Engine + Trims

The Wrangler lineup has been condensed into four trims, and the four-door Wrangler is no longer being called the “Wrangler Unlimited” it is now being called the Wrangler 4-door. The Wrangler 2-door is available in three trims (Sport, Sport S, and Rubicon) and the Wrangler 4-door is available in four trims (Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon). The 2018 Wrangler JL is available with three engine options, all of which give drivers a unique driving exprangler erience. The 3.6-liter V6 engine returns to the lineup with upgrades, whereas the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine and all-new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine are new additions to the Wrangler lineup.

3.6L V6 Engine

The 3.6-liter V6 engine has been available on the Wrangler lineup for quite some time, but Jeep made some modifications to it for the Wrangler JL. New to the 3.6-liter V6 engine is the standard Engine Stop-Start (ESS), which is a technology implemented to increase fuel efficiency by turning off the engine when it is idling. The 3.6-liter V6 engine can produce up to 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque and buyers have the option of pairing the engine to a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is a first for the Wrangler.

3.0L EcoDiesel Engine

Buyers interested in an engine that offers more torque than horsepower, there is the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine. The 3.0L EcoDiesel is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and it generates 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Like the 3.6L engine, the 3.0L EcoDiesel engine has Engine Stop-Start (ESS) and it has a number of other modifications to improve fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Turbocharged 2.0L I-4 Engine

The all-new turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 engine has eTorque technology, and it offers buyers a powerful and efficient engine option. The eTorque technology turns the Wrangler JL into a mild-hybrid system, so a battery is used to help control some of the vehicle’s functions, which reduces the amount of fuel the engine has to use. The 2.0L engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and together the powertrain produces best-in-class 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Standard Upgrades

The interior of the Jeep Wrangler JL has been nicely updated. Designers made the cabin user-friendly for drivers to reduce the amount of distractions and effort needed for a driver to adjust settings in the vehicle while on the road. The center console and center stack has been redesigned for ease and the new design also looks more modern and has high-quality materials.

The Wrangler JL also has a more advanced and intuitive Uconnect system, which is FCA’s brand of infotainment system. Depending on the trim, the Uconnect system is paired to a 5-, 7- or 8.4-inch touchscreen and all Jeep Wrangler models come standard with a backup rearview camera. To give drivers and passengers more entertainment options, there are USB ports in the front and rear passenger seats.

New Options

Though Jeep updated the exterior design of the Wrangler JL, it still looks like the rugged off-road SUV that people love. It’s equipped with two round headlights, the iconic seven-slot grille, and a full-size spare tire on the swing gate. The biggest change Jeep made to the lineup is the new selection of roof options. The Wrangler JL is available with the Sky One-Touch powertop, an all-new premium Sunrider soft-top, and a hardtop option. The new Sky One-Touch powertop makes removing the top a breeze for drivers because it opens with the push of a button, which is a feature that hasn’t been available before.

New Doors and Windows

Other features made to the exterior of the Jeep include new door designs, windshield configurations and improved aerodynamics. Door options include a new high-strength lightweight aluminum doors and a new half door design that will be made available on 2019 models and improvements made to the windshield design make it much easier to fold down and adjust.

The Wrangler is available with 33-inch off-road tires and the Wrangler Sahara is available with an all-new two-speed transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, and the Wrangler Rubicon is equipped with a Rock-Trac 4x4 system that features heavy duty next-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1.
