The 2016 Ram 3500 Now Has More Torque
The 2016 Ram 3500 now has even more torque than its predecessor. This is thanks to the turbo diesel engine that circulates through the 3500’s Tradesman and SLT trims. The Ram has best in class towing capability that’s rated at 31,210 pounds max. That wasn’t a typo; it can really tow 31,210 pounds. Since the curb weight of this vehicle is 14,000 pounds, the Ram 3500 can tow over twice its own weight. The torque and horsepower required to PULL (pun certainly intended) this off means we are about to see some pretty big numbers with the Cummins turbo diesel engine.
The horsepower of the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 engine is 385 horsepower. That’s a modest amount of horsepower for a truck this size, and I bet it sounds great. But in order to tow, it needs more torque than horsepower. The 6.7-liter Cummins engine delivers plenty of that, and is able to put out 900 pound-feet or torque. Other Features that Improve Towing
Even though increasing the torque is the main way to improve the towing capability of trucks, it’s not the only way. Ram recognizes the body of the truck is just as important as what’s under the hood, especially when it comes to a truck towing weights up to 31k. The Ram sits on a strong 50 KSI steel frame for a foundation. This frame is hydroformed and incorporates an additional crossmember for strength and to help with weight distribution. The hydroformed front and rear rail contours also help keep the suspension components and mounts in place. Like Ram says on their website “A truck is only as strong as the steel it’s built on.”
The suspension on the Ram 3500 is a three-link front-end suspension. It has a large stabilizer bar, and it uses springs and shocks that are positioned further on the outside of the vehicle. This helps create a smoother ride while towing heavy weight. Ram used the separate rear suspension to ensure that drivers will have almost perfect rear handling while towing with the SLT trim. This is thanks to the separate auxiliary leaf springs in the back. These leaf springs can be pushed to the limit when it comes to weight, and still allow the Ram 3500 SLT with dual rear-wheels to handle exceptionally well.
Ram also provided the option of an available rear air suspension. This suspension is able to provide the driver with a level load no matter what they are towing, or what they are driving on. This is a huge benefit for towing; all it takes is the push of a button and you can select from two ride height selections: normal or Alternate Ride Height. The second option is what provides the Ram with the ability to align automatically and electronically with the trailer. This is located on the bumper, and allows the trailer’s electrical system to be hooked up with a simple push, and then stay connected; even on rough terrain. Ram also integrated some seriously heavy-duty hooks in the back that are directly mounted to the frame. This ensures a safe and solid connection for you and others while towing your trailer. Especially since these hooks are mounted on the 50 KSI hydroformed steel frame.

Need a little boost when it comes to towing capability? Rams got you covered. The 3500 is engineered with a tow/haul mode that helps the transmission shift depending on what’s being towed. Need a more aggressive downshift for when you are hauling heavy loads? All you need to do is push the button and let the tow/haul mode work its magic.
Beating the Competition
Compared to the other trucks in its class, the Ram 3500 is standing tall and proud. 2016 will be remembered as a golden year for Ram; not only was Ram able to beat Chevy in this class, but they were able to beat Ford as well. The only vehicle that comes close to matching the Ram 3500 in towing capability is Ford’s Superduty truck, which is shy by 10 pounds for towing capacity. Chevy’s 3500 Silverado comes in 3rd with a lackluster 23,200 pounds for max towing capacity.
