2017 Kia Optima

The Kia Optima has come a long way. Still one of Kia’s popular sedans, it’s now available as a hybrid and even a PHEV. It wouldn’t be a smart choice to take a vehicle that isn’t so great and make it a hybrid, hoping that will increase sales. So that can only mean before these variations came about, the original Kia Optima was just as good if not better. Now in it’s 2017 model-year, the Kia Optima is still a great vehicle to own or lease.

Engine Types

There are three engines available on the 2017 Kia Optima lineup. The standard engine, found on the Optima LX and EX is a 2.4-liter DOHC engine. The engine generates 185 horsepower, and the vehicle gets a fuel economy of 25/36 mpg city/highway. A little more fuel efficient option that is  nearly as powerful is the smaller turbocharged 1.6-liter DOHC engine on the Optima LX 1.6T. This engine produces 178 horsepower and has a fuel economy of 28/37 mpg city/highway.

The third engine on the Optima line is a 2.0-liter DOHC with a turbocharger, and it puts out 245 horsepower. This engine is found on the Optima SX and SX Limited trims and both trims have a fuel economy of 22/31 mpg city/highway.

Engineering and Handling

All of these engines are designed with a dual-overhead camshaft (DOHC), known to take some of the stress off the engine, which leads to better engine performance. They are also built with dual CVVT, which stands for “continuously variable valve timing”, a variation of VVT technology that can increase an engine’s output and fuel economy. All of those technologies make all three of the Optima’s available engines powerful and fuel efficient.

Depending on the trim, the driver will find one of two transmissions that are generally the same. One is a 6-speed automatic, found on all trims but the Optima LX 1.6T, which is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. All of the transmissions are a Sportmatic Sports shifter that functions like an automatic transmission but also allows the driver to manually change gears if they wish.

Exterior Features

A lot of exterior features are shared among the five Optima trims. Standard throughout the lineup are power-adjustable mirrors with LED turn signals, solar control glass, and automatic on/off headlights. Only the base trim, the Optima LX, doesn’t have a few features that are standard on the other trims, but buyers have the option to upgrade certain features.

Other features are LED headlights, a rear spoiler, a panoramic sunroof with power sunshade and sound-absorbing front windows. All trims but the LX have a smart trunk, a trunk that opens in the presence of the driver’s Smart Key.

Interior Features

The shared features change a bit for the interior - many things come in different variations, such as 8-way driver seat adjustment in the Optima LX and LX 1.6T trims, but there is a standard 12-way driver seat adjustment in the other trims (optional on Optima LX and LX 1.6T trims). Other features, like quilted Nappa leather seating trims is only available on the Optima SX Limited. The only standard lineup seating feature is a 60/40 split-fold rear seat for changing up seating arrangements and cargo storage.

Several convenient features are standard across the lineup, and one of these features include drive mode select, an active eco system, and a trip computer that is displayed on a 3.5- or 4.3-inch LCD display. Features like dual-zone automatic a/c temperature control, push button start with engine immobilizer, and driver’s seat memory system are found on most trims after the Optima LX. High-end features like heated front seats, ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats are reserved for the upper-level trims.
