2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Shows Off Its Diesel Power

Friday, December 18th, 2020

Chevrolet Tahoe’s New Diesel Options

In North America, diesel engines usually aren’t considered the most appealing engine option and this was especially true in the 1970s. During this time, General Motors made the transition from a gas V-8 engine to a diesel for its (now deceased) Oldsmobile brand. These engines resulted in miserable reliability issues, mainly involving head bolts that had too much pressure from the diesel compression.

Many years later (in 2001) the American automaker made the introduction of its powerful and tough Duramax diesel V-8 for its heavy-duty truck, which certainly made up for Olddie’s failure. Even more fascinating is the recent installment of light-duty Duramax inline-six on trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups, and gradually on all of the company’s remodeled full-sized SUVs, one of them being the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe.

The new lake-named vehicle will be sporting a turbocharged 3.0-liter Duramax, one out of the three available engines. Base models already have an impressive boost with 355 horsepower on a 5.3-liter V-8, while the top-tier High Country is geared up by a standard 6.2-liter with 420 horsepower. The diesel will have 277 horsepower, which is the least of the group, however, it’s 460 lb-ft of torque matches the 6.2’s engine.

Oftentimes, diesel engines come at a heftier cost, one of the reasons being that they integrate pricy exhaust-treatment systems keep their sootier emissions composed, however, that won’t be the case this time around. High Country trims, for example, include a $1500 credit as opposed to the bigger V-8. Lesser models only have a $995 line item and the most affordable Tahoe with the Duramax has a starting price of $53,295, (plus destination fee). At the same time, the inclusive High Country model starts at $69,395, (plus destination fee). Of course, these prices don’t take into account the optional equipment.

Great torque output is usually an implication for massive towing capabilities. The 3.0-liter Duramax rates the least weight out of the Tahoe’s powertrains, but it’s 8200 lb rating is still strong and tough enough to make an impact.

Choosing the Duramax won’t significantly change the driving behavior of the SUV. According to one car reviewer, their Tahoe model that was paired with a standard 10-speed automatic transmission made smooth and swift shuffles and reached 60 mph in 7.8 seconds; 5.8-liter powered models were only a second faster, and 6.2’s being the fastest.

The new diesel engine option isn’t just powerful, it’s also highly capable during the winter months. Unlike older engines, the 3.0-liter makes use of a fresh coolant-control system to be able to endure freezing temperatures. The Duramax’s computer manages flow to the head, engine block, oil, transmission cooler, cabin heater, cooler, as well as low and high-pressure exhaust-gas recirculation coolers. This enables the engine to send warm coolant to the cabin heater and with necessary haste.

As one should expect with any big and bad SUV of General Motors, the diesel Tahoe has an independent rear suspension, which allows passengers to have their own personal space and also betters the quality of the ride as opposed to the previous solid-rear-axle system. On top of this, the interior quality and design have received a significant upgrade both aesthetically and comfort-wise. However, nothing compares to the car’s new and efficient diesel engine.

Chevrolet Will Present The Electric Chevy K5 Blazer Concept At SEMA360

Monday, November 2nd, 2020

SEMA360 is an event that centers on manufacturer/attendee/media relationships, new product introductions, project vehicle debuts, industry-leading education, and unparalleled networking opportunities. For this year’s function, the Chevrolet company will present a 1977 version of their K5 Blazer converted into a fully-electric concept.

During the virtual showcase, Chevrolet Performance, an automotive performance parts brand, will sound out SEMA members receptive to building their own electric projects to aid in concluding Chevrolet’s original eCrate offering.

“As GM introduces a new fleet of electric vehicles, it creates an exciting opportunity to bring EV technology to the aftermarket,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance and Motorsports. “Our vision is to offer a comprehensive line of Connect and Cruise systems from Chevrolet Performance – delivering a solution for every customer ranging from LSX V-8s to eCrate conversions.”

Constructing The K5 Blazer-E

The American automaker first introduced the eCrate conversion concept with the Chevrolet eCOPO Camaro in 2018, with the 2019 Chevrolet E-10 following soon afterward. Based on the findings from those vehicles, they informed Chevrolet’s Electric Connect and Cruise strategy.

The revamped K5 Blazer-E maintains a lot of elements from the original Blazer, and just about 90 percent of the new parts fixed in the eCrate package are factory materials from the brand’s Bolt EV car.

The transformation of the 1977 K5 SUV started with the team removing the original 175-horsepower V-8 engine, as well as the three-speed automatic transmission, fuel system, and exhaust. Next, the crew built a special Bolt EV electric motor, bringing up the horsepower to 200 with 266 lb-ft of torque, also tacking on a Chevrolet Performance electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. The rest of the Blazer’s drivetrain remains unchanged, inclusive of the transfer case, driveshaft, and axles.

Power comes strictly from a 400-volt Bolt EV battery pack with 60 kilowatt-hours of workable energy fixed in the cargo area. Making use of production controllers and wiring harnesses conserves a lot of features of the Bolt, counting shock protection, battery heating and cooling, battery-overcharge protection as well as regenerative braking.

The components of the aftermarket encompass an electric power steering kit, an electric pump supplying vacuum to the stock brake system, and an electronic controller to drive inputs to the 1977 Blazer gauges like showing the battery’s state of charge on the originating fuel gauge.

eCrate Installer Certification Program

With the intention of making preparations for eCrate’s inauguration, Chevrolet Performance is certifying Electric Connect and Cruise installers. Chevrolet dealers that are partaking in the event will get the training, tools and equipment that is necessary to utilize the high-voltage systems and charging stations to be of service to vehicles of Chevrolet buyers.

In Brighton, Michigan, Lingenfelter Performance Engineering will be the first company to direct the training and certification program. This venture will help to clue in the certification process for upcoming installers.

It is expected that the 60-kWh Electric Connect and Cruise package will be readily available in the second half of next year, and will include:

  • 60-kWh battery pack
  • 200-horsepower electric motor
  • DC-to-AC power inverter to drive the electric motor
  • DC-to-DC power converter to power low-voltage systems
  • Wiring harnesses, controllers and water pumps for battery heating and cooling

Additionally, Chevrolet Performance will determine extra eCrate packages with options that have a higher performance as well as new battery configurations to suit a broader range of aftermarket applications. Long term, the crew will attempt to merge General Motors’ modular Ultium battery system technologies.

“Minutes after Chevrolet showed the E-10 concept, customers started calling to ask how soon they could build their EV project,” said Russ O’Blenes, Chevrolet director of engineering, Performance and Racing. “The K5 Blazer-E demonstrates what is possible for customers who want to convert their vintage truck to a daily driver with the instant torque and unique driving experience of an EV. For customers who want more extreme performance, the modular eCrate system will have virtually limitless applications.”

2021 Chevrolet Equinox

It’s only been a few weeks since the big premiere of the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox in China, and now, General Motors plans on releasing this crossover compact SUV over there and thus making them the first market in the world to receive the third-generation of this car’s update during the mid-cycle. In totality, there are 22 augmented features to better the competitiveness of the Equinox in the Chinese market.

As a result, not only does China’s refreshed Chevrolet truck welcome the automaker’s newest crossover form of design with its latest front fascia, but it also comes with sensational new powertrain features, more options for connectivity, and a supreme suite of active safety technologies. Moreover, it includes the RS trim level as a top-ranking variant for its range, which is the same case for the Chevrolet Blazer and Trailerblazer in the company’s local utility vehicle repertoire.

“Today’s midsize SUV buyers want a vehicle that meets all of their needs. The new Equinox delivers, starting with its new design, powertrain combination, locally tuned chassis and RS editions,” said General Director of Chevrolet for SAIC-GM, Scott Lawson, in a press release. He then continued, “It is joining the Blazer, Tracker and Trailblazer in Chevrolet’s crossover family, giving the brand a presence across the small, compact, midsize and mid-large mainstream segments to meet the different needs of buyers nationwide.”

The updated 2021 Equinox launched in the Asain country came with a sum of six different variants, also inclusive of three that are comparable to the LT trim level as well as three in the new RS model. All of these trims include an extensive list of standard equipment, not to mention the brand’s latest infotainment system with developed connectivity as well as an array of progressive driving aid systems. A base trim level is expected to be added at a later date.

From its launch, two powertrain options will be offered for the new car. The first is a turbocharged 1.5L LFV I-4 engine that makes out 166 horsepower with 184 pound-feet of torque, it also paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, meanwhile, the RS model features a turbocharged 2.0L LSY I-4 that powers up to 233 horsepower with 256 pound-feet of torque, joined with the brand’s nine-speed automatic transmission.
