2018 Kia Optima

The Kia Optima was probably a gold mine for Kia Motors when it first released. It only took a few years for Kia Motors to expand the Kia Optima lineup by adding a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid version of the vehicle. All three are available at Miami Lakes Automall, and here’s a look at the original variation, the 2018 Kia Optima.

Engine Types

There are five trims that make up the 2018 Kia Optima lineup - LX, S, LX 1.6T, EX, and SX. Three engines are available, depending on the trim. The base trim, Optima S, and the Optima EX trims come standard with a 2.4-liter DOHC I4 engine. Second most powerful in the lineup, this engine is capable of generating 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. If looking for a little less horsepower but still good fuel economy, the trend started with the Kia Optima, offering a 1.6-liter  turbocharged DOHC I4 engine, standard on the Optima LX 1.6T only. This turbocharged 1.6-liter generates 178 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. The most powerful engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged DOHC I4 engine - only found on the Kia Optima SX, this engine is capable of generating 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

One may notice that all engines are built with a Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC). This is one of several designs used in the Kia Optima engines to improve their performance and fuel economy. Designed with dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) technology, each engine is optimized to alter the timing of a cylinder’s valve lift events when intaking air and gas and exhausting the resulting fumes. A DOHC design makes this process easier by splitting the work between two routes in each cylinder versus crowding it all through one. All engines also receive fuel via gasoline direct injection, the process of delivering highly-pressurized fuel directly into an engine’s combustion chamber via its fuel line.

Driving and Handling

All 2018 Kia Optima trims except for the Optima LX 1.6T have a 6-speed automatic transmission paired up with their engine. Fuel economy changes between engines however, as well as the trim. The base trim has a fuel economy of 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. The other trims powered by the 2.4-liter engine get about 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. That leaves the Optima LX 1.6T and the SX trims, with the latter getting 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Powered by the 1.6-liter turbo engine, the Optima LX 1.6T has a fuel economy of 28/37 mpg city/highway. In contrast to the rest of the lineup, the Optima LX 1.6T is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. All transmissions however are known as a Sportmatic Sports Shifter. This means the driver may shift gears as they wish with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Otherwise, the automatic transmission will do its job as designed.

Exterior Features

The 2018 Kia Optima has the same style as its previous model, and for those curious about standard features, a handful of great features are standard across the lineup. These consist of power-adjustable heated exterior mirrors with LED turn signal indicators, solar control glass to keep the cabin from heating up, sound-absorbing front windows (optional on the Optima LX base trim), automatic on/off headlights, and chrome exhaust tips. If looking for more style, consumers can find a sporty front grille and front bumper with chrome accents on the Optima S trim, optional on the Optima EX trim, or chrome exterior accents as an option on the Optima SX (standard in black). The Optima S trim and SX trim can also come with a rear spoiler.

Convenient features like Smart Welcome that lights up in proximity to the key fob and Smart Trunk that opens in the presence of the key fob can be found on the Optima EX and SX trims. The Optima SX trim also comes with a panoramic sunroof with power sunshade, but this feature is only an upgradeable option for the Optima S and EX trims. All trims can come in Snow White Pearl Premium paint, but only the LX can get the aurora black premium color paint job. 2018 Kia Optima trims ride on either 16-, 17-, or 18-inch alloy wheels.

Interior Features

Like the exterior, the interior of the 2018 Kia Optima shares many great features that add comfort and convenience. Of course, consumers may not find leather upholstery on low-tier trims, (available on the EX and SX), but a 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat comes standard for various seating configurations when needing cargo space (up to 15.9 cubic-feet). The Optima LX trim comes with an 8-way adjustable drivers seat, but can trade up for a 10-way adjustable seat, standard on the Optima S and LX 1.6T. The Optima EX and SX trims come with a 12-way power adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats. Ventilated front seats and heated rear seats are available on the Optima EX and SX trims as well. All but the base trim come with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; the Optima SX trim also has the option to upgrade to a heated steering wheel.

When looking for convenience, consumers will find it on nearly any 2018 Kia Optima trim. All trims come with an active Eco system to monitor driving habits and fuel economy, drive mode select to change how the vehicle responds, and a day/night mirror. Select trims come with dual-zone automatic temperature control, LED interior lighting, rear side-window sunshades, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
