The Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup truck made its comeback in the market about six years ago after being MIA for three years. A year after this, it obtained a 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder diesel engine option for the first time.
In 2017, a new V-6 engine was added, coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which was previously class-exclusive. It also received a custom ZR2 off-road edition for its unveiling.
Although the 8-speed automatic transmission aided in boosting the fuel economy for the gasoline engine, the optional diesel engine still has the best mileage at a rating of 18 mpg city, 22 highway and 19 combined on the 2020 Colorado ZR2 Bison short-box 4WD crew cab model.
For $5,750, the new Bison package, which was introduced just last year, reflects a partnership with the off-road and overland vehicle parts company dubbed American Expedition Vehicles.
The Bison package fuses the outstanding standard off-road characteristics of the ZR2 model with extra goodies such as the Chevy’s extended written grille as well as the AEV front and rear bumpers, fog lights, distinctive wheel moldings, floor liners, embellished headrests, custom AEV 17-inch aluminum wheels, and fuel tank/transfer case/rear differential skid plates. Additionally, there is an AEV air snorkel available as a separate accessory, this allows the engine to have a clean supply of air, which is especially important for when drivers go on their off-road adventures and encounter dusty dirt roads.
Standard features with the Chevy package include 4WD, front and rear automated-locking differentials, custom suspension dampers, off-road rocker-panel protection, reformed bumpers improved ground clearance, 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels matched with 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac off-road tires, cast-iron control arms, an aluminum skid plate for the protection of the radiator and engine oil plan, an AutoTrac transfer cast with underbody shield, specialized grille and hood, 3.42 rear axle ratio, 3.5-inch wider front and rear tracks, 2-inch higher suspension, Off-Road Mode technology, and four-wheel disc brakes.
Other additional prizes include a transmission tow, a trailering package with a hitch and seven-pin connector and integrated trailer brake controller as well as a spray-on bedliner, wireless phone charging, sliding rear window, EZ Lift and Lower locking tailgate and recovery hooks. There is also an additional tire included, which is helpful for any driver should they get stuck in the woodlands.
In the interior, drivers will enjoy the heated leather-trimmed front seats, automatic climate control, tilt-telescopic steering wheel (also heated and leather-wrapped) with audio and cruise controls, auto-dimming rearview mirror, fold-down rear seatback and carpeted floor mats.
Other standard interior features include a 6-speaker Chevrolet MyLink Radio with Navigation and an 8-inch touchscreen. It also comes with an AM/FM radio, Bluetooth streaming audio, voice-activated technology for radio and phone, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, rear-window defogger, OnStar 4G LTE with built-in Wi-Fi, rear-vision camera, remote keyless entry, a remote vehicle starter system, four USB ports, and an auxiliary audio jack.
The Colorado’s ZR2 engine has a standard 3.6-liter V-6 that pushes up to 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. Those who want double the torque can opt for the diesel engine which as 365 lb-ft of torque but with a diminished amount of 181 mpg horsepower. Diesel models also include an impressive diesel exhaust brake system that betters vehicle control and minimizes brake wear on steep grades.
The ZR2 Bison Crew model is usually priced around $53,000, (plus destination fee) but at the current date of this article, Miami Lakes Chevrolet is selling this off-road beauty for about $44,000, (plus destination fee).
