The Late Automotive Giant – Sergio Marchionne

Before Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) became the automotive group it is today, both Fiat and Chrysler were saved by the former CEO Sergio Marchionne. Having stepped down due to illness, Marchionne passed away July 25, 2018. He was born in Italy, and migrated to Toronto, Canada at age thirteen to pursue a higher education. By the time Marchionne graduated grad school, he held a Master’s degree in business administration and law, and then entered the world of accounting. He quickly became recognized as an accountant, tax specialist, attorney, and business strategist as he worked up the ladder in multiple companies before taking his talent to the automotive industry.

The Fiat Group quickly realized the good Marchionne could do for the company when he restructured their debt, settled contractual obligations to General Motors with a $2 billion payment, and drew up a four-year plan to make 20 new models to expand the product line for Fiat. Marchionne was quickly appointed as CEO in 2004, and following this, helped to save the Detroit automotive company, Chrysler Group LLC, out of bankruptcy by purchasing 20-percent of the company in 2009. He was also appointed as the CEO of Chrysler around the same time.

Finally! Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Unveils Their EV Plans

maserati blue miami lakes chrysler

Dear Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, we were wondering when you were going to join the Electric Vehicle (EV) club – happy you could make it! Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne, has drawn out a five-year plan to his investors in Italy before making his exit in April 2019. After hinting here and there about his potential plans, Marchionne has finally revealed his secret – “we’re going after Tesla”, says Fiat-Chrysler with their new EV plan.

Disclaimer: FCA had zero intention of going electric – this was forced. If it wasn’t for the very profitable Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids partnership with Alphabet Inc. Waymo’s Autonomous Vehicles (AV) equipment, FCA would have nothing to offer those consumers interested in some kind of in-the-future development.

Yet, why now? Sergio Marchionne has never been known to be a huge fan of electric cars. “I’ll give you a couple of broad sort of indications of where we are today in terms of the delineation of the post 2018 FCA. The first one and I’ve mentioned this in passing and other occasions about the fact that there’s nothing that will prevent an OEM from engaging in the type of development work that Tesla has done so far. We have been – as you well know, we have been reluctant to embrace that avenue until we saw a clear – a path forward. I think we’re now in a position to acknowledge at least one of our brands and in particular Maserati will, when it completes the development of its next two models effectively switch all of its portfolio to electrification” says Marchionne.

Meanwhile, Chairman and CEO of General Motors (GM), Mary Barra, embraced the EV revolution and even tossed in autonomous cars just to seal the deal. After filing papers with the US Department of Transportation, Barra plans on beginning manufacturing next year on the first ever all-electric fully-autonomous Level 5 car in the world. Clearly, GM has a goal as they go electric. However, the “regulation oriented” FCA plan will require a specific emission for specified regions. Which basically means, companies will only receive what’s exactly needed from parts to electrics and nothing more.

Today, in order to meet regulations, each of the FCAs global markets receive a combination of gas, various hybrids, and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) will utilize the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid’s technology when transitioning Jeep, Ram, Maserati, and Fiat vehicles into the alternative variant. Recently, about 60,000 additional Pacifica Hybrid units were ordered by Alphabet Inc. Waymo is also working to transfer the Autonomous Vehicle (AV) technology into an FCA passenger vehicle for consumer use. Let’s be real, FCA clearly got irritated at the fact that Maserati, a luxury vehicle, was losing so much money to Tesla, a luxury electric vehicle.

“Everything gets electrified. Look at our product portfolio and you see we’re going after Tesla”, says Tim Kuniskis, Head of alfa Romeo and Maserati, to NBC News. “FCA’s electrified luxury models will “have a performance advantage,” said Kuniskis. “At the bottom rung you have models equipped with low-performance four-cylinder engines, then moving up to higher and higher-power sixes, eights, and twin-turbo eights. The electric models will be at the top of that ladder, where I’m going to give you more horsepower and quicker 0 to 60 times,” the FCA executive boasted.

By 2022, Maserati’s all-new “Maserati Blue” Program will electrify four cars. including the all-new Quattroporte and Levante, plus the Alfieri and Alfieri Cabrio. The first to arrive, in 2020, will be the Maserati Alfieri and will be available in both coupe and convertible models. The all-new Quattroporte will follow in 2022 – both the Quattroporte and Levate will receive PHEV variants as well.

Now, for the main event – the strategy. So, we already know that Marchionne is putting together a five-year plan. Costing about $10.5 billion, this EV development will run through 2022. By 2021, Jeep will have 14 electrified vehicles, four BEVs, and every Jeep model will have some kind of electrified option. Fiat will also expand on their 500e by 2020. As a regulatory-based execution; the strategy, however, is performance based. After watching the success of the SRT program, FCA plans to make their electric program performance-oriented as well.

As previously mentioned, we’re happy to see that FCA finally joined the EV party. Hopefully, these next five years prove to be profitable and productive. FCA Develops New Aluminum Alloys for Turbo Engines

Watch for an all-new turbocharged four-cylinder engine the next time you go shopping for a Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) vehicle. “Why” you ask? As of July 2nd, FCA has announced its partnership with lightweight Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts supplier Nemak and Tennessee’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory surrounding their development of a new aluminum alloy for turbocharged engines.

Due to a major challenge the FCA Group has faced is cylinder heads breaking from the intense heat generated during an engine’s combustion cycle, especially when faced with higher compression ratios and increased pressure that creates more power, efficiency, and heat! Today many aluminum heads are created from aluminum alloy 319 or 356 that becomes increasingly delicate once their temperatures reach above 200 degrees Celsius (392℉). This new alloy creation, from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and casting supplier Nemak, referred to as either 16HT or ACMZ, can sustain temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius (572 ℉). Silicon found in some aluminum alloys will be replaced with copper – a combination that has been surprisingly successful, because of the previously high potential for copper to crack after the casting is applied.

“When we focused on copper, other people in the industry almost laughed us off, saying we’d never be able to cast that…We knew there was competition, including other teams working at Oak Ridge National Labs, but we outperformed everyone on this.”  – Gregg Black, senior manager of advanced powertrain engineering at FCA, in a company blog post.

In order to produce simulations for the metal cooling process, Oak Ridge National Laboratory volunteered their Titan supercomputer – ranked as the third most-powerful supercomputer in the US and seventh in the world. After testing more than 100 cylinder heads with identical structures to those of the FCA Group offerings, Nemak and FCA were able to narrow down the new alloy recipes down to just seven options. Engineers could now be allowed to modernize the cylinder head designs, due to the 16HT/ACMZ alloys, by narrowing the “bridge” areas between the valves. These include the areas of metal between the valves, the spark plug, and direct fuel injector. By narrowing the bridges, the larger valves are given more room which allows the engineers to have the flexibility, balance of performance, and efficiency while modifying an engine.

However, everything comes at a price. According to FCA, these all-new aluminum heads are estimated to cost just 7 percent more than the 319/356 aluminum heads. Additionally, its production does not require new manufacturing techniques, which saves extra steps in the post-casting heat treatment. Unfortunately, consumers still have a few years before a 16HT/ACMZ aluminum head makes its much anticipated debut.

“We just getting started on the process to create a design now that we have a material that will work…We feel like we really have a tiger by the tail.  –  Black.

Miami Lakes Automall FCA Summer Edition Campaign

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Apple Make Sweet Music

Miami Lakes Automall FCA Summer Edition Campaign

Ya’ll ready for some summer love? Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has started its 2018 Edition of FCA’s summer advertising campaign. With a focus on several FCA brands, Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge, Ram, and FIAT, commercials will be airing on various media channels, digital and TV, to promote these brands and select vehicles. In partnership with the technological giant Apple, FCA and Apple will be working together to also promote Apple CarPlay and the “Apple Experience” with the summer advertising campaign, set to feature ten music artists across multiple labels, including a Jeep brand collaboration with multi platinum, Grammy®-nominated band OneRepublic (Interscope Records) to launch the sixth Summer of Jeep campaign.

“FCA offers an incredible Apple experience, giving consumers the ability to enjoy Apple Music’s catalog of 45 million songs and to listen with premium BeatsAudio sound, in addition to all the features that come with CarPlay. This collaboration inspired us to leverage the strength and identity of each of our individual brands…Additionally, as the only automaker to now offer branded playlists on Apple Music, this allows us to provide increased relevance to targeted audiences.” – said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, FCA.

The “Apple Experience” is an offer the FCA started in June 2018 that would give new consumers a chance to get Apple Music for free. Customers in the U.S. and Canada would get six months of Apple Music free if they were new Apple Music users and three months free if they were existing customers with the purchase of any new Chrysler, Dodge, FIAT, Jeep or Ram vehicle with standard Apple CarPlay support. It should go without saying that all of these ads will be showing off Apple CarPlay functionality, although Google Android Auto will most likely also be standard if Apple CarPlay is.

Of the ten music artists being featured, those who have music featured in the commercials are OneRepublic, Alice Cooper, Brothers Osborne, Dej Loaf & Leon, and Nicky Blitz. Other music artists, such as Sofia Reyes, Dave Cobb, Gus Wenner, and Kathryn Hahn also worked together with the above artists to make curated playlists for the Summer of Jeep campaign, now available on Apple Music. The main focus for FCA though, is OneRepublic with Interscope Records.

“With this new campaign, Interscope continues our relationship with the FCA-crafting campaigns that speak to the power of music…Our diverse roster and FCA’s respect for the magic of artistry and the creative process are evident in the new Summer of Jeep spot featuring OneRepublic.” – said Steve Berman, Vice Chairman Interscope Geffen A&M Records.

You can watch some of the videos for the Summer of Jeep campaign below.

Playing in the background of the Jeep Brand commercial, “Sold Out”, is the new single from OneRepublic, “Connection”. Featured in this commercial is the redesigned Jeep Cherokee and the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL.

“Under My Wheels” by Alice Cooper will be playing behind the Dodge brand commercial,”The Rider”. With a taste for high-octane speed, the Dodge Durango SRT is featured in this commercial.

The Brothers Osborne and their new track “While You Still Can” plays in the background of the “Support the Port” commercial, showing off how the Ram 1500 helps the brothers in their project to renovate the Historic Theatre in Port Saint Joe, Florida.
