Chrysler Files To Trademark Its Airflow Concept

The Chrysler Airflow concept has been the focal point of a recent application for patent filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), however, it’s still not clear if the car company is considering a production version.

It was Jan 3rd, 2020, when the application was filed and then published on May 3, 2022, covering the ornamental design for an automobile,” and involves images of the Airflow electric SUV concept that has already been shown publicly, twice within the past few months.

The concept, which gets its moniker from Chrysler’s inventive aerodynamic models from the 1930s, was originally shown at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. The lustrous crossover has an electric motor (worth 201 horsepower) that activates each axle and supposedly has a range between 350 miles and 400 miles.

Outside of the powertrain, the Airflow may also have new connectivity features that we should potentially see in Chrysler vehicles sooner rather than later. These features include an operating system dubbed the STLA Brain, which will make way for over-the-air updates.

The Airflow concept also acted as a showcase for Stellantis, Chrysler’s parent company’s new electrical architecture (STLA Brain), infotainment system (STLA SmartCockpit), and driver-assist technology (STLA AutoDrive).

The second version was introduced in April of this year at the New York auto show. Named Airflow Graphite, its changes were mainly cosmetic. Chrysler chooses to implement a new black exterior and Gray interior, with divergent copper accents from the inside-out. The company also expressed during this time that the Airflow was made in a way in which more powerful motors could be outfitted, perhaps for a performance version.

On top of this, the Airflow Graphite features a new Galaxy Black exterior with a Cyprus Copper interior. Accents on the outer body accentuate the sleekness and refined aura of this darkened concept. It was derived from the idea of sophistication and an urban feel, making one feel, “at home navigating amid big city skylines” as said by the parent company’s media site, Stellantis Media.

Chrysler has remained hush-hush regarding its plans for a production version of its Airflow concept. Seeing that the application for the patent was filed two years ago, Chrysler was likely trying to protect the design to use on concept models. The automaker confirmed that it will release its first production EV in 2025, and will only sell electric vehicles in 2028. Those electrics will be derived from four modular platforms from Stellantis, which were revealed in July 2021 of last year.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica: All The Latest

Chrysler’s upscale minivan is back at it again for the 2022 model year, and this time around it’s bringing along new in-car technologies, like a standard fitted air filter and optional Amazon Fire TV. The exterior palette also welcomes Silver Mist for its color selection.

The newest Pacifica is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine, which produces a healthy output of 287 horsepower with 262 lb-ft of torque. It’s connected to a 9-speed automatic transmission, which allows for a respectable highway fuel economy of 28 mpg (FWD) and  25 mpg (AWD).

Front-wheel-drive (FWD) serves as the standard transmission, while AWD is standard on the top two trims but also optional on the Touring and Touring L. There is also a fuel-saving stop/start system that activates while the car is either parked or at a stoplight, however, this can be turned off for those who find the constant restarts quite maddening.

Driving and Handling

It’s easy to get yourself comfortable inside of the 2022 Pacifica, particularly due to its ability to block out road noise, stability and easy handling, and excellent outward vision. Buyers often comment on its raised seating position, which also increases the overall feeling of control and visibility.
On higher trims, parking is made easier, as it offers distance sensors at both ends and a 360-degree camera system.

There’s even a self-parking feature for parallel and perpendicular spaces. For all that, the base model is still packed with safety features, which Chrysler is known for when it comes to the minivan segment.

Exterior Features

Chrysler didn’t wander too far off its design from the 2021 model year, specifically with its sleek and contoured body. For those who prioritize style, try opting for the highest-ranking Pinnacle, as it has available 20-inch alloy wheels, while the inside flaunts quilted Nappa leather upholstery and lumbar pillows for the second row.

Buyers have the opportunity to choose between Bright White Clearcoat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearlcoat, Ceramic Gray Clearcoat, Fathom Blue Pearlcoat, Granite Crystal Metallic Clearcoat, Velvet Red Pearlcoat, and the new Silver Mist Clearcoat for their color selection.

Interior Features

The 2022 Pacifica can accommodate eight passengers (seven for AWD models) and has more than enough room for your long-legged buddies in the third row. The Pinnacle, however,  has seven seats due to the set of captain’s chairs in the second row.

The seats are comfortable and snug and the available FamCam interior camera allows parents to keep an eye on their little ones. There’s even a standard “conversation mirror” included with the rearview mirror.

The luggage area is already spacious with 32.3 cubic feet of room, only to expand even more to a maximum of 140.5 when the second and third-row seats are down.

Standards base Pacifica Touring involve keyless entry/ignition, remote start, tri-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, active noise cancellation, stowable seats in the second and third rows, and a self-dimming mirror with a remote garage door opener.

The automaker puts an emphasis on safety, as it has an extensive range of technologies meant for your welfare and the welfare of your passengers. Technologies encompass forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, rain-sensing wipers, hill-start assist, and automatic high beams, together with an abundance of airbags.

Entertainment-centered gadgets include a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with a 6-speaker audio setup. This system also has wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, Amazon Alexa compatibility, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and satellite radio.

It’s encouraged that buyers to at least upgrade to the Touring L, since this vehicle adds on perforated leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, heated/leather-wrapped steering wheel, sunshades for the back two rows, an augmented center console with illuminated cup holders, and a self-parking function.

The Pacifica Limited comes with a 3-pane panoramic sunroof, hands-free sliding side door and tailgate operation, Nappa leather seating surfaces, 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, heated/ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, wireless charging, navigation, wireless smartphone integration, and a vacuum cleaner.

Finally, Pinnacle trim adds on quilted Nappa leather upholstery and lumbar pillows for the second row, as well as an interior cabin camera, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
