A Redesign Exuding Sophistication
Compared to the previous design, the 2016 Sorento experiences a welcomed addition of sleek and sculpted looks that give it a newfound sense of sophistication. This Sorento is the most refined one yet, and is made up of smooth lines and edges for an elegant demeanor, but still has muscular shoulders that give it a sense of power as well. The muscular shoulders sit on a much wider stance than before, and a longer wheelbase continues to establish dominance, while also providing more space in the cabin. Now, the Sorento is able to seat up to seven passengers comfortably.
Some of the upgraded aspects of this elegantly strong car are most noticeable in the front-end where the signature tiger-nose grille is larger and more pronounced, and the headlights now sweep back to match the delicate curve of the front-end. The grille is a captivating and unique pattern, while clusters of LED daytime running lights plopped on each side of the front look like twinkling constellations.
A sweeping curve starts at the hood, and runs up the windshield on to the low-sitting roofline; the aerodynamic nature of the set up allows the air to run unhindered off a spoiler sitting above the tailgate. The muscular shoulders are most noticeable when viewed from the back, and the taillights are set flush with the tailgate, and wrap towards the front of the vehicle.
The overall redesign is aerodynamic, practical, eye-catching, and good looking. It’s a design that’s sure to turn win some hearts on the 2016 market.
UVO eServices is the infotainment system of choice for the 2016 Kia Sorento and it does a lot of stuff. The UVO eServices provides a more personalized and integrated experience with the vehicle, and can be utilized in the vehicle or remotely on a smartphone.
It’s packed with features like advanced voice-recognition technology for hands-free calls and texts, or managing a phone's music library. The telematic suite technology, enabled by a free smartphone app, tacks navigation and diagnostics capabilities to the growing list of functions, as well as rear-camera display, emergency assistance, and parking minder — which can be used to locate the Sorento in a crowded parking lot.
On the entertainment side of the spectrum, the Sorento is far from disappointing. It comes with an HD Radio option, which allows the listener to tune into a crystal-clear experience with standard AM and FM channels, along with local digital FM HD2 and HD3 channels.
Sirius XM Satellite Radio is also an option, and provides over 130 channels for your listening variety, with a Travel Link function that provides information on traffic, fuel prices, weather, and much more. If that still isn’t enough, the Sorento can also play music via Pandora, Bluetooth phone streaming, auxiliary cable, and even USB connectivity.
These entertainment options can all be played through available Clari-Fi audio technology. This technology is an innovative program that can actually take files and restore the music to its original true stereo sound. It’s then played through a ten-speaker Infinity Surround Audio system that includes a center speaker, sub-woofer, and an amplifier. This makes for a unique and powerful sound experience for a quick trip to the grocery store, or a long adventure with the family.
The entertainment aspects aren’t the only innovative type of technology the Sorento has, and it has some intuitive drive assist functions like Surround View Monitor (SVM), Lane Departure Warning (LDWS), Smart Cruise Control (ASCC), and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). With this technology on board, the Sorento is a vehicle that makes driving a breeze.
Advanced Drive Systems
The SVM controls four mounted cameras, and provides a bird’s eye view of the Sorento. When coupled with front and rear parking sensors, parallel parking doesn’t have to be intimidating anymore. The BSD and LDWS are both there to warn the driver of any dangerous driving scenarios on the highway. The BSD can tell the driver when a car is in their blind spot, and the LDWS is capable of keeping the Sorento in the intended lane. Finally, smart cruise control uses sensors on the front of the vehicle to keep a safe distance away from the car in front. That way, there are no emergency stops if the front car slows down and the Sorento owner doesn’t notice.
Along with these intuitive driving assist features, the engine and all-wheel drive system are also worth mentioning. The Sorento has three engine options: the 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbo, and 3.3-liter V6 - paired to an AWD system.
A Range of Engine Options
The 2.4-liter four-cylinder is focused on fuel economy, and returns 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. It still has enough kick to get the Sorento on the highway, putting out 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque.
Upgrading to the middleman of the trio, the 2.0-liter turbo engine focuses on a blend of power and efficiency, putting out a solid 240 horsepower/260 lb-ft of torque, while still getting up to 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined.
If that’s still not enough power, then the 3.3 liter V6 engine is sure to sate that craving with its rating of 290 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy takes a slight hit with this engine option, and it gets (at most) 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined.
These numbers are based on a 2WD platform, and will naturally go down slightly with the Dynamax AWD system, but it’s worth having. Why? Because this system constantly monitors the road and driving conditions, and will detect what the driver needs. That means the drivetrain is staying one step ahead in order to deliver the proper type of performance according to the hazards faced.
