2017 Chevy Malibu and Malibu Hybrid

In a crowd of sedans, the Chevrolet Malibu easily stands out from rest. Its classy style sets it apart from the usual sedan design, but Chevy didn’t sacrifice practicality or comfort for style. The Malibu is spacious and it comes standard with plenty of features. As an award-winning vehicle for years, Chevy knew the Malibu was a great vehicle, so they recently expanded the Malibu lineup to include a hybrid option, the Malibu Hybrid.

Engines and Performance

1.5L DOHC Turbocharged Engine

For the original Chevrolet Malibu, there are two available engine options. The standard engine on the majority of trims (L, LS, and LT) is a 1.5-liter DOHC turbocharged engine with direct-injection and variable valve timing (VVT) technology and it is able to generate 163 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Three bits of technology make this engine special - direct-injection means the fuel is highly pressurized and injected via a fuel line directly into the combustion chamber of each engine cylinder, leading to faster combustion cycles; when built with a double overhead camshaft (DOHC), engines have less stressed cylinders, leading to optimal engine performance; and VVT changes the valve timing of an engine’s cylinders intake/exhaust of fuel/air, also optimizing performance and fuel economy.

2.0L DOHC Turbocharged Engine

The second engine option is available on the Chevy Malibu Premier and it is a 2.0-liter DOHC turbocharged engine, with spark-ignited direct-injection (SIDI) that takes place during the combustion cycle, and VVT. This engine generates 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0-liter DOHC turbo engine is tied to a 9-speed automatic transmission, which has an average fuel economy of 22/33 mpg city/highway.

1.8L Hybrid Engine

The Malibu Hybrid engine is a 1.8-liter hybrid 4-cylinder DOHC engine with SIDI and VVT. This engine generates 124 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque. The transmission was built specifically for the hybrid engine and it is a two-motor drive unit hybrid transmission. The fuel economy of the Malibu Hybrid is amazing. The Malibu Hybrid averages 49 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway.
