Chevrolet Announces the Return of the Trailblazer

The Chevy Blazer may have just been rebooted for the 2019 model year, but Chevrolet is already thinking ahead and has announced the return of the Trailblazer to its lineup for the 2021 model year. Just like the Blazer, the TrailBlazer will make its return as a crossover as Chevrolet is keen to cater to the current automotive market’s demands. Chevrolet stated that the small CUV will occupy the lineup space between the Trax and the Equinox once it hits showrooms in early 2020. Experts expect the Trailblazer to be similar in size to the Nissan Rogue Sport, while the new Blazer will remain a five-passenger CUV slotted above the Equinox.

Back in the day, the Trailblazer used to be a body-on-frame 4×4 SUV and was originally just a trim level of the Blazer until it spun off as its own model. Although the Trailblazer was discontinued more than a decade ago, Chevrolet still offers a Colorado platform-based SUV with the same namesake in foreign markets. Chevy hasn’t provided any technical specifications as of yet, including the kind of drivetrain the Trailblazer is destined to have.

Here’s what we do know so far: the Trailblazer will come standard with advanced safety features such as lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. There will also be a sporty RS trim available that’ll include unique styling and a two-tone paint job. Chevrolet did not disclose if the RS trim will also feature any performance upgrades, but it’s unlikely that it’ll only sport the RS badge without some performance perks.

Steve Majoros, director of Chevrolet passenger car and crossover marketing, said “The Trailblazer’s great design enables more personalization. Trailblazer is a continuation of the design language for Chevy’s crossover family and extends our momentum into one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments.”

Since the Trailblazer is expected to slot between the Equinox and the Trax, experts believe that it’ll likely offer buyers a choice between Chevy’s 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or the 2.0-liter turbo-four. Both engines are likely candidates for the new Trailblazer that’s sure to be offered with both a front-wheel-drive or an all-wheel-drive option. Others believe that at the very least the base trim of the upcoming Trailblazer could be powered by the same engine that’s under the hood of the Trax – a 1.4-liter turbo four-pot. The company’s nine-speed automatic transmission is expected to be used as well.

Chevrolet will announce pricing and full information closer to the Trailblazer’s on-sale date. Expect the Trailblazer to arrive in dealers early 2020 for the 2021 model year. Follow Miami Lakes Chevy on social media to stay up to date on the latest Chevy news.

10 Things to Like From the Chevrolet Blazer

2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer revives a name from the past and applies it to a modern crossover of the present. The new Blazer isn’t the rugged, go-anywhere model some off-road fans hoped it would be. What the resurrected Blazer does is go from a practical, family-friendly sports sedan to an equally capable, sporty SUV.

The Blazer appeals to SUV shoppers who value performance and technology over an all-terrain prowess. Available with a four-cylinder or optional V-6 engine, the acceleration is rapid with either engine. The ride and handling are more than a match for rivals of the like such as Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda Passport, and Nissan Murano.

Things To Like

  1. It’s the Camaro of Crossovers

You don’t have to be a muscle car fan to see that the Blazer has similarities with the Chevrolet Camaro and it got transplanted to a mid-size two-row SUV. The Blazer is undeniably brash and bold; it even has a more hostile exterior style. “An RS trim in bright red is without a doubt the sportiest looking crossover SUV in the class,” says Bragman. “While other competitors go for the rugged off-roader look, the Blazer makes no apologies about being an on-road warrior.”

  1. Performance and Power

The Blazer has the entry-level 2.5-liter four-cylinder delivers 193 horsepower and 188 pounds-feet of torque. Despite not being available with all-wheel drive, the light weight of the four-cylinder model gives the Blazer “a nimble feel.” The 3.6-liter V-6 is optional and, like the four-cylinder, it comes paired with a nine-speed automatic.

The other engine available, the V-6, delivers a total of 308 horsepower and 270 pounds-feet of torque. The generator supplies a “muted growl” and an “extra grunt.” Not to mention it also adds towing capacity and the option to add an all-wheel drive.

  1. Dashboard Design

If you think the exterior looks familiar, it resembles the Camaro, it does. The dashboard of the Blazer looks precisely like Chevy’s sports coupe. “The dash design is appealingly sporty from the placement of the multimedia screen to the round vent rings that also control temperature settings,” Bragman says.

  1. Upgraded AWD

When choosing the V-6 engine, you also have the choice of two all-wheel-drive systems. The version that is an option is the dual-clutch AWD system which can transfer power between the front and rear wheels and side to side. These can be added to the Premier and RS trims.

  1. Ride Control and Comfort

Chevy engineers deserve all of the credit for hitting a sweet spot when it comes to the riding and handling. “The steering has weight to it and body control is excellent,” Bragman says. The V-6 vehicles are about 400 pounds heavier than the four-cylinder FWD Blazer, it adds to this SUV’s solid feel and plants stance.

  1. Sport-Tuned Handling

Desire sharper steering in your SUV? The Blazer RS comes with a quicker steering ratio which provides more immediate responses. Bragman states the difference when it comes to the way it feels between the two steering systems is “barely noticeable.” Although the sporting character of the RS is still entertaining and impressive.

  1. Flashy RS Trim

Maybe the RS trim won’t attract all of the admirers’ attention. Credit this SUV’s look-at-me exterior, which includes unique trim and wheels that range up to 21 inches in diameter. It looks like a Camaro on stilts — and we mean that as a compliment.

  1. Interior Room

The front seats have enough room, and the rear seats can slide front and back for free extra legroom. It can also provide a little more cargo space if needed. Technically, there is room for five on the Blazer, but Bragman says three in the backseat “might be a pinch.”

  1. Cabin Tech

Chevy has good track records for offering easy-to-use infotainment systems, and the Blazer is no exception. Features also included are Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which is also standard. Its add-ons include a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless charging for smartphones, and a powerful Bose audio system.

  1. Towing Capacity

When it’s adequately equipped, the Blazer gives the towing capacity of 4,500 pounds. That’s not class-leading, but it places this Chevy right in the competition.
