 2019 Chevy Volt Performance

Engine Type

The Volt’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor, combined, produce 149 horsepower. No other engine option is available. Not to worry, because this Chevy will keep you moving in the city and on the highway.

Running at 53 mph, the Volt’s all-electric range is one of the loftiest of any plug-in hybrid. With the help of the gasoline engine, the Volt has a combined range of about 420 miles. Another way to recharge the battery is by using the regenerative brakes which also work to capture the energy. On electric-only power, the vehicle gets 106 MPGe combined.

There are several methods to charging the Volt. Using a standard 3-prong 120-volt outlet you can charge the battery in 13 hours. If you revert to the 240-volt outlet, you can reduce the charging time.

The 3.6-kWh comes as an optional onboard charger, taking the Volt about 4.5 hours to charge. There’s also a 7.2-kWh built-in charger which is new for 2019. It takes 2.3-hours of loading time.

The 240-volt is standard on Premier models and available on the LT. The new 7.2 kW onboard charger provides up to 22 miles per hour charging, with the available 240-volt charging unit (which requires professional installation). It's twice as fast as the preceding model.

Driving and Handling

The Volt has a feature called Regen on Demand. Regen on Demand allows the driver to press a paddle on the steering wheel to trigger more aggressive regenerative braking. Volt helps to recharge its own battery through the regenerative braking, which catches the lost kinetic energy and shifts back to the battery.
