Engine Types

Made up of three trims (LX, EX, and SX Turbo), the 2018 Kia Sportage has two engines that make up the powertrain lineup. Under the hood of the LX and EX is a 2.4-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine able to generate 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Although consumers are able to choose a front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drivetrain for the Sportage, the horsepower and torque are the same on each.

The Sportage SX Turbo is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine for more power without sacrificing too much fuel economy. This engine generates 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque with front-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive (AWD), the SX Turbo can can provide 237 horsepower and the same torque.

Engineering and Fuel Economy

All engines are optimized by a Dual Overhead Camshaft design (DOHC), Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) for more efficient fuel delivery into the engine’s combustion chamber, and Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) that increases the performance of the engine by altering the frequency of an engine cylinder’s induction and exhaustion of air and fuel. Each engine is also paired with an electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic, a gearshift that allows for manual shifting by the driver.

Due to the different drivetrains, there is a variety of fuel economy ratings for each trim. The LX trim with FWD gets 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway; with AWD, the LX gets 21 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. If driving with FWD, the EX trim gets 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway; it has the same fuel economy as the LX with AWD. The SX Turbo has the most changes, with 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway if driving with FWD, 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway with AWD.
