Differences Between Electric Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engines

18CHBO35014_V1.tif

Electric vehicles are a win-win. In comparison to vehicles with an internal combustion engine, EVs offer drivers financial savings in fuel costs and they do less damage to the environment because they produce fewer tailpipe emissions. If you are considering investing in an EV, there are a couple things about them that make driving and owning them unique, efficient and different.

Benefit from Less Maintenance Costs

EVs are actually a win-win-win! In addition to the environmental benefits and savings in fuel costs, owners can expect savings in maintenance costs in comparison to vehicles with internal combustion engines. First, there’s the money savings in usual brake maintenance. EVs have regenerative braking systems, which recycles the energy used to slow or stop the vehicle into energy that recharges the vehicle’s battery, and that results in less wear and tear on the vehicle’s brakes, so they actually last LONGER than regular brakes.

Oh, and oil changes and other engine maintenance, forget about it! Yeah, EV owners never spend the $20-30 on an oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles (which is an average of four oil changes a year for the average driver). Electric vehicles don’t have an internal combustion engine, which is what requires routine maintenance like oil changes, fluid fill ups, and or the maintenance that results from malfunctioning engine parts like spark plugs and belts.

New Driving Techniques

There are slight differences in the actual driving experience of an EV versus a vehicle with an internal combustion engine. The driving differences aren’t significantly different, but drivers tend to actually drive more energy efficiently when they have an EV.

First, the Chevy Bolt EV and many other EVs have a one-pedal driving system. According too GreenCarReports.com, “One-pedal driving combines conventional acceleration, using the right-hand pedal, with a much higher degree of deceleration than in a conventional car. That means that when a driver lifts off the pedal, the car slows down more quickly than an internal-combustion-powered car would.”

Second, many EVs and PHEVs are available with tech systems that provide drivers with tips and guidance on how they can drive more efficiently and maintain battery life longer. The systems are not forceful or requirements to drive differently, just ways to improve the EV experience.

New Look

EVs also look different than traditional vehicles and there are a few reasons for that. First of all, EVs don’t need an exhaust because they don’t emit any tailpipe emissions! Pretty weird, huh? Second of all, designers go to great lengths to maximize the vehicle’s energy efficiency, so EVs have a very aerodynamic exterior, which to some people looks “funny” and “futuristic,” but like it or not, that’s the direction all vehicle design is going in. There is a huge push for more fuel efficient vehicles, and improved aerodynamics are an easy and cost-efficient way to improve the fuel economy of any vehicle. Third, instead of a fuel filler, EVs have an outlet! The outlet is usually covered just like the opening of a fuel filler, but it is a different look.

What We Know about 2019 Chevy Silverado

The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado was introduced at an event

We don’t have to speculate much on any rumors concerning the upcoming 2019 Chevy Silverado, the newest pick-up from Chevy. To celebrate over 100 years of Chevy trucks, a helicopter brought the new 2019 Chevy Silverado to the Texas Motor Speedway during the Chevy Truck Centennial event. The truck is to officially debut next month at the North American International Auto Show.

The 2019 Silverado will be available in eight trims and there will be various engine/transmission options to choose from, providing more options than before. Chevy has also acknowledged they’ll vamp up their technology, offer additional convenience features and improve on the previous year.

Rumors have it that the 2019 Silverado will offer more engine and transmission options, like the new 10-speed automatic currently found in the 2018 Tahoe and Suburban with the 6.2-liter L86 V-8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Speculation is that there will also be a range of diesels available.

Speculation as to the materials used that make up the truck’s bed is unknown, but those details on the Silverado’s specifics, including weight savings from the previous year will be available in January 2018. Some rumors are that the bed will be lined with some new carbon fiber composite. Time will tell, but we’ll know soon.

For more information about when you can see the new 2019 Chevy Silverado for yourself, check with your South Florida source for the latest new trucks at Miami Lakes Automall.

colorado vs ridgeline miami lakes chevy

Compact Truck Comparison: Chevy Colorado v. Honda Ridgeline

colorado vs ridgeline miami lakes chevy

The biggest competitor of the Chevy Colorado is the Honda Ridgeline as they are both small, compact, yet capable trucks. However, it is tough to say they are competitors as the Ridgeline really doesn’t get close to the awesomeness the Colorado is. Not only is the Colorado better selling and better looking, but it also beats out the Ridgeline in many categories. Price, engine options, capability, performance, and fuel efficiency are some of the categories, just to name a few!

The Chevy Colorado comes standard with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and it is also available with two upgraded engine options (a 3.6-liter V6 engine and a 2.8-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine). The Honda Ridgeline comes with just one engine standard for all trim levels. The engine is a 3.5-liter V6 engine. Depending on the engine, the Colorado can produce up to 308 horsepower while the Ridgeline produces up to 280 horsepower.

Capability and fuel efficiency are both important when it comes to new vehicles (yes, even for trucks!). With that being said, the Chevy Colorado has the capability to tow between 3,500 and 7,000 pounds depending on engine, drivetrain, axle ratio and more. The Ridgeline =has the capability of towing between 2,500 and 5,000 pounds (that’s 2,000 pounds less than the Chevy). The most fuel efficient Colorado has a fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while the Ridgeline averages 16 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Whether you need extra towing capacity or better fuel economy, the Colorado is your truck!

Finally, onto the moment you have probably been waiting for, price! Of course price for both of these trucks vary depending on trim level, but the Colorado is way more affordable. The Chevy Colorado has a starting price of $20,000. Meanwhile, just the Honda Ridgeline starts at $29,745.

Let’s be real, there is a clear winner between these two trucks! If you are looking to purchase or lease the winning Chevy Colorado, check out our inventory at Miami Lakes Chevy online here.

Two of Chevy’s Truck Concepts Displayed at SEMA

carhartt-silverado-SEMA-Miami-Lakes-Chevy

Chevy has long been known for their sedans and performance cars, so of course Chevy had some excellent models on display this year at SEMA, but Chevy’s display at SEMA also featured some really cool concept trucks. This year Chevy partnered up with two very different clothing companies, Carhartt and Hurley, for two truck concepts.

Chevy Silverado HD Carhartt Concept

Carhartt has long been known for creating durable work wear that is popular among hunters, outdoorsmen and people in the farming and construction industries. So it was pretty perfect for a truck company like Chevy to partner up with Carhartt.

The engine on the Silverado HD Carhartt concept is a revised version of the Duramax Turbodiesel V8 engine. This version of the engine is able to produce up to 445 horsepower and a very impressive 910 lb-ft of torque. Wow! The engine is paired with a Allison transmission as well as a off-road suspension with a one-inch lift.

The Carhartt brand is truly integrated into the design of this Silverado HD inside and out. Carhartt interior features like the “duck brown” Carhartt color interior accents on the black leather seats, door panels, and console. Special Carhartt “C” logos as well as well as a special edition Silverado logo on the headrest of the seats as well as the floor mats. Read the rest of this entry >>

Basics of EVs, PHEVs and Hybrid Vehicles + Green Chevy Models

hybrid-evs-miami-lakes-chevy

Last week we discussed the 2017 Chevy hybrids, PHEVs and EVs, but all of that can seem like a lot of “talk” if you don’t really know the differences between each of those systems or the benefits to owning a “greener” vehicle. In addition to just saving you money in annual fuel costs, vehicles powered by alternative fuels also have fewer emissions and a new way of measuring fuel economy.

First, it is important to understand the difference between hybrids, PHEVs and electric vehicles.

A hybrid is a vehicle that can run on battery, gas, or a combination of both. They are usually equipped with a gas engine, electric motor, and battery.

Chevy’s available hybrid is the Chevy Malibu Hybrid. You can search out Chevy Malibu inventory here.

A plug-in electric hybrid, or PHEV, is equipped with a gas engine, electric motor, and battery. Like a hybrid, a PHEV can also run on only electric, only gas or a combination of both, but the battery in PHEVs is larger so it can power the vehicle on electricity much longer than hybrids, but the larger battery needs to be plugged-in to be recharged.

Chevy’s available PHEV is the 2016/2017 Chevy Volt. You can search our Chevy Volt inventory here.

An electric vehicle, or EV, runs purely on an electricity that is supplied by a battery. It needs to be plugged-in to be recharged. Read the rest of this entry >>

Chevy Adds Diesel Option on 2018 Chevy Equinox

 chevy-equinox-miami-lakes-auto-mall-chevy

Coming in early 2017 is the new 2018 Chevy Equinox, which will be lighter and available with an all-new diesel engine – the first diesel on a CUV in the U.S. Check out what changes are coming to the 2018 Chevy Equinox

Engines

The 2018 Equinox lineup will be available with three different turbocharged engines, including the 1.5-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, a 2.0-liter turbo engine, and an all-new 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine. The new diesel engine is expected to produce 136 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque and  GM says the diesel engine will have a fuel economy of 40 mpg on the highway.

All-New Interior and Exterior

What other changes are being made to the 2018 Chevy Equinox? So far we know the exterior and interior have both gone through a major redesign. The body is four inches shorter and the entire vehicle is 400 pounds lighter, yet somehow Chevy managed to add 3.5 cubic feet of cargo space inside the vehicle. Read the rest of this entry >>
