2019 Chevy Traverse Performance

Engine Type

The L, LS, LT, Premier and High Country have a 3.6L V6 engine. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on the LS, 1LT, 3LT, RS, 3.6L V6 and on The Premier. Most Traverse trims feature a 310-horsepower V6 engine; the RS trim offers a Turbocharged 4-Cylinder 255-horsepower engine. Both engine options are mated to a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission.

Driving and Handling

The 3.6-liter V-6 pulls strongly and the Traverse is on the quicker side of its class. The cabin is so quiet that you need to steal a glance at the tachometer to ensure the engine is running. The Traverse features what is perhaps the most seamless automatic stop/start.

A turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is also available but it’s only offered on the front-wheel-drive RS variant and is slower than the V-6. When parking or maneuvering at low speed, the Traverse feels every bit its size. Pick up the pace, and the big Chevy feels smaller. Steering effort is low, but the system is precise and makes aiming the big SUV easy. The Traverse’s suspension is turned for a good balance between handling and ride comfort.

Exterior Features

On the outside, the 2019 Chevy Traverse gets the new Premier badge on the liftgate as well as new bright roof-rack cross rails on the Premier (1LZ) and High Country (2LZ) models when those are ordered with the Hit The Road Package. For the prior model year, the roof-rack cross rails were black, and the black units are now only available on LT, RS, and Redline Edition Models.

Interior Features

The Traverse seats seven or eight people, depending on whether you opt for a trim with second-row captain’s chairs. There are two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the second-row outboard seats. The back of the vehicle also offers plenty of space.

When it comes to cargo space, you get 23 cubic feet of space with all seats in use. Fold the second- and third-row seats down, and you get over 98 cubic feet of space. The most notable change on the 2019 Traverse is the user-activated heated steering wheel, which automatically turns on when selectable automatic activation enabled.

The remaining are changes to packages. First, the Cargo Package no longer includes an LPO-level integrated cargo liner, which will not be included in the Floor Liner Package. And second, the Premium Carpet Mat Package is now only available on High Country (2LZ) models.
