possibly even through Alexa.

The All-New 2020 Kia Soul Brings the Goods

miami-lakes-automall-2020-kia-soul

Those well informed in the auto industry like to talk about the best times to shop for a car and how to get a good deal. Many like the joke that the best time is after Halloween – just like vendors and grocery stores that discount candy after the event is over, the last quarter of the year is also when new vehicles start coming out – like the newly redesigned 2020 Kia Soul, one of the first vehicles we’ll see from Kia Motors new GT lineup. With the arrival of the 2020 model in dealerships in late 2019, consumers can grab a deal on the outgoing 2019 model, but we’re not sure if someone can really pass up the all-new 2020 Kia Soul.

All-New Kia Soul

In late October 2018, Kia Motors let the news slip, and during the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2020 Kia Soul was revealed alongside its electric variant, the 2020 Kia Soul EV. The two shared some aesthetics and features, including a new wrap around windshield that gives the entire front fascia a slick look, but only the 2020 Kia Soul has any mentions of a new lineup from Kia Motors. Undisclosed as much as their new GT lineup, the 2020 Kia Soul also features an X-line trim, suggesting Kia Motors has many plans bubbling up.

In October 2018 (hint), Kia Motors announced the new direction they’re taking the business in. The 2018 Kia Stinger sports car had a larger impact on the automaker than we may have thought because after the Kia Stinger GT, Kia Motors decided to open an exclusive GT line and produce more GT models. Think sports car, but with high-end premium features that could land it in the luxury car segment. After all, the Kia Stinger is faster than many high-end luxury vehicles in a race, why not up the ante?

Comparison of Kia Stinger and Dodge Charger

miami-lakes-automall-kia-stinger-dodge-charger

Back when the 2018 Kia Stinger first came out, we were blown away. So was everyone else with how many awards the Kia Stinger won from the day of its debut and throughout the year. We also wanted to let consumers know that, although the Kia Stinger is on the luxury end of sports cars, it still makes a good case for four-door family sedans, and if looking for something similar but a smaller price tag, the Kia Optima is a good choice. Speaking of four-door family cars, the 2019 Dodge Charger is also making a testament to the class segment, and with both sports cars here at Miami Lakes Automall, we think family cars are here to stay.

More Power!

For now, anyways. With Dodge going electric in the coming model years, stating that 2020 will see some hybrid options, possibly with the Challenger or Charger nametag, it might be a good time to look at getting a four-door family car while it can still be called a sports car. Yes, although both vehicles have some pretty standard powertrains, a four-cylinder turbo in the Stinger and the 3.6-liter V6 in the Charger, many would still call them sports cars, and there’s a pretty obvious reason why – potential.

Sure, the base Kia Stinger trim comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood, able to generate 255 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It may not have the same oomph of the 365-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine under the hood of the Stinger GT trims, but it still has launch. The vehicle drivers like a sports car with either powertrain, and with all-wheel drive, the Stinger can handle a variety of road conditions.

Kia Updates the Kia Niro and Niro Plug-in Hybrid

miami-lakes-kia-2019-geneva-motor-show-niro-hybrid-plug-in

With Kia Motors promising a lot of changes in the few years with their “Imagine by Kia” presentation at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, they’re also putting some upgraded models on display. Set to come out in 2020 for the United States, some tweaked hybrid models will be getting a facelift for some new style. Most notably, with their current success, the Kia Niro hybrid crossover and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid crossover will be getting some new fresh style inside and out, along with new tech and safety features to increase the already great quality of each. What better way than to debut both at the Geneva Motor Show?

Based on the visuals, it seems like the Kia Niro and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid are adopting some aesthetics from their upcoming electric counterpart, the Kia Niro EV (e-Niro in UK markets). That tends to happen, improving on already great designs after the second or third attempt. The cabins have also been improved with new interior materials and infotainment technology. It even includes some telecommunications upgrades.

Kia Unveils New EV Concept at the Geneva Motor Show

miami-lakes-automall-imagine-by-kia-ev-concept-car-geneva-motor-show-2019

Just a week before the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, Kia Motors teased its new electric vehicle concept model, and now we know what it is. Unveiled at the motor show is “Imagine by Kia”. That sounds more like a tagline than a model name, but at the moment, that’s what the automaker is calling this handsome, muscular not sure if it’s a mid-size crossover or four-passenger family car concept. With the intention of making electric vehicles fun to drive and no longer a luxury or niche, Kia Motors is focusing on the design and performance of the new electric vehicle along with its powertrain and range.

“Automotive design is about capturing the heart and making it beat that bit faster for that bit longer. We believe that there’s absolutely no reason why that should change simply because the car is electric…That’s why our all-electric concept is designed to not only get your pulse racing but to also signpost our holistic and emotional approach to electrification.” – Gregory Guillaume, Vice President of Design for Kia Motors Europe

“Imagine by Kia” will be the automakers first foray into a purely electric vehicle. This isn’t to say they don’t have all-electric vehicles, such as the Kia Soul EV or the Kia Niro EV (also known as e-Niro). Unlike the award-winning e-Niro electric crossover and the electric Soul hatchback, “Imagine by Kia” is the first of its line, not based on an already successful gasoline-powered sibling. That’s what Kia means when they call it their “first pure electric” vehicle.
