Jeep Gladiator 4Xe Hits a Bump in the Reveal Road

Monday, December 20th, 2021

It’s not every day a heavy-hitting automaker admits that the competition led them back to the drawing board. But Jeep is brave enough to hit the reset button, even amidst a successful refresh.

Of course, the Jeep Wrangler has always served at the forefront of Jeep’s affection. Since the Wrangler is the apple of the automaker’s eye, its recent refresh welcomed new trim packages and beefy off-road options like the factory’s 37-inch tires. However, these are mere examples of how Jeep knocks it out of the park with fresh, innovative redesigns.

Somehow the attention the Jeep Wrangler renders does not parallel to its first cousin once removed, the Jeep Gladiator pickup truck. According to Mopar Insiders, the transfer of the  Wrangler’s prominent electrified 4Xe powertrain proved more difficult than Jeep anticipated.

Mopar Insider is a reliable source for automotive information, and if its reports are accurate, then the Jeep Gladiator 4Xe won’t be seen or heard until 2024. Unfortunately, the Gladiator 4Xe would surface one model year after the mid-cycle refresh of the esteemed Wrangler.

There are no expectations for wholesale alterations to the Wrangler. So It’s safe to assume that the Wrangler will endure fewer technological and feature upgrades necessary to contend against the Ford Bronco.

When properly equipped, the Ford Bronco Badlands trim with Sasquatch mode features Trail Turn Assist and an electronic disconnecting sway bar which is enough to leave any automaker shaking in its boots. But Jeep wants to ensure the Wrangler competes for the marathon and not just the race. So other Jeep projects fall to the waist, as the Wrangler takes precedence.

Several modes in the Jeep lineup engage electrons in the powertrain, such as the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. Moreover, Jeep unmasked an objective of a fully electrified lineup by 2025, and with the Gladiator 4Xe extended a year, Jeep can still obtain that objective.

Although unfortunate, the Gladiator 4Xe has hit the pause button on Jeep’s DVR. So it’s not illogical for the Wrangler to hit center stage. After all, the Wrangler is Jeep’s most distinctive model.

At the time of writing, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4Xe consists of a 2.0-L turbocharged four with two electric motors paired with an eight-speed automatic. The tandem generates 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, plus 18 miles of all-electric range. So let’s anticipate modest enhancements for 2023.

Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) unveiled its new half doors for the 2021 Jeep Gladiator. Offering a heightened sense of open-air freedom, the new half doors enable an already invigorating off-road experience.

“Open-air freedom is a hallmark of the Jeep brand. Following our introduction of new half doors for Jeep Wrangler earlier this year, we are now giving passionate Gladiator owners an opportunity to let even more of the outside in.” – Vice President of Jeep Brand North America, Jim Morrision

Dual-Door Group

The factory innovated, examined, and supported the new half-door option, enriching the Gladiator’s production style, protection, and passenger safety. Before the Dual-Door, The Jeep Gladiator received the highest rank in midsize pickup within the J.D. Power 2021 Initial Quality Study (IQS). As a result, Jeep wishes to sustain the heavyweight title with lower window ledges and half doors, providing heightened visibility when maneuvering on and off the road.

Full doors and half doors are available from the new Jeep Gladiator Dual-Door Group on all Jeep Gladiator trims through the Mopar Custom Ship as part of new vehicle purchase. The weightless, heavy-duty aluminum half doors come packaged within the vehicle.

The new half doors are compatible with these features: power mirrors, blind-spot detection, passive and nonpassive entry handles, and power locks. Alternate from full doors to half doors in mere minutes. Just utilize the existing hinge locations and wiring connections.

The new upper window concocts a weather-tight seal that features zippered plastic windows for simple removal. The upper windows come in two different materials: base-model vinyl similar to the Gladiator’s soft-top roof or premium acrylic that resembles the pickup truck’s premium soft-top roof. In addition, an easy tool-free dual-guide post feature comes equipped for the installation and removal of each upper-door frame.

“We work closely with our friends at Jeep to create and properly engineer new accessories. Across the entire Jeep vehicle lineup, we offer more than 500 quality-tested, factory-backed parts and accessories.” -North America Vice President, Mopar Service, Parts & Customer Care, Mark Bosanac
