The Chrysler company is giving back by expanding its union with No Kid Hungry, a national campaign that is dedicated to ending child hunger in America. No Kid Hungry launched 10 years ago in 2010, and since then, it has provided more than 1 billion meals to impoverished children and helps decrease childhood hunger in America by one third. At this moment till the end of the school year, every Chrysler Pacifica that is sold will be another contribution by the popular minivan company towards No Kid Hungry, thus providing hundreds of meals to kids nationwide.

Chrysler 300 Ups Its Game With New Package Options

Fiat Chrysler aims to keep its 300 model in the limelight by providing new color, price and package options. Since sales for this Chrysler vehicle have bottomed out at 29,213 U.S. deliveries in the last year, some critics are saying that its time to put the model into retirement. In spite of this, Chrysler is sending a message that there’s still some fight left in the ol’roaster and apparently thinks that its disappointing loss isn’t a good enough reason for the automaker to abolish the age-old tradition of trying to entice a few more customers with new upholstery and different badging styles; both of which will be available for purchase this year, along with the required paint updates.

Chrysler’s sedan also sees price increases nearly widespread. Some will barely notice the difference in most rear-drive trims, while all-wheel-drive models add on an additional $250-370 against last year’s pricing. 

For those looking for the biggest discounts, it may help in trying to find holdovers from the 2019 model year.

It was reported by Mopar Insiders about Chrysler’s new Sport Appearance Package, and since then, it has emerged on the brand’s website for an added $1,495. It includes the black 300S grille, 20×8-inch Black Noise Aluminum Wheels black headlamp bezels, darker badging and some black intensification on the exterior. If you don’t like black, there is a similarly priced chrome appearance package that is the polar opposite.

Furthermore, the 300 model is supposed to get a Red S Appearance Package that accessorizes with all the darkened bits from the Sport Appearance Pack (with a red insert on the Chrysler logo) and makes way for an exceptional Red Radar interior. It has not yet been established on Chrysler’s website yet, which indicates that the company may be saving it for later in the year when the rest of the new paint colors are released.

The color Frostbite, which is already offered on Dodge’s Challenger and Charger, has been included in the 300’s central lineup of colors for this year. It is an attractive, teal Sapphire type of shade, which is available now, but it doesn’t come at a premium. It will be succeeded by colors (later in availability) Amethyst and Canyon Sunset, which both aid in giving the model a paint listing that brings the nostalgia of the late 1990s. Maximum Steel and Ceramic Metallic will both be done away for this year, but you can still get the 300 in Silver Mist and Granite Crystal Metallic. According to Mopar Insiders, the new red interior will be congruent with all paint options with the exception of Frostbite and cost has an added price of $300.

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Shows Off

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica is known for being a family-friendly vehicle but it’s so much more than that, its advanced technology is also quite a show-stopper, especially when it comes to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

With most car companies, new features first are set to appear on top of the lineup in luxury vehicles but FCA rebelled against that movement by giving growing families the opportunity to use an assortment of gadgets throughout its minivan platform.

FCA previously used the Pacifica to present increased electrification effectiveness as the industry’s first plug-in hybrid minivan, while simultaneously becoming a testing area for self-driving systems with its collaboration with Waymo.

Next year’s Pacifica, expected to release in the second quarter, will be packed with driver-assist technologies and will also serve as the springboard for FCA’s 5th generation Uconnect information platform. It’s really stepped its game up in terms of safety by offering what FCA describes as an “industry-leading” 97 standard features.

FCA’s strong push for innovation in its minivan may stem from a feeling of influence that the automaker feels when it paved the way for other vehicles when it came out with the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager in the early ’80s.

“For the last 37 years, we have been innovating in that segment,” said Tim Kuniskis, FCA’s head of passenger cars, during a media preview of the Pacifica for last month’s Chicago auto show.

The company has had “116 firsts — 116 innovations — that we came up within that 37 years,” Kuniskis said, “which helped us sell 15 million minivans during that time period. We have a pretty decent idea [of] what this customer is looking for. But also, after selling 15 million, we’ve got a nice tool chest of all kinds of content to help these people make their lives easier.”

The FCA believes that with Pacifica it can draw around 700,000 people who make the switch from cars to utility vehicles last year for the “perception of more safety” that expands in size and capability

“They can make more of that segment because they know that there is not necessarily 20 competitors that they’re competing with,” Jessica Caldwell, executive director of insights for Edmunds, told Automotive News. “So if they do a really good job in execution, they could capture a bigger part of the market — and I imagine that the heritage that they have in the segment is also important to them.”

A New Type of  Convenience

Chrysler is certainly responsible for turning minivans into homes on wheels, but over time their particular division has had a regression. Contrary to this, according to Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader, their popularity could rebound as the autonomous era takes hold. “The vans are going to get more important as time goes forward and we get more and more interested in autonomous, and [there’s] more and more interest in moving people around in urban areas in comfort [with] potentially less personal car ownership,” Brauer said.

Waymo has equipped hybrid Pacificas with its autonomous-tech and released them in various programs. As an example, in Phoenix, Arizona, Waymo has been operating a shuttle service and also announced delivery programs for AutoNation and UPS.

As for the collaboration with UPS, in January, Waymo said that Pacificas will transport packages from UPS stores in the Phoenix area to a hub in Tempe.

In October, AutoNation revealed a course of action with a Toyota dealership that it runs in Tempe. An employee will be able to request a Pacifica hybrid via an app and send parts to a repair shop in the minivan.

Making Corny Cool

Brauer says that this new phase of autonomous utility will eliminate one of the drawbacks of minivans, which is the image. “The main reason they don’t sell better right now is because a lot of people don’t want to be seen as a minivan person.” said Brauer  “But if someone doesn’t own the vehicle and uses it as a tool, he said, that dynamic disappears. It “doesn’t reflect on my personal coolness factor, if that’s what you want to call it, at all to be seen in a minivan because this is just a functional way to move me around New York City.”

Brauer continued to say that Chrysler is smart to continue to invest in the segment and promote its minivans as cutting-edge vehicles that feature forward-thinking technology because they are probably going to inherit a more important role once the autonomous technology and the autonomous world arrives.

DUMPED! The FCA Ditches Its 35 Year Romance With The Dodge Caravan For The Chrysler Pacifica

Not that long after Valentine’s Day, FCA is already leaving the Dodge Caravan for another woman…I mean vehicle, specifically the Chrysler Pacifica. The van that is preferred by film crews and penny-pinching suburban moms near and far is now forced into retirement. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) recently revealed that the production of the Dodge Grand Caravan will come to a standstill in late May, which marks the end of the minivan’s 35-year run.

Sure the Caravan’s feelings might be hurt, but it should have seen it coming, as the Pacifica has all of the latest tech that one could possibly need like safety tech, fresh and modern styling, and an equally exquisite interior. Meanwhile, the Dodge was in a purgatory of sorts while its option packages were sub-par at best and its design was quite outdated.

As the years progressed, the Grand Caravan became a semblance of an old spinster nagging the grandkids to pick something up when they come back from school. When Chrysler finally dug up the Pacifica title for its minivan in 2017, slowly but surely the Caravan faded into obscurity. Not only does the Pacifica have the best tech out there and steller comfort features but its stying much more modern and exciting than the late 2000s “style” that the Dodge van has going on.

This change will also affect production at FCA’s Ontario plant in Windsor, this is the same place that the long-suffering Grand Caravan was built. An FCA spokesperson says that its decision will move the facility from a three-shift staffing structure to a two-shift schedule that is more traditional, which is estimated to affect around 1,500 employees. However, the company is working on placing the laid-off workers in other positions.

For those who are hoping to buy one of the final 2020 Grana Caravans, it won’t be easy. According to Dodge, the new van won’t be available in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington for the remainder of its production run due to emissions regulations. 

Although the Grand Caravan’s best days are behind her, to some its still a classic collector’s item that has some sort of value in its own right. Perhaps in the next 20 years or so, we can include this car on our list of best “vintage” cars from the FCA.

Chicago Auto Show Debut

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica made its debut this month at the Chicago Auto Show. The event has been held annually during the month of February for the past 118 years, its also the largest auto show in North America. This year the event was held from February 8th to 17th.

The 2021 Pacifica was added to the minivan lineup. It was the brand’s first all-wheel-drive in the minivan category since 2004 and the only rival to the all-wheel-drive Toyota Sienna. Its also been four years since Chrysler debuted the Pacifica minivan, so it’s better late than ever for this vehicle to get a fresh coat of paint.

In the front of the Pacifica, it has a new fascia with a bigger grille, headlights that are reshaped and air inlets that are more forceful. The back has also been restyled, it has a taillight that is full-width and stretches from each edge. These modifications are minimal but just enough towards keeping the 2021 minivan looking fresh without essentially changing its unique characteristics.

The Pinnacle is positioned as the most exclusive trim of the Pacifica lineup, it includes wood and piano black trim, quilted Nappa leather-upholstered seats which have a pair of lumbar pillows to match in the captain chairs of the second-row, as well as high-tech features like standard automatic emergency brakes and adaptive cruise control.

The powertrain is without a doubt the highlight of it all, as it is composed of a 3.6-liter V6 engine, 8-speed automatic transmission. The all-wheel-drive system activates in the front-wheel-drive for the majority of the time for efficiency, but when it counts, it can send up to 100 percent of the power to the rear wheels. Another tech-savvy feature includes the FamCAM, a video system that enables the driver or front passenger to over-see second-row passengers, perfect for keeping an eye on the little critters should they get too rowdy. The zoom feature also allows one to monitor infants in the rear-facing seats. Moreover, kids that are slightly older in that row will love the built-in games from the available rear entertainment system.

Fiat Chrysler Takes on Robotaxis with Tech Company AutoX

 

AutoX and FSA Partnership

Fiat Chrysler establishes yet another partnership with AutoX, a startup self-driving car technology company. AutoX, which is backed by the multinational conglomerate company Alibaba, plans on rolling out a number of autonomous taxis in China and other countries in Asia.

According to AutoX, a slew of Chrysler Pacifica vans be utilized as part of a service to the public in China early this year. Passengers will be able to make use of a mini-program called WeChat and other apps in China that give them the ability to summon his or her robotaxi to take them to his or her desired destination.

AutoX is currently based in Hong Kong as well as San Jose, California; Public rides were offered in downtown Shenzhen by early 2019. Additionally, AutoX formed a partnership with Shanghai to launch 100 of its robotaxis in order to pilot a number of vehicles there.

According to  Jianxiong Xiao, CEO of AutoX, the next challenge is to remove the safety driver and go truly driverless. “Getting hardware ready is a crucial step towards this goal,” he said. The partnership with FCA will help it get there, according to the company.

“Achieving completely driverless operation needs a very reliable vehicle platform with full redundancy of the vehicle’s drive-by-wire system,” said Xiao. “This level of redundancy is still new and rare in the auto industry. The Chrysler Pacifica platform has proven trustworthy for driverless deployment.”

Sometime this year, AutoX will showcase the Chrysler Pacifica minivan at the CES (Consumer Technology Association). This new autonomous vehicle has state of the art features such as solid-state lidar sensors, a number of high-definition cameras, blind-spot and lidar sensors. Another dynamic feature included in the self-driving Pacifica is a vehicle control unit, the XCU. This technological component powers and integrates the self-driving stack, including lidar and radar sensors, into the vehicle. The streets can look completely different in the morning, afternoon, and at night. This requires our system to process faster and extremely accurate to recognize and track each object to guarantee safety.”

Fiat Chrysler May Get A New Name For The New Year

Towards the end of last year in 2019, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles merged with french auto company PSA Group in order to become a global powerhouse, thus becoming the fourth-largest automaker company with a combined market value of roughly $50 billion. This year, according to Mopar Insiders, Chrysler’s brand is making even more headway by deciding to remove its famous name…well, at least thinking about it. Other brands owned by FSA such as Dodge, Jeep, and Ram have and continued to bring in the most profit for the company, but due to Chrysler’s small lineup its cars don’t always get much traction, so it might not be that surprising for a rebrand of sorts on the name.

Typically when two companies merge, they also agree on a new name as a way to identify themselves as one new organization. For nearly 100 years, Chrysler has gone through several name changes such as the Chrysler Corporation, Chrysler LLC, DaimlerChrysler, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. It’s been reported that with the new merge between FCA and PSA, the two companies have agreed not to use either of their existing names. This marks the first time in Chrysler’s history in which the name may not be used outside of the company’s brand. 

A statement was made by Walter P. Chrysler’s great-grandson, Frank Rhodes to Mopar Insiders about the matter, “It has been a long time coming. That being said, we need to preserve the brand and at least it looks safe for now. Carlos Tavares, CEO PSA, said he would keep all of the brands,” Rhodes said. “Chrysler should expand and go after Lincoln. I did think of a corporate name, PFC Corporation. However, I heard that none of the existing corporate names will be used. The fact is that Tavares has the leading vote, 6-5, and however you slice the cake, he and the French Government are in control. Remember how Chrysler and Mercedes had a ‘merger of equals?'”

Despite the possibility that Chrysler’s name may be no more, this does not mean that the brand itself is going extinct. Merges and partnerships with the FSA haven’t always worked out for the best; On the contrary, this latest deal should aid in speeding up product cycles and have a greater overall structure between these core brands.

Fiat Chrysler Goes Green-With The Responsible Sourcing Blockchain Network

Tuesday, December 10, 2019,  Fiat Chrysler Automobiles revealed that it has joined the Responsible Sourcing Blockchain Network (RSBN), an industry alliance that uses blockchain technology to support ecological, responsible sourcing and production methods from mine to market. 

The RSBN is on course to become operational on a commercial standpoint by the Spring of 2020.

The ability to trace and map raw materials is vital in order to significantly reduce practices that are unethical and threaten the future for the communities in which the raw materials are sourced.

“Our commitment to the responsible procurement of raw materials is vital to the integrity and sustainability of our supply chain, especially as our electrification strategy ramps up,” said Carl Smiley, Chief Purchasing and Supply Chain Officer, FCA. “Embarking on this journey together with technology and industry leaders will propel our ability to have visibility into artisanal and small-scale mines, allowing us to better manage the social and environmental impacts of our business.”

By 2022, the FCA plans on launching more than 30 electrified nameplates. The consortium will aid in having a responsible supply chain of cobalt, which is used in lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles. 

RSBN will build an open, industry-wide blockchain platform to trace minerals in a responsible manner from its source. The RCS Global assesses each participating entity responsible for sourcing requirements set by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and industry bodies. Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen Group, Volvo, LG Chem and Huayou Cobalt are participants in the RSBN.

“We are hugely excited that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, one of the world’s leading auto manufacturers, has joined the RSBN. With this move, FCA signals its intent to robustly address the issue of responsible sourcing in its supply chain and we look forward to working with them to achieve this,” said Dr. Nicholas Garrett, CEO, RCS Global Group. “The RSBN is expanding rapidly, connecting actors throughout the battery supply chain and beyond, all of whom have a focus on proving good practice in responsible sourcing and production.”

United Nations and OCED 5 Step Framework

To add on, efforts to become more sustainable align with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which seek to tackle global issues, specifically those dealing with poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.

The OECD 5-Step Framework for Upstream and Downstream Supply Chains is also used and taught to suppliers. This framework gives a common and foundational tool in order to aid in solidifying responsible sourcing practices and decisions made throughout the supply chain. Suppliers and their sub-suppliers are required by Chrysler to abide by applicable global laws and regulations.

2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

Speaking of Eco-friendly, Chrysler has an ecological vehicle that is both family-friendly and inexpensive, the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. This plug-in hybrid goes has 33 miles of range paired with a standard V6 engine. It also has advanced safety features such as the blind-spot monitoring for its base models and many more for its advanced models.

This 2019 model has six trims. The L base includes a version of Chrysler’s Uconnect touch-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

All models come with the SafetyTec Group. This includes blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors.

MLAM Fiat Chrysler Makes Merging Moves With French Automaker

Fiat Chrysler’s Big Move

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is moving forward with its merger with French auto company PSA Group. According to an internal document detailed by the Wall Street Journal, about 50 people are working to finalize a 50/50 deal.

Despite dealing with a federal racketeering lawsuit filed by competitor General Motors, the FCA and PSA Group (which makes Peugeot) are still continuing with the merger.

In a joint statement, the boards of Fiat Chrysler, Peugeot, and PSA agreed towards a binding agreement in the coming weeks. The reason behind this is that the agreement would create the fourth-largest automaker with a combined market value of about $50 billion.

This merge would create a regional force to be reckoned with, challenging Volkswagen AG. The collaboration would bring together the Italian billionaire Agnelli family and the French Peugeot family as the act of merging sweeps through an industry trying to finance major transformation.

Last week in a message obtained by The Journal, FCA and PSA Group informed their employees that the two sides were working toward a  memorandum of understanding. The message defined a memorandum of understanding as “the formal document that signals the willingness of both companies to work together to create a 50/50 merger.”

Doug Ostermann, FCA executive, and Oliver Bourges, PSA executive are leading the respective negotiating teams. The deal is expected to be settled by the end of 2020.

According to The Journal, a daily newspaper in West Virginia, Unions representing PSA employees have signaled support for the deal.

Current Obstacles

Saturday, The United Auto Workers and FCA reached an unsettled agreement on a new four-year contract, which includes a total of $9 billion in investments but still needs final consent from workers.

Due to a matter which started at FCA, involving bribery and embezzlement, an ongoing investigation might leave the merge somewhat affected. Many workers at the company have become quite cynical due to the union’s leadership since the scandal became public in 2017.

Union President Gary Jones, whose home was raided by federal agents, resigned in November, leaving Vice President Roby Gamble in charge.

According to a union spokesperson, on a unanimous decision, Gamble was confirmed by the UAW’s International Executive Board. Prior to this, Gamble spent 12 years as regional director at the union before being elected to vice president. Additionally, he was commissioned to lead the union’s Ford Department just last year. 

Upon recent weeks, Gamble has vowed to move swiftly in order to restore credibility to the union, which represents more than 400,000 members. He plans on doing this by implementing ethics and other reforms. “It was an honor to complete my career and serve the members in this great union,” said Gamble. He also made reference to the difficult circumstances that led to his appointment.

It worth noting that Jones has not been charged.

New Pacifica

The 2020 new Chrysler Pacifica Red S Edition interior has a burst of color and freshness. There are premium Nappa leather two-toned seats in Rodeo Red, only in the deluxe Red S interior, it’s also highlighted in Light Diesel Grey stitching and piping, with an “S” logo on the seatbacks.
