Chrysler Pacifica VS Toyota Sienna – War of The Minivans?

The Pacifica and Sienna minivan models are the latest minivans out for Chrysler and Toyota in the market at the moment. You may be wondering “what can the Pacifica and Sienna offer me?”. Let’s take a look at what both minivans offer.

Chrysler Pacifica: The 2018 Pacifica seats seven passengers. It includes a feature that allows the second-row seats tilt out of the way to get to the third row without having to remove a car seat. Speaking of seating, the Pacifica also features Stow ‘n Go seating which allows for the second and third-row seats to fold into the floor. Some optional features include leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. If you live up north you won’t have to worry about freezing because the Pacifica has heated everything. Heated front seats, heated second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Toyota Sienna: The 2018 Sienna also seats seven passengers. The Sienna also has three rows which, if adjusted appropriately, you can comfortably fit adults in the first two rows and slightly shorter, limber adults in the third row, too. Another interesting feature is you can push and hold a button at the top of the liftgate to make the third-row seats fold away.

Chrysler Pacifica: Entertainment is vital when you have a long trip ahead of you and have children that need to be entertained. But not to worry. The Chrysler Pacifica has backseat entertainment and its appropriately named the Uconnect infotainment system. For quick use, it has physical buttons and knobs on every 4th Generation Pacifica and a new 4G LTE connection.

Toyota Sienna: The Toyota Sienna is not staying behind in the technology department. Toyota has completely revamped its Entune infotainment system. It has more USB ports and a brand new 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. However, it doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Chrysler Pacifica: Let’s face it when you’re a driver your top concern is always getting to your destination safely. It’s a relief to see that the Pacifica earned a perfect crash-test score (again) in 2018. The crash-test isn’t the only feature where it scored high. In 2018 Chrysler also moved blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors with rear automated emergency braking from being optional to being standard.

Toyota Sienna: The Sienna now has standard equipment which includes the Toyota Safety Sense P, a forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beams, and adaptive cruise control.

Chrysler Pacifica: With the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, the Chrysler Pacifica delivers 287 horsepower and has a 262 lb-ft of torque. It also has one of the Best-in-Class towing capability and delivers 28 mpg highway.

Toyota Sienna: Toyota Sienna also has a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine and delivers 296 horsepower (slightly higher than the Pacifica) and it has a 263 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy of the Sienna is 22 MPG combined city/ highway.

Chrysler Pacifica: Most minivans aren’t known to have dynamic handling and this is where the Pacifica steps in. A huge thanks to that is in part to the responsive steering and strong brakes, it remains composed around corners and on winding roads.

Toyota Sienna: Toyota Sienna has a heavier steering wheel. It trades some ride smoothness for quality handling responses. The Sienna also has a tighter turning circle: 37.5 feet.

Chrysler Pacifica: The 2018 Pacifica starts at $26,995 (plus destination fee). It includes a piece of standard equipment, such as a 7- inch in-dash touchscreen; Bluetooth connectivity; a blind-spot monitoring system with a rear cross-traffic alert; and as an added bonus it has a dual-zone manual climate control system.

Toyota Sienna: The 2018 Sienna has a starting price of $30,850 (plus destination fee). It also includes Bluetooth and a 7- inch touchscreen. Toyota also has three-zone automatic climate control and the aforementioned advanced safety features: a forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, radar cruise control; and a lane-departure warning with automatic steering assistance.

Chrysler Portal Rumored for 2020 Production Start

When the Chrysler Portal was first shown off during the 2017 North American International Auto Show, the automotive community may have thought the self-driving concept would present itself to consumers in the distant future. Reports are suggesting, however, that the automotive world may be seeing the Chrysler Portal EV entering production as early as 2020.

A Portal to the Future

The 2017 unveiling of the Chrysler Portal EV minivan indicated that Chrysler’s future may lie heavily in autonomous driving. This year we’ve already seen the Chrysler Pacifica launch with Waymo to create the world’s first autonomous ride-hailing service. And while Chrysler does not currently have a self-driving system of its own, the partnership with Waymo will certainly assist in Chrysler’s autonomous efforts. Of course, automotive makers still have a fair amount of research to conduct before a fully autonomous vehicle can enter production. The concept itself is said to have Level 3 self-driving capabilities, meaning that the car can drive itself in suitable conditions for a limited amount of time. Still, this would put Chrysler in an exclusive category of automakers when it comes to offering certain technologies to consumers.

By Millennials, For Millennials

During the design phase, the designers of the Chrysler Portal had specifically asked what millennials look for in a vehicle. They wanted to market the Portal as a vehicle for millennials, by millennials. And with its ultra-modern design and standout features, it certainly screams “the future”. One of these features being a fold-away steering wheel, gives drivers the option to stow it away while the self-driving system is in use. In the 1980s, Chrysler was one of the first automakers to introduce sliding doors on their minivan and history is repeating itself, as the Portal concept also boasts a pair of sliding doors – one for the front row and one for the back row. Additionally, the Portal will carry a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack capable of a 250-mile range and an electric motor driving the front wheels.

There has been a bit of speculation surrounding where the Portal will be built. There was talk in 2018 that may have hinted at the Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, however that has not been confirmed. And wIth Chrysler’s new Jeep plant that will be opening in Detroit, there’s no telling where the Chrysler concept will call home. Either way, if Chrysler is able to create the necessary components and technologies during the next couple of years, then consumers may get a glimpse of the future a little sooner than they thought.
