The Dodge Charger of today is quite an exhilarating experience for owners and passengers alike. While fewer cars are on the road today, even fewer are packed with the kind of engineering feats offered by the Dodge Charger muscle car. The modern Charger is exceptional and definitely different from the famed Dodge Charger vehicles of old. But just how much faster and stronger is the 2021 Dodge Charger compared to the beloved Charger muscle cars from half a century ago? Does the 1971 Dodge Charger hold up? The Charger from 1971 was new and ran through the 1974 model. The price back then was a staggeringly low $3,775. A rear-wheel drive car with a V8 engine that offers 230 horsepower in the base trim and as much as 425 horsepower at the high end. Dodge manufactured exactly 82,114 of these classic muscle cars.
Improvements and Added Value In the Charger
The Dodge brand is currently enjoying awards that have long been established as some of the most important in the industry: winning a top spot of the J. D. Power Initial Quality Study for 2021. After winning the top spot in 2020, lately the most recent Dodge muscle cars have more than putting a smile on the face of owners. The 2021 Dodge Charger is packed with power, as much as 292 horsepower starting in the base Charger SRT trim and as much as 797 horsepower offered in the top-tier, 2021 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye. We can’t say enough good things about this absolutely gorgeous and stunning Dodge muscle car.
So Which Dodge Charger Is Stronger Between the Two?
For those that are keeping score, that’s a difference of 372 horsepower between the two highest trims for the respective Charger muscle cars of 1971 versus 2021. The Charger is roughly 1,500 pounds heavier in weight compared to the finish offered in the 1971 model year. Today’s Charger ranges in the 4,000 to 4,586 range while the 19171 model year Charger hit in the low 3,000 pound range. Despite the added weight, the modern Charger enjoys the perks of the latest technology to produce faster quarter-times. The 19171 Charger could go 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and finish the quarter-mile in 13.73 seconds at 104 mph. Ready to be impressed? The 2021 Dodge Charger can go from 0 to 60mph in only 4.3 seconds and hits a 12.4 quarter-mile time.
The starting price for a new 2021 Dodge Charger goes for $31,125 MSRP (Plus destination fee). While the Dodge brand looks ahead to offering the upcoming Dodge EV muscle car for a new generation of buyers. These innovative choices are going to lead the way for all automotive brands including the Dodge brand.

(Disclaimer: FCA has come out this month to say they won’t be producing this particular package or trim, however, we still think this is a rumor and take worth reading.)
While the famed Dodge Viper ACR saw its last run wrap up several years ago in 2017, Dodge has found ways to add the Viper in its current muscle line-up. Dodge might be adding parts that made up the Viper ACR into the Challenger, if the latest rumor from Allpar is believed. Dodge is working on producing a brand new ACR version of the Challenger. Speculation about production being slowed down was confirmed with the delay of many Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) vehicles, but the Dodge Challenger will still have a 2021 model year and the ACR version might be one of them. Allpar has said a “long-time source familiar with the project”, has aimed to give drivers even better track performance as the currently-discontinued Viper ACR. Dodge could even up the ante and give the Challenger ACR an even more powerful engine. The 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye gave owners 797 horsepower, which is way above the amount offered in the final Viper ACR.
What Would Be Found In the Challenger ACR?
For those who loved the Dodge Viper over its long and storied run, we can imagine a new Challenger ACR would have to be made as a package, more than a trim. The unique aerodynamics taken from the Viper design, the high-position wing and large splitter, are unique and would probably make this vehicle a rare find for owners. Allpar, if believed, has noted this Challenger ACR will gain large-scale Brembo brakes, a manually adjustable suspension system, and a goal weight of fewer than 4000 pounds. The muscle car will add carbon fiber in the car’s construction to allow the Challenger to be light. This approach, if taken by engineers, would make this the most lightweight Challenger ever. Even better than being light is creating the strongest Challenger. Will there be a 6.2-Liter supercharged V8 taken directly from the Hellcat Redeye? Would Dodge upgrade from the 392 cubic-inch HEMI V8 that is found in the Scat Pack Challenger? We’re speculating, but Dodge would have a lot of choices for the Challenger ACR.
Dodge Is Pumping Out Its Fastest Collection Yet
Dodge is looking to ramp up its horsepower in every vehicle, even the already fast Dodge Durango. The Hellcat trim will end up as an option for the Durango. So, with that knowledge, imagine the future for a hybrid of the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Viper. Though Dodge has not yet confirmed an ACR, we expect Dodge to go forward with a new package for the Challenger, as they have done plenty of times.
As far as the Dodge Challenger, we can’t wait for the 2021 model to come out. The rumor with the ACR has also given news that Fiat Chrysler would alter factory settings so the suspension could be determined by the customer. The change is going to give owners a setting across a bunch of options including the height, caster, and camber at the track, as well as shock damping and rebound. Shocks may be brought over directly from the Viper design, along with the vehicle’s brake system. Should we see a future Challenger ACR created, this will be one of the fastest, track-ready vehicles on the market. Dodge always seems to produce a muscle car that takes over the drag-racing scene each year. 2019 had the aforementioned Hellcat Redeye, the year before that was the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon. Could the 2020 Challenger offer us the ACR? Time will tell soon enough as we’re already in June 2020.

While many know Dodge for creating some of the fastest production vehicles, those in charge of the brand know exactly what they are and what they are not. Dodge has introduced a wave of the fastest muscle cars with their newest Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger entries. They have the Dodge Journey that mixes together luxury with the capabilities of high-speed thrills in their SRT (street racing technology) trim. But where does Dodge see its self heading in the upcoming decade? More than just making an electric future a reality, those in charge have thought long and hard about where to take this high-octane brand.
“Love it or hate it, Dodge has an identity that separates it from the pack,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars.
The State of Dodge
In 2019, cars seem to be disappearing in the automotive industry. Dodge possesses the antidote to keep a car around: make an excellent car and keep the nameplate secure by introducing muscular modifications, aesthetic treatments, and new packages. Technically, the Dodge Challenger has not updated its frame since 2008. However, the Challenger has added the Demon, Redeye, and Dodge Challenger Scat Pack 1320, among others. Fans of the Dodge brand love these high-powered muscle cars that contain over 700 horsepower, including up to 840 horsepower in the aforementioned SRT Demon. While the Demon was discontinued, the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye boasts 797 horsepower and costs way less.
“When we did the Demon, I honest to God thought that was the muscle-car mic drop. As soon as we did it, we were like, ‘What else you got?’” said Tim Kuniskis.
Upcoming 50th Anniversary of the Dodge Challenger
There are some upcoming hallmarks Dodge is getting ready to celebrate. 2019 makes the 50th anniversary of the Dodge Challenger, we’re anticipating to see anniversary editions. In just the past ten years, Dodge has witnessed a 60 percent jump in Challenger and Charger sales, with the Challenger hitting their best sales mark ever in 2018. Regardless of the platform, there are no plans to abandon them since the demand is there. The Dodge Durango has fit the brand as a top choice for those looking for a three-row SUV that never feels like one. Will Dodge create a smaller SUV?
“I’m not going to lie to you and tell you it’s perfectly aligned with the direction that the brand’s headed. But it’s a great-looking car in a great segment that sells extremely well, so I see no problem with Journey,” remarked Tim Kuniskis.

For those who are more excited to jump into their muscle car than anything else or want to spring into a new ride that is sleek and exhilarating, consider Dodge as the choice. Drivers everywhere wish to embrace their car as purchasing a vehicle is one of the most significant investments anyone can make. Dodge muscle cars are the end game for all things fast and for a good reason. Begin the escape with a new Challenger, offering many trims and different levels of excellence. The high-end 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye is beyond detailed with an unrivaled 790 horsepower from the 6.2-Liter HEMI V8 and a dual hood air intake. Go from 0-60 in only 3.4 seconds! How is this possible?
Dodge Perfects Their Launch Control
Dodge improved their Launch Control feature with the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. At the time the since retired muscle car was the most powerful production vehicle on the market, a title now held by the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Consider the power offered by the 650 lb-ft of torque and ability to soar past 200 mph effortlessly, the high-end Challenger is not for the faint of heart. How is that possible? Line Lock was made to engage the front breaks, but not the rear wheels so the vehicle can build up speed without any burnout. However, drivers don’t need a high-end Challenger to enjoy one of the best features made by Dodge. The Launch Control feature enables a driver to hold their Dodge muscle car anywhere from five to up to 10 seconds for the optimal launch with a consistently straight line dispatch. With so many features customizable, luckily this is one feature that comes standard for the 2019 Dodge Challenger.
Things To Consider When Shopping For a Challenger
The 2019 Challenger comes in seven significant trims ranging from the SXT, GT, R/T, R/T 392, SRT Hellcat and the SRT Hellcat Redeye. Only the SXT and GT have a V6 engine, but the rest gain a V8 engine. Unique styling differences and performance measures are what separate each trim and variations. The SRT Hellcat also carries a dual-snorkel feature that pushes up the horsepower to 717 horsepower, 10 more horsepower than the previous model year. The SRT Hellcat Redeye is extremely detailed and even the Hellcat logo carries a “Redeye” to showcase the tremendous attention to every feature about this fantastic muscle car.
2019 Dodge Challenger Pricing
The base model Challenger starts at $27,595 MSRP (plus destination fee), and the high-end SRT Hellcat Redeye starts at $71,250 MSRP (plus destination fee), which is $15,000 or so less than the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, despite being made of Demon parts and only slightly less powerful. Dodge has earned the reputation for crafting and engineering the fastest, most powerful Muscle cars in the world. Their most respected muscle car to date is the Dodge Challenger. The current Challenger has not received a major change to its design since 2008 (not that the Challenger needed to). Dodge has still introduced new trims and special edition Challenger cars to their line-up. Most recently, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) product did something it never has before. The future of the Dodge Challenger will only continue to improve, let us explain.
Climbing the Charts
The Detroit Free Press broke the news that the Dodge Challenger outsold the Chevrolet Camaro in the first quarter of 2019. Thanks to those newly introduced trims like the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, Dodge had 13,431 vehicles sold, placing in second only behind the Ford Mustang (16,917 units). The Camaro fell into third place with 12,083 units sold. Chevrolet even refreshed the Camaro last year, but the response was lackluster. That can’t be said for Dodge from their robust vehicles, slick advertising, and growing fan base.
Dodge Sales Reflect Growing Popularity
Dodge still pulled ahead of the Camaro selling 66,716 units, opposed to the Camaro with 50,963 units sold in 2018. The Dodge Challenger over the last four years has been a model of consistency selling annually around 65,000 vehicles. The Chevy Camaro has tailed off since 2014 and even the Ford Mustang sales have fallen in recent years since 2015. While some analysts believe drivers are now looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles. However, if that were the case dodge muscle cars would not be as successful as they have been. The power of the V8 HEMI powertrain is as attractive as it’s ever been. Dodge also has improved their infotainment system, Uconnect, Plus added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with larger touchscreens and faster response times. Combining both the incredible horsepower with updated technology has driven sales for Dodge.
Dodge Wins Over Buyers
Dodge has taken the share of buyers thanks to recent entries like the popular, limited production run of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, last year’s 2019 Challenger Hellcat Redeye and a slew of special editions. The Dodge brand across their whole line-up provides roomier interiors for daily driving and even an all-wheel-drive version to allow drivers more options. For muscle car enthusiasts, Dodge is a brand that has been around for generations. Dodge continues to push the envelope and satisfy what customers want most: excitement. Don’t worry about where to look to get a fantastic deal on a new Dodge.

Everyone knows a muscle car when they see them, and especially when they hear them. There’s a loud sound that erupts from a muscle car when the driver puts the pedal to the metal, as they say. As the number of passenger cars is disappearing in record numbers, one thing is certain, that won’t be the case for muscle cars; at least not any time soon and at least not with Dodge. Dodge has stated that they will produce their long-standing muscle cars, the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger for another half-decade.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is responsible for the Dodge brand and they did announce the end for the Dodge Dart and the Chrysler 200 passenger car. Ford has done the same with their Ford Fusion and Ford Fiesta soon to be extinct. Across the automotive industry, there have been companies pulling back on once popular car entries like the Buick LaCrosse, which General Motors Co. has discontinued. Chevrolet also has revealed the end of the Impala as sales for these vehicles have dwindled.
Why the Muscle Car Will Survive
There’s no way to know for sure, but Dodge is committed to making their muscle cars stand out and stay relevant as they have for many decades. In fact, the Dodge Challenger rose up three percent in 2018 sales over 2017 numbers. That is good news for fans of the remarkably fast muscle car produced by Dodge. Dodge knows from the top down the fascination with their high-performance vehicles.
“What’s dying is the commoditized, four-door nothingburger, no-personality cars. Muscle cars have a really well-defined personality and positioning, ” said Tim Kuniskis, who ran the Dodge brand at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV from 2013 to early 2018, before taking over Jeep North America.
The Beginning of the Sedan’s End
What has helped FCA move from the sedan market is the average price for the muscle cars they sell. At around $36,000, it helps to offset the money made by sedan cars, as of 2016 Dodge truly began to move from the sedan market. While the profit from trucks and SUVs, which are growing in popularity, the muscle car market remains steady. Another reason that Dodge and FCA have had success with their muscle cars, the Dodge Challenger has not changed its platform model since 2011 and even longer for the Dodge Charger, not since 2008. Rather than having to entirely redesign their vehicles for newer more electric-based designs, they have been able to see profits for a long time without having to redesign the wheel.
Retail sales for large passenger cars is down 21 percent across the board, according to sales set in 2018, but that hasn’t affected the large muscle cars of Dodge. Thanks to their latest series of SRT (street and racing technology vehicles) like the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, which carry incredible horsepower and speed, they are beautiful, powerful and have gained the following of fans around the world for their exceptional high-performance and craftsmanship. The same can not be said about a Nissan Maxima, for example.
“There’s almost been a resurgence with some of the younger (people), even kids that aren’t of driving age that are interested in those products. Those kind of special additions and add-ons have really put some life into the vehicles,” said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting for LMC Automotive.
