Ram trucks! Some of the best and most trusted machines out there for light- and heavy-duty jobs. Be it towing a boat or carrying supplies for the construction site, Ram trucks make heavy tasks a lot easier. With 2017 only several weeks away and all of Ram’s 2017 trucks out, it’s time to give a little overview of what there is to look forward to for Ram’s 2017 model-year.
Ram Light Duty Line: 2017 Ram 1500
The Ram 1500 is Ram’s light-duty truck option. The lineup consists of 11 trims and three engine options. The base engine is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that generates 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. There is also a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine for consumers looking for a better fuel economy and more torque (420 lb-ft of torque.) We’ve discussed the benefits of diesel before. Then there is the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine which generates 395-horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.
The Ram 1500 is available with a 2x4 or 4x4 drivetrain and in three cab sizes -- two-door three-passenger crew cab; four-door six-passenger regular cab; and the larger four-door six-passenger quad cab. The maximum towing capacity of the 5.7-liter gas engine is 10,640 pounds with a payload capacity of 1,900 pounds. For easy storage of equipment and tools, a Class-Exclusive RamBox Cargo Management System is available, and for more convenient access, wheel-to-wheel side steps can be installed.
The two special editions on a Ram 1500 are the 2017 Ram 1500 Sport Ignition Orange and the Ram 1500 Night. The Sport is powered by a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine and has a max towing capacity of 10,300 pounds. It comes in Ignition Orange, as the name suggests, and only 2,000 models will be available in that paint job, making it a rare item for collectors. The 2017 Ram 1500 Night comes with all new features, integrated with Mopar performance parts and aggressive styling with a black honeycomb grille, black badges, a sport performance hood, and more. It’s a bold truck that dominates the road.
Starting MSRP for the 2017 Ram 1500 is $26,295 with 4x2 powertrain.
Ram Heavy Duty Line: 2017 Ram 2500/3500
After the Ram 1500, Ram trucks go a step up and turn into heavy-duty trucks, and these models are the Ram 2500 and 3500. The Ram Heavy Duty Line includes eight trims and three available engines, each with different configurations and designs pending on the work that needs to get done.
5.7L HEMI Engines
The base engine is the 5.7-liter HEMI V8. It’s available on the Ram 1500, but on the 2500/3500 models the engine has variable-valve timing (VVT), a process designed to optimize performance and fuel economy. That same engine is also available with CNG instead of VVT, a compressed natural gas (CNG) engine. The horsepower of the 5.7-liter engines ranges from 350-410 horses. The 5.7-liter CNG has a max towing capacity of 7,700 pounds and the 5.7-liter without CNG has a maximum towing capacity of 11,900 pounds.
6.4L HEMI Engine
There is also a 6.4-liter Heavy Duty V8 HEMI with a multi-displacement system (MDS) integrated to save gas at steady speeds by closing four of the eight cylinders. This engine generates 420 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The 6.4-liter engine has a maximum towing capacity of 13,300 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 3,990 pounds on the Ram 2500.
6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel Engines
Finally, there is the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, and it is available in three calibrations. The standard setup is a 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel engine that is paired to a six-speed manual transmission. It produces 350 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque.
There is also the same engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, and it produces 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque. The engine with the automatic transmission gives the Ram 2500 a maximum towing capacity of 18,000 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 3,160 pounds.
Finally there is the 6.7-liter Cummins High Output Turbo Diesel engine with 385 horsepower and best-in-class 900 lb-ft of torque. This engine is only available on the Ram 3500. It gives the Ram 3500 a maximum towing capacity of 17,750 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 4,040 pounds.
Made with a hydroformed steel frame that can withstand 50,000 pounds of pressure, the Ram 2500 and 3500 models are built tough, durable, and able to take on any challenge. Not only are some of the more high-tech safety instruments installed, but a handy cargo-view camera is also available so drivers can keep an eye on everything they’re hauling. The available cabs are the regular cab with an 8-foot bed, crew cab with a 6’4” bed, crew cab with an 8-foot bed, and a mega cab with a 6’4” bed.
The starting MSRP for the base 2017 Ram 2500 Tradesman 4x2 with a regular cab is $32,095. The starting MSRP for the base 2017 Ram 3500 Tradesman 4x2 with a regular cab is $33,195.
All Ram trucks are covered by the following warranties: 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty for gas engines and a 5-year/100,000-mile warranty on diesel engines.
