The Kia Niro was a huge win for the automaker. Starting with the initial release of the world’s first hybrid minivan, the Niro immediately became popular with the consumer base and launched a plug-in hybrid variant to follow. It took a little longer for the Niro EV to hit statestide, but it’s definitely a part of the lineup. For 2022, Kia hasn’t changed the Niro much, and that’s because the original was already such a bang!
The 2022 Kia Niro has mostly the same lineup, with an LXS Special Edition joining the LX, LXS, Touring, Touring Special Edition, and EX Premium. Each trim is powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder and Full Parallel Hybrid System, made up of a 1.6-liter DOHC gasoline engine and an electric motor powered by a 240V lithium-ion battery. Combined, the powertrain was capable of generating 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
Driving and Handling
All trims come with front-wheel drive (FWD) and transfer power via a dual clutch 6-speed automatic transmission. However, some trims have different fuel economy. The 2022 Kia Niro LX gets 53 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway, whereas the LXS, LXS Special Edition, and EX Premium have a combined fuel economy of 49 mpg. The Touring Special Edition gets 46 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.
