Chrysler is Working on a Crossover

Miami Lakes Automall Chrysler Crossover

Ever since Chrysler decided to downsize, news about the company has been a little quieter than it has been in the past. The Chrysler 300 is showing its age, and yes, we’ve heard about how great the Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid are many times. What else is new? Chrysler needs to change things up. And we’re NOT talking about the Chrysler Portal concept, the “vehicle for millennials.” No, we need something new, and Chrysler has plans to tap into a new market with a crossover.

Honestly, we were wondering what took the automaker so long to think about joining in the crossover craze. Dodge has a few SUVs, and Jeep is an all-SUV or crossover lineup. But we don’t need to wonder anymore. During the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, FCA’s CEO, Sergio Marchionne, decided to tease the crowd with future FCA concepts. The big one that got people talking is none other than a crossover by Chrysler.

Chrysler has definitely pulled out all the stops when redesigning the Pacifica, and as a result, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica was awarded “Family Car of the Year” by Cars.com at the North American International Auto Show.

According to Cars.com editors, “Chrysler has a history of stuffing its minivans with innovations, and the Pacifica is no exception. It’s an achievement in practicality, from the improved Stow ‘n Go fold-flat seats to the available rear entertainment system that impresses even versus mobile devices. None of that costs you on the driving front, where the Pacifica pairs refined ride quality and quietness with a capable V-6. Following its 2017 model-year introduction, the minivan improved for 2018 thanks to newly standard safety features, a price reduction in base models and updated multimedia systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s as competitive as ever, and perhaps even more so.”

Since the Pacifica is looked at as a family hauler, safety is key. There are more than 100 standard features plus even more available features like a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision alert. The first year the Pacifica was available, the Chrysler Pacifica was recognized as the first minivan to win Cars.com “Best of” award. According to the Cars.com experts, in order to determine the award winners, experts take three key criteria for every car that’s tested – quality, innovations and value. These are assets that experts consider for a well-rounded, award-worthy vehicle.

The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica is the best minivan for a number of different reasons, and the four that stand out the most are functionality, versatility, technology and bold styling. While offering over 100 available safety and security features, the Chrysler Pacifica was also given a full-body facelift including an all-new platform that delivers exceptional powertrains and fuel efficiency.  Furthermore, the Chrysler Pacifica offers an abundance of comfort and convenience features like the Uconnect Theater rear-seat entertainment system. If all these amazing features weren’t enough, the Chrysler brand decided to kick things up a notch by adding the Pacifica Hybrid to the lineup. This Pacifica Hybrid’s advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain can achieve 84 miles per gallon equivalent while running on electric-only and 33 miles running solely on electric range.

“For 35 years, our Chrysler minivans have led the segment we created, and that continues in 2018 with the Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid now adding 4G LTE Wi-Fi with unlimited data plans for $20 per month,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and Fiat, FCA – North America. “The Pacifica’s new, faster 4G LTE network speed creates an in-vehicle Wi-Fi Hotspot that keeps everyone in the family connected with up to eight mobile devices, making it easy to browse websites, check email and stream video. Passengers can also make the most of the class-exclusive Uconnect Theater system by utilizing the 4G hotspot to stream content via HDMI connected devices such as Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast or Apple TV.”

The Chrysler brand has made some additional adjustments to the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica lineup. For starters, Chrysler introduced the more affordable Chrysler Pacifica L as well as a new Hybrid trim, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Touring Plus. To make things easier for consumers, Chrysler renamed the hybrid trims to the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Touring L and Chrysler Pacifica Limited and Hybrid Touring Plus. For the 2018 model year, the Chrysler Pacifica is available with the S Appearance Package that offers a customized, athletic look that includes black accents inside and out.

Big Cost Savings with the Pacifica Hybrid

When it comes to a family-friendly, budget-friendly and eco-friendly minivan, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is perfect choice that hits all the right notes. It was the Highest Ranked Minivan in the 2017 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study and its earned a number of other accolades since its release in 2017. It is also a seven-passenger vehicle that offers exceptional savings while lowering fuel costs due to its electric-only option.

Fuel Cost Savings

Drivers of the Chrysler Pacifica will definitely see savings in fuel costs in comparison to any other minivan on the market.

Electric and Hybrid Fuel Economy

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the most fuel efficient minivan on the market, so it is the most affordable when it comes to fuel costs. The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid can be driven on pure electricity for up to 33 miles (that also means it releases zero tailpipe emissions for all 33 miles) and it has a combined city/highway hybrid fuel economy of 84 MPGe.

Gas Fuel Economy

Even when the Pacifica Hybrid is only powered by its internal combustion engine, it has a combined city/highway fuel economy of 32 MPG, which is great in comparison to all other minivans on the market. In fact, the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna have a combined city/highway fuel economy of 22 MPG and the Kia Sedona and Dodge Grand Caravan have a combined city/highway fuel economy of 20 MPG, so the Pacifica Hybrid offers drivers a better combined city/highway fuel economy by 10-12 MPG in comparison to other minivan options, and that’s a pretty significant difference.

Fuel Costs

The fuel savings are best understood when it comes down to money. According to fueleconomy.gov, the average driver will spend about $950 in fuel costs per year driving the Pacifica Hybrid, and that’s $750 less than the annual fuel cost of the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna and $950 less than the annual fuel cost of the Kia Sedona and Dodge Grand Caravan.

The annual savings in fuel costs add up. Fueleconomy.gov estimates that drivers of the Pacifica Hybrid is save about $2,250 in fuel costs in five years in comparison to the average vehicle, and drivers all of the other minivan options spend $1,500 more in fuel costs in five years in comparison to the average vehicle.

Federal Tax Credit

Imagine receiving an income tax credit by just purchasing or leasing a car – too good to be true? Not with the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. In addition to the savings in fuel costs that drivers can expect, the Pacifica Hybrid also qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit. That means taxpayers that owe federal taxes during the year they purchased the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid will have a credit of up to $7,500. In addition to the federal tax credit, many states and local government also offer financial incentives like tax breaks or tax credits to residents who purchase a vehicle that has an alternative fuel powertrain like the Pacifica Hybrid.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction

Finally, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a great vehicle option because it emits fewer emissions than any other available minivan. When the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is operated only by its battery, the Pacifica Hybrid emits zero emissions. So if a driver didn’t have a long commute and could charge up the battery every 33 miles, the Pacifica Hybrid would never release tailpipe emissions just like an EV.

Even when the Pacifica Hybrid uses its gas engine in hybrid mode, the vehicle reduces significantly less emissions than the other minivans. According to fueleconomy.gov, the Chrysler Pacifica emits an average of 106 grams of tailpipe emissions per  mile and all of the other minivans emit more than 400 grams per mile.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Makes Wards 10 Best Engines List

2018 chrysler pacifica hybrid miami lakes automall

“We knew this was a special project when we were asked to develop the most fuel-efficient minivan ever,” says Bob Lee, Head of Engine Powertrain and Electrified Propulsion Systems Engineering – FCA North America. “Receiving this award, especially for the second time, validated our early conviction – as do reports from our customers.”

The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid has been named on the Wards 10 Best Engines for the second year in a row. The 3.6-liter Pentastar eHybrid powertrain is considered by the editors at WardsAuto the most efficient and adds to an already significantly long list of achievements that Chrysler has won thus far.

Thanks to the Hybrids propulsion system, which combines the dual eFlite motor Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) with a specifically adapted version of the 3.6-liter Pentastar engine, the Pacifica Hybrid was given a rating of 84 miles-per-gallon-equivalent (MPGe) combined in city and highway testing. Exceling on two other efficiency fronts, the 2018 Pacifica Hybrid has an EPA driving-range rating of 33 miles in electric mode and 570 in total miles.

The innovation of the Pacifica’s eFlite electrical variable transmission was developed by a team of in-house engineers. The EVT has the ability to retain the functionality that customers expect from minivans during a high-efficiency driving experience. Using a conventional electrification scheme, one motor is used to serve as a generator and a larger second motor is used to deliver power to the wheels. By using a one-way clutch, the eFlite’s gearbox enables the motor that is usually used only as a generator and depending on weather conditions, it delivers power to the wheels.

“The Pacifica Hybrid is a big, seven-passenger plug-in hybrid minivan with all the bells and whistles families have come to adore, but with 33 miles of full electric range and levels of fuel efficiency unimaginable just a few short years ago,” says the Senior Content Director of WardsAuto. “With most owners using their minivans to run errands and occasionally take a long-distance drive, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a stroke of genius” says, Judge Drew Winter.

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid electric lifeline is the 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. As the battery life begins to deplete, the Pacifica Hybrid turns into a part-time electric vehicle and partially runs on the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 engine in order to increase energy and efficiency. The Pacifica Hybrid’s battery has the ability to recharge in as little as two hours when the 240-volt charger is used.
