The Fate Of The Chevrolet Malibu

Is The Chevy Malibu Here To Stay?

For the past few years, there’s been a significant emphasis on SUVs in North America, leaving some of previous fan-favored sedans or hatchbacks on the backburner…except for the Chevrolet Malibu. Word on the automotive street is that this mid-sizer could be cruising around the American stateside for at least one more generation.

Keep in mind that this rumor follows after previous talk of the Malibu sedan being discontinued in 2024. The car blog site, GM Authority supposedly has an inside source confirming that a new generation is set for 2025 and might journey along a reformed version of its current platform. Another site, Motor1, reached Chevy for possible word on this allegation but for the moment, their questions haven’t been answered.

While the car company hasn’t confirmed…or denied these rumors, there appears to be some persuasive evidence to back the Malibu’s continued lifespan. While we’re still waiting for the automaker’s final sales figures for 2022, through October, the car’s sales were up a jaw-dropping 148 percent compared to 2021. The company reported that 79,799 units were sold through the first three quarters of the year, whilst only 39,376 Malibu sedans were sold for all of 2021.

To compare, the Chevy Malibu has outsold various notable SUVs by the bowtie company, like the Blazer, Traverse, Trailblazer, Suburban, and Tahoe. It’s also outperforming the Chevy Colorado; however, sales for this truck could expand next year owing to the new-generation model that was released last July. Moving out of the confines of its parent company, General Motors (GM), the mid-size Malibu is still far from ranking as the best-selling sedan, as this honor is bestowed upon the Toyota Camry. This car achieved 214,403 sales through October 2022.

If the Malibu continues to show what it’s made of for second-generation using a reformed version of its current platform, that hints that it would offer internal combustion power. Alternatively, as with other car manufacturers, GM isn’t so keen on promoting gasoline-powered vehicles these days, as it’s focusing its efforts on its Ultium-powered electric vehicles. Then, with states such as California and Oregon wanting to ban new internal-combustion car sales by 2035, there may or may not be enough time for one more gasoline-powered generation.

The Chevy Malibu nameplate has a long history in the automotive industry, dating back to 1964. After a bit of a pause for most of the 1980s and 1990s, it made a comeback in 1997 and has been a significant part of the company’s sedan lineup ever since. The current-gen Malibu dates back to 2016, with a mid-cycle refresh hitting in 2019. Some of the best features of the current Malibu include wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Keyless Entry Keypad, Automatic Parking Assist, Wireless charging, Teen Driver, and Buckle to Drive. All of these features can be found in the 2023 model for a starting MSRP of $24,700 (plus destination fee).

The Chevy Malibu Sedan Gets Recharged

A Chevy Malibu EV Sedan?

This past decade, we’ve seen a significant surge in the popularity of SUVs and crossovers, ultimately leading to the slow downfall of Chevrolet’s previous fan-favorite, the Malibu sedan. For the past few years, this mid-sizer has been showing its age regarding its gradual fade into obscurity. However, all hope is not lost because there is the future of the Malibu car; according to General Motors president Mark Reuss, the automaker will have another electric revamp. During a recent Investor Day presentation in China, Reuss revealed that Chevrolet is toling with a “low-roof” EV that will have sedan-like proportions.

The upcoming electric sedan has just moved into the early stages of development. Still, according to Reuss, the design is quite “dramatic,” saying that the EV will take up the same mid-size segment as the current-gen Malibu. This possible successor has already been approved for the Chinese market, as sedans are still a hot commodity there, but the company may eventually offer this car in North America. Reuss seemed to entertain the thought of the EV’s availability in the U.S., saying at the function, “… we’ll see the desirability as we clinic this.”

Chevrolet recently introduced an electric sedan concept in China dubbed the FNR-XE. Its design gives us a taste of the EV that Reuss suggested. On top of this, the concept is derived from the Ultium battery platform. The overall shape resembles the Honda e:N2 concept, which was revealed for China last month. Honda and GM are already joining forces for the electric crossovers, with the Chevy Blazer EV and Honda Prologue acting as bunkmates for the same platform.

GM introduced four new EV models derived from the platform, but the other three that have been introduced include the Cadillac Lyriq, GMC Hummer EV, and the Buick Electra-X.

GM said at the function:

“From fuel to electric, from horsepower to computing power, new technology has become a new engine to drive the upgrading of automobile products and promote the leapfrog development of the automobile industry.”

The Malibu’s possible fully-electrified successor will be introduced to the Chinese market toward the end of 2024. Therefore, if GM decided to bring it to the U.S., it likely wouldn’t begin until at least 2025.

While various customers have been captivated by SUVs in recent years, the Malibu sedan still represents a good chunk of Chevy’s sales. After seeing a significant decline in 2021, specifically a drop of 102,651 units in 2020 to just 39,376 units, the Malibu bounced back this year, with nearly 80,000 units sold through the third quarter.

While there is still a market for sedans in North America, an electric version of the Malibu may be what the company needs to bring a full-on resurgence to the car, especially as we shy away from gas-powered vehicles.

The Chevy Impala Is Finally Laid To Rest…For The Third Time

In the past few decades, wakes and funerals have been held for the dearly departed Chevrolet Impala not once but twice, only for the model to resurrect itself once again. However, it seems as though this Chevy sedan is finally ready to be put to rest and permanently.

Arriving right on time, the last model for the Impala came down the assembly line at General Motors in the Detroit, Hamtramck assembly plant on the 27th of last month. On Instagram, WXYZ, local ABC News subsidiary posted a photo of the final model, showing a model with a “Cajun red” color. Judging from the chrome accents on the exterior it looks very capable and well equipped.

A representative from Chevy recently spoke to Roadshow, a news section of an American media website called CNET, and said in a statement that “as the market has shifted from sedans we’ve had to respond to customer demand.” This car, in particular, will not continue to linger with General Motors (GM), but rather has been sold to a private owner.

Previously, GM said that the production of the Impala and Cadillac CT6 would come to end this past January, however, the Impala received an extended but short stay past its expiration date. As far as we know, the CT6, the only model to tag onto GM’s previously-acclaimed Omega platform, will not receive a new heir.

The same is true for the Impala. Therefore, this will leave the Chevy Malibu as the only family sedan left in the brand’s lineup. Furthermore, recent information has suggested that the car still has some lasting power with minimal changes coming. Alternatively, we still may see a permanent departure with the Malibu during this decade.

GM has largely moved its materials away from passenger cars to crossovers and SUVs that receive more of a profit and are high in popularity. In the meantime, the automaker continues to invest millions of dollars into its electric vehicles and self-driving car programs. Although its Cruise Automation affiliate takes care of the autonomous technology, GM continues to strive for an all-electric future.

This concept will begin to take place with the electric version of the GMC Hummer, the automaker plans to build this invigorated model at its Detriot plant. The Cadillac Escalade EV could also join the Hummer in due time at the same plant. GM is hoping to make the production facility its home ground for autonomous production in North America and enticed the United Auto Workers about the future of EV’s at union labor negotiations the year before. However, this seems quite ironic seeing how GM originally made plans for closing the facility.

Chevrolet Leads the Way In Safety Features For Teens

Chevy Miami Lakes Automall

Chevrolet is taking a strong stance on a group notorious for poor driving habits, bad judgment and a lack of experience: teenage drivers. Among the biggest reasons teen drivers are a threat on the road to themselves and others isn’t speeding as much as it is driving without a seatbelt. Chevrolet has stepped in with a new way to curb this problem. In fact, they have found the perfect solution that won’t just curve this problem, but enhance safety features in a way never before done by the brand. Other automotive companies should take notice, as Chevrolet introduces a feature that will not allow drivers to move unless their seatbelt is clicked-in.

More on Chevrolet’s Latest Safety Measure

Chevrolet’s latest program that has launched is known as “Buckle To Drive”, which is accurately named. This is going to be a standard feature for the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse, Colorado and Malibu vehicles. The way it works is basically, teen drivers will have to adhere to the rule set up by the owner of the vehicle. Parents can easily set up the key fob to a “teen driver” setting that will ensure the only way the vehicle can move from park is by having the seatbelt clicked in. Even better, all the fun options that come with driving, like the sound system and radio will not work unless the seatbelt is fastened in.

Improving On a Good Idea

Chevrolet has had multiple programs and features in previous years that have aimed at making drivers safer on the road. In 2016, Chevy launched a new program called Teen Driver with the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu that would monitor a driver’s behavior and rewarded the driver with incentives. The program included a feature that would silence the radio as well as automatically set off all safety measures including Traction Control, Forward Collision Braking, Stability Control, and Front Pedestrian Braking. This great system was set up using a configurable PIN code and parents could even set how high the volume would be allowed to go with a limit. The best feature? Alerts could be set off if the teen driver hit a certain speed limit. The speed range could be set as low as 40 mph. The over-speed warning system would set off a ping that would go to the owner and registers the infraction. That program was found to help drivers put on their seatbelt at a 17 percent more effective rate than without it, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Chevrolet Is Committed to Improving Standard Safety Features

We commend Chevrolet for raising the stakes even further with this new program that will effectively ensure drivers, no matter what age, can be forced into using their seatbelt. Raising the level of safety will go a long way to ensuring better safety on the road, something we can all appreciate. The newest Chevy vehicles coming out in the next decade will continue to impress and provide amazing results.

“We have been researching this system for quite some time. So, we found this feature that works, and a group of people who could really benefit from it,” said Tricia Morrow, a safety strategy engineer at Chevrolet’s parent company General Motors.
