9 Things You Didn't Know About the Chrysler 300
The Chrysler 300 has earned quite a reputation throughout its many year's as a member of the brand's lineup. When it was first introduced in 2005, it received extremely high praise for its refinement and impressive capabilities.
Over the years, it has become better and better. Its appearance has remained classic but has also been enhanced by modern styling cues.
And Chrysler has consistently kept the model up-to-date with cutting-edge technology and advanced mechanical systems in the 2015 Chrysler 300.
Most people already know Chrysler's flagship sedan as a leader in affordable luxury, but here are a few things you may not know about the acclaimed 300.
The Name Was Used Before
The original Chrysler 300 was introduced in 1962 and only lasted for two years. It was produced in many forms including convertible, hardtop, and sedan styles.
It replaced a model called the Windsor and gave buyers great style at a very reasonable price. The 300s of the '60s weren't the most famous Chryslers of all time, but, especially due to their short production run, they are fairly valuable today.
Models with the optional bucket seats or special edition characteristics like the black leather interior or exclusive silver finish are quite rare.
It's Rear-Wheel Drive with an AWD Option
One thing that makes today's Chrysler 300 so unique is that it's a rear-wheel drive car that's also offered with all-wheel drive.
It's designed for people who are looking for something a bit more engaging than your typical sedan. Rear-wheel drive allows the 300 to accelerate more quickly, and it gives the car better handling.
Many drivers also opt for a new or used Chrysler 300 with all-wheel drive because they like to have added control when the roads are wet or slippery.
A Wagon Variant was Produced for Europe and Australia
Consumers in Europe and Australia had the choice of purchasing the 300C as either a sedan or station wagon.
The base 300 trim was not offered in Europe, and all models sported the added features of the upscale 300C with a choice of a V6 or V8 engine.
However, the station wagon option didn't last long. It was canceled after the first generation, and 300s are now only available as sedans. However, they go by a different name in Europe and are called Lancia Themas.
Overseas, You Can Get it With Diesel
Though diesel has only recently regained some ground in the U.S., it has been a much more widely accepted fuel source in other countries for years.
In Europe and Australia, a Chrysler 300C with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine can get up to 239 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Diesel-powered 300s also have combined fuel economy ratings of 30 miles per gallon or more.
In recent years, American car enthusiasts have wondered if the 300s on this side of the pond might one day get a diesel option, but there has been no movement in that direction yet.
It Was Designed by Chrysler Legend Ralph Gilles
Ralph Gilles, the current President and CEO of SRT and Senior Vice President of Design at Chrysler, was the innovator behind the development of the 300.
It was his experience and creativity that drove the style behind Chrysler's luxurious 300 which debuted in the mid 2000s.
He went on to craft other renowned vehicles like the 2014 SRT Viper and is revered for his powerful insight when it comes to automotive design.
Received Motor Trend's Car of the Year Award in 2005
When it was introduced into the market, the Chrysler 300 racked up a slew of awards thanks to its luxurious design, bold performance, and quality build.
Motor Trend named it Car of the Year in 2005 and it was also on Car and Driver's Ten Best List in both 2005 and 2006.
In addition ,it collected a number of honors outside the U.S.; Canada even awarded the 300 the title of Best New Luxury Car. It certainly made quite an entrance.
There's an SRT Version

Chrysler Offered a 300 Motown Edition
The 300 Motown Edition was a tip-of-the-hat to Motown music, and the exclusive sedan was filled with an array of features inspired by the genre.
High end chrome wheels and special Motown Edition badges made the exterior stand out. And inside, a ten-speaker Beats by Dr. Dre sound system with a USB drive preloaded with 100 Motown songs enhanced the atmosphere.
Released in 2013, the limited edition 300 was promoted in an ad featuring Berry Gordy, the legendary father of Motown himself. The line in the commercial was: "This is Motown. And this is what we do."
It Was Just Refreshed for 2015
Though it's not quite time for a new generation of 300s yet, Chrysler gave their flagship sedan a significant facelift this year to make sure it has all of the features consumers are looking for.
The list of safety features includes:

- Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist
- ParkView Rear Back Up Camera
Several other convenience and entertainment features became part of the package as well. The 300 is equipped with Chrysler's highly praised Uconnect system which offers Bluetooth, voice command, 3D navigation, HD radio, and more.
The 300 also has a 7-inch customizable Driver Information Display behind the wheel to provide drivers with valuable details about their vehicle's performance.
