2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 Configurations, Engines and Trims

Consumers that are new to the truck world sometimes feel a little confused by all of the options. One way to narrow down the search for a new truck is by considering dependability, and considering that the Chevy Silverado was just named the Most Dependable in its class in the 2018 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, that’s not a hard decision. However, even when the options have been narrowed down to the Chevy Silverado there are still a lot of decisions to make about their Silverado like which engine option, which trim and which drivetrain, do I want?

We’re here to try and make it easier for consumers to find out which 2018 Silverado 1500 truck options, and there are a lot of them,  will be best for their needs. The Chevy Silverado 1500 is available in six trims, with three engine options, two drivetrains (2WD or 4WD), three cab options and three truck bed lengths (short bed, standard bed or long bed). There are also several different packages available with various trims.

Cab Options and Truck Bed Lengths

The three available cabin sizes on the 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 are the two-door regular cab, four-door crew cab and four-door double cab, and the crew cab is the larger four-door option. The crew cab and double cab are available with five or six passenger seating, and that depends on the configuration of the front seats. Trucks with a a front bench seat provide seating for up to six passengers and trucks with two front bucket seats only provide seating for up to five passengers.

4.3L Engine

There are three engines available on the Silverado lineup. The smallest engine is the 4.3-liter V6 engine and it produces 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque and a maximum towing capacity of 7,600 pounds. The 4.3L engine gives the Chevy Silverado 1500 an average fuel economy of 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

5.3L Engine

A step up from the 4.3L engine is the 5.3-liter V8 engine, which generates 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The 5.3L engine gives the 2018 Silverado 1500 a max towing capacity of 11,100 pounds and a fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. In select states, Chevy offers the engine with eAssist technology, which adds a battery component into the powertrain to assist with certain engine tasks, and the battery component boosts torque and increases fuel economy. The 5.3L with eAssist technology has a fuel economy of 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

6.2L V8 Engine

The Chevy Silverado 1500 is also available with a 6.2-liter V8 that’s capable of producing 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The 6.2L increases the Chevy Silverado’s towing capacity to 12,500 pounds, which is a best-in-class towing capacity for V8 engines. When the Silverado 1500 is equipped with the 6.2L engine it has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.

Decisions are a little more difficult to make when it comes to deciding on which trim to get because the Silverado 1500 is available with a great selection of trims.

Silverado 1500 WT

The base trim is the WT or “Work Truck” trim and it is a no frills trim that is affordable and provides all of the essentials needed to get a job done. To make it easy for people to get the truck they need for business needs, the Silverado 1500 WT is available with three cab sizes and three truck bed lengths and it comes standard with the 4.3L V6 engine, but the 5.3L engine is an available upgrade. Like all Chevy trucks, the Silverado 1500 WT comes standard with GM’s signature CornerStep rear bumper, which is a textured step pad located on both sides of the truck bed, and it makes it easier for people to get in and out of the truck bed. The Silverado 1500 WT also comes standard with solar-absorbing glass, cab-mounted cargo area lamps, daytime running lights and 17-inch steel wheels.

Even though the Silverado 1500 WT is the base trim, Chevy still believes in the importance of equipping their vehicle with modern tech features, so the Silverado 1500 WT comes standard with a 7-inch color touch screen, Bluetooth, a six-speaker audio system and Chevy MyLink, which is Chevy’s name brand infotainment system. Since the Silverado 1500 WT is built for business and work, the crew cab and double cab configurations have a 40/20/40 front split-bench seat, so there is room for six passengers, which is helpful on days where an extra person is needed at the job site. The Silverado 1500 WT is equipped with a rubberized vinyl floor covering, which protects the floor from dirt and is also easy to clean.

Silverado 1500 LS/ LT

The Silverado 1500 LS and LT trims are a step above the Silverado 1500 WT, so it has some additional standard features, but it comes standard with the 4.3L V6 engine and the 5.3L V8 engine is an available option. The Silverado 1500 LS and LT trims are available in all three cab sizes and with all three truck beds, however, the LT is available as the 1LT or 2LT (also referred to as LT L71) and 2LT trims are only available with 4WD, but 1LT trims are available with 2WD or 4WD. Like the Silverado WT, the Silverado LS is equipped with Chevy MyLink, a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth and a six-speaker system, however it also features remote keyless entry, a feature that is not available on the Silverado 1500 WT. The Silverado LT is equipped with a larger 8-inch touchscreen. For maximum seating options, the Silverado 1500 LS and LT features the same 40/20/40 front split-bench seat that provides seating for up to six passengers.

The exterior of the Silverado LS and LT includes the CornerStep bumpers, and it has chrome front and rear bumpers, which is an upgrade in comparison to the black front and rear bumpers that are on the Silverado 1500 WT. The Silverado 1500 LT is equipped with 17-inch bright machined aluminum wheels and the Silverado LS has 17-inch stainless-steel clad wheels.

Silverado 1500 Custom

The Chevy Silverado 1500 Custom is only available with the four-door cab options, the crew cab or double cab, and double cab is only available with a short box and the crew cab is available with a short box or standard box. Like the Silverado 1500 WT, LT and LS trims, the Silverado 1500 Custom comes standard with a 4.3L V6 engine, but the 5.3L V8 engine is an available upgrade. The Silverado 1500 Custom comes standard with deep-tinted rear glass, heated and power-adjustable exterior mirrors and two front recovery hooks. The Custom truck trim comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen, HD radio and Chevy MyLink, Bluetooth and a six-speaker audio system.

Silverado 1500 LTZ

Like the Silverado LT, which is available with two variations, the LTZ is available as the 1LTZ or a 2LTZ (also referred to as the LTZ Z71) and the 1LTZ is available with 2WD or 4WD and the 2LTZ is only available with 4WD. The Silverado LTZ comes standard with the 355-horsepower 5.3L V8 engine and the 6.2L V8 engine is an available upgrade. In addition to having chrome front and rear bumpers and recovery hooks, the Silverado 1500 LTZ is equipped with fog lights, rear wheel house liners, and the EX-Lift and Lower tailgate, which makes it much easier to open and close the tailgate and also includes a locking feature.

The Silverado 1500 LTZ has a couple interior features that aren’t available on the previous Silverado 1500 trims. In addition to all of the standard interior features on the Silverado 1500 Custom, the Silverado 1500 LTZ features SiriusXM satellite radio, floor carpeting, driver and front passenger heated seats, as well as leather seats.

Silverado 1500 High Country

The Chevy Silverado 1500 High Country trim is the most luxurious trim of all the Silverado 1500 trims. The Silverado 1500 High Country is only available with the crew cab configuration and it comes standard with the 5.3L V8 engine, but the 6.2L V8 engine is an available option. In addition to all of the features on the Silverado 1500 LTZ, the Silverado 1500 High Country trim comes standard with the trailering package, 20-inch chrome wheels and all-season tires. The Silverado 1500 High Country has a more distinct look than other Silverado 1500 trims because it has a different grille design that is a shiny chrome. For ultimate comfort and convenience, the Silverado 1500 High Country has leather seating and the front seats are two bucket seats rather than the three-passenger front bench seat. The steering wheel and front seats are heated and there are convenient audio and radio controls on the steering wheels. The vehicle also has an upgraded Bose sound system as well as front and rear floor carpet and carpeted mats.

AirBnB For Car Owners? GM Aims To Expand Their Maven App

If you’ve ever thought about renting out your current vehicle while you’re away on vacation or not going to be around to use your vehicle, you’re not alone. GM vehicles are about to be in the car-owner, car-rental business at some point this summer as they GM expands their Maven app program to a large audience.

Who Is This Maven and What Does It Do?

Maven is a program that allows GM owners to rent out their vehicle. According to Bloomberg news reports, a top-notch campaign is being assembled to promote this program further. Already established as Maven, the company provides users the ability to have rent vehicles out to drivers at $8 an hour plus tax from other users. Drivers simply use the Maven app that’s available on iOS and Android markets to enjoy the perks of renting out whichever car is around and allows two distinct features.

Two Choices For Maven Members

Maven Gig lets users rent out their vehicle for ride sharing and delivery driving or Maven Sharing can be selected to ride around for personal use. Simply, download the app, choose your car and drive away. The only catch is you’ll have to return the vehicle to location you picked up the vehicle.

Four vehicle types exist from Eco, Compact Sedan and SUV. This groundbreaking mobility program is already changing the industry of what could be next to follow for widespread appeal for other companies to get involved. Originally starting in Ann Arbor, Michigan back at the start of 2016, this was a great idea to expand the use of vehicle usage and help owners make some money on the side while renting out vehicles they weren’t using. Costs like fuel, parking, insurance and maintenance all go into account as well.

Who Can Use Maven?

Maven users must be 18 years or older, apply to be approved as an official Maven member, possess a valid U.S. state issued driver’s license that isn’t suspended, and meet additional eligibility requirements. With turn around times as short as two business days, owners and drivers can become a Maven member in no time. This program has been expanding outside of Michigan and will look to become a full fledged part of the modern world. It’s no longer weird to stay at someone’s condo or house, as it’s no longer to rent out their vehicle. Welcome to the 21st century!

If you’ve wanted to experience driving a new vehicle and have wanted to Uber, but didn’t want to drive around your city, you can now allow Maven to be your side money making this summer. Of course, if you don’t want to rent out your vehicle for any reason we will still recommend one place to get your vehicle.

Chevy Debuts New Commercial-Duty Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, 6500HD

Chevrolet Unveils the 2019 Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD a

As Chevy said they’d do, Chevy debuted the new Chevy Silverado medium-duty truck at the Work Truck Show in early March, but Chevy kept a secret until its debut. Originally the new medium-duty Silverado lineup was only going to include the Class 4 (Silverado 4500HD) and Class 5 (Silverado 550HD) truck, but now we know that Chevy will also make a Class 6 (Silverado 6500 HD) truck as well.

Chevy’s expansion into medium-duty trucks is not entirely new for the automaker. Before 2009 Chevy offered medium-duty trucks, but they paused production on that until now, and Chevy intends to come back strong, and competitors like Ford and Ram will definitely have new competition.

According to an article published by Automotive News, “GM executives, however, believe the Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD are differentiated enough from the competition to eventually gain upward of a 25 to 30 percent share of the medium-duty truck segment, matching pre-bankruptcy levels.”

The inspiration behind the design of the new trucks came from listening to the needs and wants of the people that will be using and working with the trucks, including fleet managers, truck drivers, upfitters, technicians and Chevrolet dealers.

The new Silverado 4500HD, Silverado 550HD and Silverado 6500HD will be equipped with a  6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine that produces 350 horsepower and 700 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine will be paired to an Allison transmission with a Power Take Off (PTO) option and the trucks will be available in two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive.

“When you consider all of the flexibility, capability and durability we have engineered into the Silverado, along with the proven power of Allison transmissions and the Duramax diesel engine, we have a medium duty truck line that will appeal to both Chevrolet loyalists and competitive owners alike,” said John Schwegman, director of Commercial Product and Medium Duty at GM Fleet.

In addition to offering solutions to problems dealers and drivers have experienced with other commercial trucks, Chevy has also made technology a big focus. The new commercial Silverado trucks will be available with OnStar and Commercial Link, a built-in 4GLTE Wi-Fi hotspot (paid data plan required), wireless cellphone charging, Bluetooth and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Chevy says production of the new fleet will begin in late 2018 and pricing will be announced this summer.

Chevy Silverado 1500 Engine Options and Towing Capacities

The biggest reasons people buy trucks like the light-duty Chevy Silverado 1500 is for the convenience of transporting large objects in the truck bed and towing abilities. While truck bed options are pretty straight forward, there are a lot of things that consumers don’t realize affect a truck’s towing capacity.

A truck’s powertrain is the most dominant factor when it comes to towing capacity. A truck’s engine and transmission produce the horsepower and torque, which are the biggest factors in how much weight a truck is able to tow. The Chevy Silverado 1500 is available with three engines:

4.3-liter EcoTec3 V6 engine

285 horsepower / 305 lb-ft of torque
Hyrda-Matic 6-speed automatic transmission
Max Towing Capacity: 7,600 pounds

5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine

355 horsepower / 383 lb-ft of torque
Hyrda-Matic 6-speed automatic transmission or Hyrda-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission
Max Towing Capacity: 9,800 pounds (without Max. Trailering Package)

6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine

420 horsepower / 460 lb-ft of torque
Hyrda-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission
Max Towing Capacity: 9,400 pounds (without Max. Trailering Package)

However, not all Chevy Silverado 1500 models with the same engine and transmission that produce the same amount of horsepower and torque can tow the same amount and that’s due to the overall weight of the truck (truck cab and other equipment), as well as the truck’s axle ratio.

That’s because the power (horsepower and torque) a truck produces has a maximum amount of work (in this case towing capacity) that is can do, and that amount of work changes based on the truck’s weight. The more a truck weighs, the less it will be able to tow.

The weight of a truck varies based on the size of the truck cab as well as the other equipment on the truck. Trucks that are equipped with four-wheel-drive typically have a lower towing capacity (typically less than a couple hundred pounds) than trucks with two-wheel-drive because the extra equipment needed to transfer Miami-Lakes-Chevy-Silverado-1500-trailer-tow-guidetorque to all four wheels, or in other words, the four-wheel-drive equipment, adds weight to the truck, and that weight takes away from the amount of weight a truck can tow. The same thing applies to other equipment that may be on a truck like audio systems, seating materials and interior features.

Axle Ratio

Aside from the power an engine produces, a truck’s towing capacity is also affected by a truck’s axle ratio. Typically, higher axle ratios deliver more torque to the wheels, which increases the amount of pulling power. However, higher axle ratios also decrease a vehicle’s fuel economy, so it’s important to determine how much pulling power you actually need.

The Chevy Silverado 1500 is available with a few different axle ratios. The standard axle ratios include a 3.08, 3.23, 3.42, and the 5.3-liter V6 engine and 6.2-liter V8 engine are both available with a Max. Trailering Package that includes a 3.73 axle ratio.

When the Chevy Silverado 1500 is equipped with a 5.3L engine and the Max. Trailering Package it has a max towing capacity of 11,000 pounds (1,700 pounds more than the standard max towing capacity) and when the Chevy Silverado 1500 is equipped with a 6.2L engine and the Max. Trailering Package it has a max towing capacity of 12,500 pounds (3,100 pounds more than the standard max towing capacity).
