Avail. Highway Fuel Economy
When it comes to the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu, the powertrain from the 2018 model returns. Made up of two options, consumers will find a 1.5-liter DOHC turbocharged engine with direct-injection and variable valve timing (VVT) technology on all trims but the Premier. Made up of five trims (L, LS, RS, LT, and Premier) that’s four vehicles able to generate 163 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. In contrast, powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC turbocharged engine, also optimized with gasoline direct-injection and VVT, this engine can deliver up to 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.
Driving and Handling
Just like the engine, four of the five trims have the engine paired to a continuously variable transmission. Able to seamlessly change gears, this transmission offers the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu 36 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg in the city. On the other hand, with the Premier powered by the larger turbocharged engine, it is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission that offers a fuel economy of 32/22 mpg city/highway.
When it comes to style, Chevrolet tends to save the best features for the high-end Premier trim. These consist of IntelliBeam high beam assist, heated exterior mirrors with turn signal indicators, and the option to add a dual pane power sliding sunroof (also available on the LT). There are some nice standard features, however, such as automatic on/off headlights and laminated acoustic glass. A lot of the options are up to the consumers, with select trims able to add on packages, such as an appearance package for gloss black exterior mirrors and a dark chrome grille, or premier sun and wheel package for the sunroof, a universal home remote, and 19-inch aluminum wheels with all-season blackwall tires. Wheel sizes range from 16-inch 19-inch, depending on the trim.
With premium cloth upholstery available for the majority of the lineup, leather trim is saved for the LT and Premier trims. Consumers can find other nice features, including a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated driver and front passenger seats in the Premier trim. Some convenient features are standard across the lineup, such as keyless entry and start, a rear 60/40 split-fold bench and steering-wheel-mounted audio and phone controls. Again, packages are the real way to optimize the cabin, with features like a cargo net, all-weather floor mats, and portable media connectivity.
Technology sees the most changes for the 2019 model year of the Chevy Malibu. A simple AM/FM stereo with a 6-speaker system is still the standard, with a Bose 9-speaker premium audio system on the premier, but the infotainment system is new. Chevrolet MyLink no more, the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 comes standard across the lineup, presented on an 8-inch color touchscreen, and offering Bluetooth audio streaming, voice commands, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. An HD color screen with navigation and cloud synchronization are available for the Premier trim. A 4G LTE Wi-Fi® hotspot can be added to all but the L trim.
Safety Features and Warranty
The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu is just as strong as its predecessors in safety, outfitted with ten airbags, traction, and stability control systems, the LATCH anchor system for child seats, a rear vision camera, and OnStar® & Chevrolet Connected Services. Select trims may come with advanced safety features, including following distance indicator, forward collision alert, front automatic parking assist, lane keep assist, and side blind zone alert with lane change alert.
