The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Has the Highest EPA-Certified Fuel Economy

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel has the highest EPA-certified fuel economy ratings for a 2020 full-size truck. The diesel powered Silverado delivers 23 mpg city/33 highway/27 combined. The 2020 Silverado 1500 premiers General Motors’ new diesel engine, which is a 3.0-liter Duramax turbocharged inline six-cylinder. It has a rating of 277 hp, and 460 pound-feet of torque and the powerplant will also be available in the GMC Sierra.

The Silverado diesel has a 10-speed automatic transmission and it also has a fuel-saving stop-start system. The Silverado has a six-mpg advantage over the Ram. The Ram can be expected to narrow the gap when it launches a new diesel later this year.

This summer Ram will offer the only other full-size light-duty diesel pickup which will launch an updated version of its 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6, and it had a rating at 20 mpg city/27 highway/23 combined when it was sold in 2017. Honda, Toyota, and Nissan vehicles do not offer diesel engines in their light-duty trucks, even though the Titan by Nissan has a Cummins diesel motor which is considered a heavy-duty truck, like the Ford F-250.

How Long Is It On Top?

The Silverado will probably hold the fuel economy title in the future. The F-150 would need significant upgrades to eclipse the Chevy truck. To surpass Silverado’s 1500 diesel vehicle, Ram would need to boost highway fuel economy by more than 20 percent.

Chevrolet boasts the industry’s most extensive diesel lineup with the addition of the Silverado 1500 diesel. The fuel-saving engine is available in midsize Colorado, new medium-duty Silverado, and the heavy-duty Silverado. Chevrolet’s 1500 diesel can tow up to 9,300 pounds, and it can haul 1,870 pounds of cargo in its bed. 

More Than A Drivetrain:

Silverado’s executive chief engineer, Tim Herrick, said that the diesel’s fuel economy rating is in the result of more of the efficient drivetrain on the vehicle. While the Silverado is known for its busy styling, Herrick explained during a walk-around of the truck, how the air curtains on the lower front fenders improve the aerodynamics.

“The proportions of the truck, the roofline, the mirrors, air curtains, everything was in line with getting the aerodynamics that could get us great fuel economy,” he said. The truck’s driving range drives more than 600 miles on a full tank. Although the entire 2019 EPA fuel economy guide is not published yet, the Silverado diesel has a reasonable shot at becoming the most fuel-efficient pickup regardless of size. 

In the 2019 guide, there is no two-wheel-drive pickup with a higher ranking, and all of the other competitors are way behind. However, the Silverado diesel’s fuel economy is higher than the GMC Canyon and the lighter Chevrolet Colorado. Those pickups can also be ordered with diesel engines, but the highest fuel economy ratings are 20 mpg city/30 highway/23 combined.

For 2020, Chevrolet makes the most reliable, and most advanced Silverado with several new features that include the new 10-speed automatic transmission which is paired with the 5.3L V-8 standard on the LT Trail Boss. It is available on the High Country with the legendary 6.2L V-8 which is offered on the Custom Trail Boss, LT Trail Boss and RST trim. The available technologies, including new trailering features and Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera.

“In today’s truck market, customers continually demand more features, more technology, and more capability,” said Tim Herrick, chief executive engineer of Full-Size Trucks. “For 2020, we are delivering more in each of these areas. As a result, the Silverado now offers customers the most towing capacity of any light-duty pickup and the most affordable light-duty truck with more than 400 horsepower.”

More than half of the Silverado trim levels will be available with the 6.2L V-8 with an SAE-certified 420 hp for 2020 and a 460 lb-ft of torque, which is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. For the LT Trail Boss and the Custom Trail Boss, that power has a 2-inch factory suspension lift, and the Z71 Off-Road Package has skid plates, a locking rear differential, 18-inch wheels, Rancho monotube off-road shocks, and Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires. The Custom Trail Boss, with its 6.2L V-8 engine, starts at $43,865 (which includes the destination fee), and it makes this vehicle the most affordable light-duty truck with more than 400 horsepower available.

“The Trail Boss models are already some of the most popular in the Silverado franchise,” said director of Chevrolet Truck Marketing Sandor Piszar. “Adding the available 6.2L V-8 will ratchet that excitement up even further. Starting under $44,000 for the Custom Trail Boss, Chevrolet offers enthusiasts an affordable truck with serious performance on and off-road.”

New for 2020, is the engine which is a 6.2L V-8, available on the Silverado RST models which come equipped with four-wheel drive as well. Because of it, the maximum when it comes to towing on the Silverado is increased to 13,400 pounds when it’s properly equipped. If the driver wants even more when it comes to performance, the Silverado 6.2L has a Performance Upgrade Package that delivers a cat-back performance exhaust system and performance air intake, raising the output to 435 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque.

Say Goodbye to the Manual Transmission on the Chevrolet Corvette C8

The stick shift days on a Corvette may be numbered indeed. General Motors revealed the redesigned Corvette on July 18th with eye-popping new features such as an engine that is situated under the vehicle’s midsection, instead of being under the hood, which maximizes speed. What doesn’t it have? A manual transmission.

The 2020 Corvette Stingray will have an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that will provide lightning-fast shifts and excellent power transfers, Chevrolet has stated. It’s matched with an “electronic transmission range selector,” which removes the mechanical connection between the transmission and shift stick. It will also incorporate paddle shifters for those who want to design their vehicle to their specifications. 

A dual-clutch transmission is conclusively a manual. Drivers don’t need to fumble for the clutch and use their hands to switch gears when driving the car. The old-school stick shift that defined what the modern vehicles were in the early years is gone with the C8 Corvette.

This has been a long-time rumor, but it won’t make it any easier for the stick-shift loyalists. But the loyalists out there are a “loud minority,” said Karl Brauer, executive publisher of car information and buying sites for Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book. Some enthusiasts might “make all sorts of screams and noises” about the change, but essentially “it’s just getting harder and harder to justify a manual transmission given the low volume,” Brauer said.

The new mid-engined Corvette steps up its pursuit of the Porsche and Ferrari. Entry-level version features a massive 6.2-liter V8 LT2 engine with 495 hp, and 637 Nm of torque and the crankshaft sits at 2.5 cm lower to the ground. The LT2 now uses an engine-mounted dry sump oil system, and three scavenge pumps.

For the first time, the Corvette will not be offered with a manual gearbox. Chevrolet has instead opted to use a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), designed in collaboration with TREMEC. It features a double-paddle de-clutch feature which disconnects the clutch by holding both paddles.

Performance is expected to be blistering. Corvette will offer an optional Z51 package which gives an improved passive suspension system with manually adjustable springs, larger brake rotors, improved cooling, specific axle ratio, and a performance exhaust. Going 60 mph should take just 3 seconds.

The chassis will remain aluminum in preference to the carbon fiber monocoques that have become ordinary for mid-engined supercars now. The chassis will be 137 mm in length over the Corvette C7, which is an extra 56 mm in width. It will be offered in right and left-hand drive variations.

When it comes to design, the Corvette will get a low profile headlamp and the hidden door handles will ensure that the lines are not disturbed. Larger side air intakes were imperative for the vehicle. Chevrolet has chosen a small rear spoiler to complement the front spoiler which adds 180 kg of downforce.

The main functions inside are especially driver-oriented. The entire cockpit sits 42 cm further forward and it features a line of buttons that run along with the center console towards a central monitor. The steering wheel has been stationed to validate an unobstructed view of the 12-inch digital cluster.

The leather finishes come standard with Corvette choosing to use real metal wherever it’s possible. The stainless steel speaker grills cover a Bose audio system and carbon-fiber trim are also available as an option. There are three seat options which are available with GT1 offering the most comfort, GT2 an intermediate opportunity and Competition Sport focussed on performance.

Twelve exterior colors will also be made available with six interior themes, two stitching patterns, and six-seat belt colors. As for availability, there have been no details that have been confirmed; however, we know that production will begin late 2019. The Corvette will be offered both stateside, and in Europe for the first time as well.

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox Will Not Have a Diesel Option

Chevy’s experimenting with a diesel-powered compact crossover is coming to an end after two years. Chevrolet spokesman Kevin Kelly confirmed to Green Car Reports that the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox would not be available with a 1.6-liter turbodiesel. It’s time to say goodbye to the Chevy Diesel.

“We have discontinued the diesel engine option for the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox due to low demand,” GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly said. GM had attached the diesel powertrain to the Equinox as part of its redesign for the 2018 model year, as well as a diesel option to the corporate sibling, the GMC Terrain, that same year. A GMC spokesperson confirmed to caranddriver.com that the diesel Terrain is also getting cut.

“We will only offer our two turbocharged gas engines in the Terrain for 2020,” said spokesperson Stuart Fowle. “Diesel represented a very small percentage of sales. We believe in diesel in segments where customer interest is higher”. 

The Canyon is still offering the diesel; while the Sierra will provide a refined 3.0-liter Duramax for 2020. The next-gen Sierra HD is shipping to dealers being the most capable Duramax available. Chevy indicated that it would scrap all-wheel-drive versions of the turbodiesel Equinox earlier in 2019. The engine option is now completely gone, although that left room for front-wheel-drive versions to continue. The GMC Terrain, which shares many pieces with the Equinox such as the powertrains, they may also face a similar destiny. A spokeswoman for GMC didn’t instantly comment on if the turbodiesel would return for the Terrain, according to greencarreports.com. 

The engine went out of production for the U.S. market earlier this year which was also available in the Chevrolet Cruze. The reasoning behind the diesel engine being killed on the Equinox is unclear, as the Equinox was rated high having 28 mpg city, 39 highway, 32 combined according to the EPA. Costumers are still bitter about the sticker shock with the $2,400 upcharge for the diesel engine compared to the base models, which could be the reason for the diesel’s short life. 

Relatively high diesel fuel prices compared to regular unleaded may have also hampered sales. On Thursday, July 11th, 2019, AAA reported the national average for a gallon of gasoline was $2.75 compared to $3.03 for diesel fuel. At that rate, drivers may face decades before recouping the upfront cost for the diesel engine. 

We are in the middle of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and truck drivers will already see the increased diesel fuel prices due to rising fuel taxes. Automakers have wrestled with offering diesel-powered SUVs in the past few years. Hyundai ditched plans to offer a turbodiesel-powered version of its Santa Fe crossover last year, reportedly because of onerous regulatory approval for diesel, post-Dieselgate. This week, Ford announced it would shelve the diesel-powered Transit Connect van before it was offered in the States. 

Jaguar Land Rover stopped offering Jaguar F-Pace and Range Rover Velar crossovers with a turbodiesel for 2020, too. The least expensive 2019 diesel Equinox was the LT trim, which started at $32,495 (plus destination fee). This was a $2400 premium over the same trim with a gas engine. 

Going diesel was also raising the price to be a $3700 upcharge over the base model, which was only available in a gas engine. The 2019 Terrain, which is the cheapest diesel in the SLE trim, starts at $32,995 (plus destination fee). It also represented a $3,700 increase over the similar trim gas models as well.

General Motors has sold 332,618 Terrains and 332,618 Equinox CUVs in 2018. During the first six months of 2019, GM sold a total of 174,157 Equinox CUVs and 174,157 Terrains. The company did not comment to questions about how many of those were types of diesel vehicles. The Diesel Technology Forum states GM sold 3045 Terrain diesel in 2018, and it did not provide numbers for the Equinox diesel sales.

Mazda has committed to bringing a diesel-powered crossover to the U.S. At the 2019 New York International Auto Show, they announced it would finally sell a diesel-powered CX-5 crossover in the U.S. after years of delays. The diesel engine is available only on the CX-5 Signature crossovers and it will cost more than $42,000 (plus the destination fee), and the EPA rates the turbodiesel at a relatively unimpressive 28/31/29 mpg.

General Motors (GM) has shaken up its business with new changes announced to recreate their brand. They announced in November a large restructuring that starts at the top of the automaker and works its way down. They had announced the Chevy Volt will see its run end, but that was only to make way for the new Chevy Bolt EUV. Electric vehicles are known as EV for short, the EUV stands for “electric utility vehicle”. This will be Chevrolet’s next Bolt-based electric car. While we don’t know all the details for what the Chevy product will have underneath the hood, we do have an idea of what it could look like. 

More On the Upcoming Chevy Bolt EUV

This new Bolt looks quite different than the current Bolt, but it has some evidence of the Bolt’s design. The new Bolt EUV rendering adopts heavily from the all-new Chevy Blazer with its skinny headlights, full lower front fascia, and sportier overall presentation. Chevrolet has added some bits of the Malibu within the appearance down the side of the vehicle. GM has even filed a trademark for the name and said the vehicle would be manufactured its next all-electric vehicle at its Orion, Michigan factory. Part of General Motor’s plans was to update the very plant where this vehicle is set to be produced. 

Setting Up the Chevy Bolt EUV For Success

The Michigan factory is undergoing a $300 million investment overhaul from the automaker. Chevy has said their new EV is set to wear the Chevrolet bow tie while sitting on an enhanced version of the platform found under the current Chevy Bolt. The Bolt EUV is going to be more prominent as far as most crossovers are made, but should be a hit for its size and incredible gas mileage. The current Bolt EV is a purely electronic vehicle that can achieve a full charge with a 220-volt outlet charge in 9.3 hours and provide drivers with 238 miles of driving off that lone charge. The 2500 and 3500 HDs are legally classified as medium-duty trucks, and it offers eight digital cameras that provide every trailer view you can imagine, and some it took a room full of engineers to think of.

The “transparent trailer,” for example, has a view that combines the feeds from several cameras that shows what’s next to and what’s behind the trailer. The view modifies when drivers turn to show what’s alongside the trailer, making it easier to navigate in tight spaces. The eight digital cameras provide 15 views in total.

The New 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Is Launching and Here’s Everything It Offers

The all-new, fifth-generation Chevrolet Tahoe launches during the 2021 model year, not the 2020 model year as many initially believed. It means that the current, fourth-generation model gets to live for another model year as the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe, while it was receiving a few minor updates and changes. Let’s find out what those differences on the 2020 Tahoe are. 

There are not a lot of changes to the model line or the mechanical side of the full-size SUV. The changes to the exterior are limited to the deletion of the Pepperdust Metallic color as well as the new finishes for the wheels. There are the 22-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels with custom silver accents (SGK) and 22-inch Bright machined aluminum wheels with Bright Silver finish (SIY).

The Tahoe is Chevrolet’s stalwart, a truck-based SUV with a traditional V-8 up front (choose from two), and commanding ride. The Tahoe’s blocky exterior and car-like interior are plain, but refreshingly simple compared to others in its class. The long, two-box look has aged well, and although a redesigned Tahoe is on the horizon, we hope it doesn’t stray too far from the simple look that makes the current version endearing in our eyes. 

Inside, the Tahoe is simple and straightforward, and the column shifter should’ve been the first clue. Chevy’s family hauler is steadfast in its M.O. for family detail. Similarly, the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe won’t bring any changes or updates to the interior. 

The two remaining changes will impact the two optional packages, as the full-size SUV deletes the All-Season Package and the LT Signature Package. Here’s what each of those now-deleted packages contained. There is the All-Season Package, which was available only on the LS model and included is the 20″ x 9″ polished aluminum wheels, P275/55R20 all-season Blackwall tires, Body-color bodyside moldings, Black roof rack cross rails, Max Trailering Package, All-weather floor mats, and All-weather rear cargo mat.

Included on the LT Signature Package, will be the 20″ x 9″ chrome wheels, P275/55R20 all-season Blackwall tires, Bright bodyside moldings, Grille insert, Polished exhaust tip, Chrome recovery hooks, and Chrome assists step kit. The Tahoe’s standard 5.3-liter V-8 makes 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic and rear- or all-wheel drive. It’s rated to tow up to 8,600 pounds. An optional 6.2-liter V-8 makes 420 hp, and 460 lb-ft is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission in some models.

Although both engines come equipped with cylinder-shutdown technology, neither one is very fuel-efficient. Similar to the 5.3-liter V-8, the 6.2-liter is rated to tow up to 8,400 pounds, which is more than the Palisade. The Tahoe’s powertrains are stout and robust, offering plenty of passing power in exchange for its thirst at 18 mpg combined in its most efficient form. 

That’s what rounds out the changes to the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe. You may have noticed that these changes are identical to those of the Tahoe’s extended-length twin, the 2020 Chevy Suburban. For cargo, the Tahoe’s 15.8 cubic feet is impressive behind the third row, although the Palisade offers 18 cubic feet and with the second row folded, both open up more space—52 cubic feet in the Tahoe compared to 46 in the Palisade.
