The Dodge Charger Daytona is among the most storied muscle cars ever produced. Since the first 1969 Dodge Charger came out, the Dodge Charger Daytona has remained popular over generations thanks to its unique look and immense speed garnered since inception. The first run only lasted an additional model year, but the first two renditions of this popular muscle vehicle are still cherished by car enthusiasts today. The vehicle was reincarnated over 27 years later in 2006 and the popular HEMI engine drove sales for an additional four years, ending its run in 2009. There was a single addition of the Dodge Charger Daytona that came out in 2013. Since 2017, there have been continual models released, most recently, the 2017 Dodge Charger .

The Birth of the Dodge Charger Daytona

After the limited edition 1969 Dodge Charger 500 failed to win after its NASCAR debut, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona was made. Built as a high-performance, limited-edition version of the Dodge Charger, the Daytona was produced in the summer of 1969 with the sole goal of taking first place at high-profile NASCAR events. Not only did the Charger succeed in winning its first race, the inaugural Talladega 500, the Dodge Charger Daytona was the first vehicle in NASCAR history to break the 200 mph mark, on March 24, 1970, at Talladega, Alabama. Quickly becoming known as the “Winged Warrior” Dodge Charger has a strong history of winning. With 11 years of racing during the 1960s and 1970s, the Charger won 124 NASCAR Cup races and took three drivers to five championships. Richard Petty won three of his seven total NASCAR titles behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger.

27 Years Later, the Dodge Charger Daytona Returns

At the 2005 Chicago Auto Show, the 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona was reintroduced. From the reincarnation of the Dodge Charger Daytona in 2006 through it’s run in 2009, the sales and demand for the Charger Daytona were incredible. It came complete with a black honeycomb grille, unique black “Daytona” and “HEMI” decals. In 2007 through 2009, this special Charger rode on 20-inch wheels, raised from the 18-inch wheels the 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona came with. The five-speed automatic transmission paired with a 5.7-liter V8 HEMI engine that cranks out 340-horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque was the power package of the 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona. This was improved upon later by the 2013 Dodge Charger Daytona.

2013 Dodge Charger Daytona

The debut of the 2013 Dodge Charger Daytona was enhanced and delivered improved performance. The 370-horsepower HEMI V8, rear-wheel drive and iconic design were met with the modern attributes of the Dodge Charger in 2013. The 10-speaker, 552-watt Beats audio system and 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment is still impressive over half a decade later. While Dodge announced they were taking a break from NASCAR, Dodge was still focused on putting out remarkable production muscle cars.

2017: A Return to Form

Dodge Charger fans had two variations to choose from in 2017 when the Dodge Charger Daytona returned to the lineup. The standard Daytona came with the impressive 5.7-Liter HEMI V8, and the Daytona 392 was equipped with a 6.4-Liter V8 HEMI engine. A black spoiler with wide, matte-black stripes stood out with a large black grille and SRT body kit. Available retro colors include Go Mango, Green Go, TorRed and Yellow Jacket. Today, the Daytona is a package option for the Dodge Charger. The Dodge Charger is expected to be in production through the 2021 model year. With a redesign scheduled for 2021, the Charger is set to be reworked and only time will tell if the Daytona namesake is kept. One thing is for sure, if the Daytona is removed, it’ll return at some point in the future.
