2018 Ram 3500
If you’re in the market for a step up to the big leagues, only a heavy-duty pickup truck will suffice, and the 2018 Ram 3500 has got you covered. One of the most capable pickup trucks in its class, this heavy-duty monster offers a maximum towing capacity of of more than 31,000 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 7,390 pounds. The 2018 Ram 3500 gains a standard rearview camera and an exterior switch in the tailgate bed for the LED bed lights. Let’s see what else is offered for the 2018 model year.
Avail. Engine Type
Like most heavy-duty pickup trucks, the 2018 Ram 3500 is offered in multiple configurations - three cab styles, two bed lengths, three engine options, two transmissions, and seven trim levels. Those trim levels include, the Tradesman, SLT, Lone Star/Big Horn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and the Limited. Additionally, there are two drivetrains available, 4x2 and 4x4. Just like the 2018 Ram 1500 and 2500, the Ram 3500 is offered in three cab sizes - regular, crew and mega cab. The regular cab is only available with an 8-foot bed length and the mega is only offered with a 6-foot 4-inch box, while the crew cab came come with either an 8-foot or 6-foot 4-inch bed length.
Standard on the Tradesman, SLT, Lone Star, and Big Horn trims is a 5.7-liter V8 HEMI engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) technology that optimizes its performance and fuel efficiency. The 5.7-liter engine produces 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited trim levels are equipped with the heavy-duty 6.4-liter heavy duty V8 HEMI engine with MDS. This 6.4-liter engine produces 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. Due to the fact that the 6.4-liter engine was developed with a Multi-Displacement System (MDS), its is able to conserve fuel efficiency on the road. Once the truck is at a steady speed, the MDS will shut off 4-of-the-8 cylinders.
Additionally, all trim levels have the option to upgrade to a 6.7-liter I6 Cummins turbo diesel engine, the strongest in the lineup. Specifically made for towing power and hauling, the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine can deliver 350 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque when paired to a six-speed manual transmission. When paired to a six-speed lighter duty automatic transmission, the 6.7-liter engine can produce 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque; if paired with the six-speed heavy duty transmission, then the 2018 Ram 3500 can generate up to 385 horsepower and a whopping 930 lb-ft of torque. Lastly, a six-speed manual transmission is an option for all trim levels.
With all the power included in each of the previous engine options, the Ram 3500’s towing capabilities are designed to maximize efficiency and tow just about anything a consumer might need. Each engine option allows for a certain amount of towing and payload capacity, depending on the strength each engine delivers. Starting with the standard 5.7-liter V8 HEMI, this engine has a towing capacity of 17,240 pounds, and a payload capacity of 4,070 pounds. Moving up, is the 6.4-liter heavy duty V8 HEMI, this engine and has a maximum towing capacity of 16,320 and payload capacity of 4,249 pounds. Lastly, and the most powerful engine, is the 6.7-liter I6 Cummins turbo diesel engine. Once the Ram 3500 is equipped with the 6.7-liter engine and six-speed heavy duty transmission, the towing capacity is incredible but also varies depending on the hitch that is used. With Ram’s newly-designed hitches, the 2018 Ram 3500 has a towing capacity of 30,000 pounds; with a gooseneck hitch, it can tow up to 31,210 pounds; and with a conventional hitch, it can tow 20,000 pounds.
