2019 Jeep Wrangler

When the Jeep brand introduced the all-new JL-generation Wrangler at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show it felt as if Jeep had finally combined the best of both worlds, delivering a vehicle that’s capable and functional all at once. For the 2019 model year, advanced safety features such as forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control are now standard among others.

Engine Type

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL offers two different models: a two-door model and a four-door model, with the two-door Wrangler consisting of three trims - Sport, Sport S, and Rubicon. Four-door Wrangler vehicles offer the same trims plus an additional high-tier and luxury-oriented Sahara trim. A 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine powers all Wrangler vehicles and is capable of generating 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. In an interesting twist, the Pentastar is also outfitted with the automaker’s eTorque mild-hybrid system that serves to conserve and improve fuel economy. A six-speed manual transmission is the standard and it yields 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. There’s also an available class-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission that increases fuel economy by 1 mpg.

High-tier trims have the option to upgrade to a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine - it can only be mated to the eight-speed automatic transmission and generates 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The aforementioned eTorque system is available for pairing with this engine choice as well and adds features such as extended fuel shut-off, electric power assist, intelligent battery charging, and regenerative braking.

Driving and Handling

All Wrangler vehicles are designed to be off-road capable regardless of the model or trim with a ground clearance of 10.9 inches, water fording capability up to 30 inches, and a standard crawl ratio of 2.71:1. There’s even an available towing package which increases the Wrangler’s towing capacity up to 3,500 pounds.

Jeepers looking to go off-roading can rest assured that the JL-generation Wrangler comes equipped with the best 4x4 system Jeep can offer. The Command-Trac 4x4 system that offers a 2.72:1 crawl ratio and is capable of conquering even the roughest terrain comes standard on the Sport, Sport S, and Sahara trims. The Wrangler Rubicon is the lineup’s off-road starlet and it comes standard with the Rock-Trac 4x4 system complete with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1, skid plates, front and rear tow hooks, and Tru-Lok differentials. Those looking to push the envelope a little more can opt for 17-inch off-road wheels and rear steel heavy-duty off-road winch-ready bumpers.

Style

Exterior Features

The heritage and iconic style of the Jeep Wrangler remains intact.  Improvements in aerodynamics come from an overall weight reduction of 200 pounds - the hood, doors, and windshield frame are now made of a lightweight, heavy-duty aluminum and steel strength. Furthermore, the top of the iconic seven-slot grille is swept back to improve aerodynamics as well to soften the Wrangler’s rugged wide stance.

LED headlamps, LED turn signals, and LED taillamps are available on the Sahara and Rubicon trims, but the most innovative feature introduced by Jeep is the Sky One-Touch powertop that’s able to retract the full length of the roof with the simple push of a button - just like a convertible! However, unlike convertibles, this power soft top is able to function even while the SUV is in motion at 60 mph. An all-new premium Sunrider soft top does away with the traditional window and back windshield zippers and replaces the joints with a sliding track mechanism for easy removal and retrieval. The hardtop option is still available and comes in three pieces including the removable freedom panels.  Unlike the last-generation Wrangler, this hardtop offers new and improved latches that make hardtop removal faster than before.

Interior Features

On the inside, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler remains true to its iconically rugged style in terms of looks, but this time it offers much more comfort and high-quality materials. Front-seat passengers can enjoy a center stack with functional features such as climate and volume control knobs, connectivity ports, and an Engine Stop-Start (ESS) button easily within their reach.

Cloth upholstery is standard in the cabin, but leather-contoured seats are offered on the higher-tier trims like the Sahara and Rubicon. Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and automatic climate control make up the comfort features available as upgrades. There’s a 7-inch touchscreen display that lets drivers configure information in more than 100 ways, while the controls for audio, voice, and cruise control are mounted on the steering wheel for. The inside of the Wrangler is water-resistant, so drivers don’t have to worry about damage if they get caught in the rain with the top off, or if they’re forced to hose out the interior after an exceptionally adventurous off-road trip. The Wrangler is outfitted with drain plugs should owners have the need to do this.
