2018 Chevy Volt

The Chevy Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that was introduced in 2011 and it entered its second generation in 2015 and that’s the design the Volt has for the 2018 model year. According to Chevy, Volt owners have driven more than 650 million EV miles, saved 34 million gallons of gas and more than 80 percent of the time drivers are driving in electric mode.

The 2018 Chevy Volt is not only impressive for its fuel economy, but it is also a 2018 I.I.H.S Top Safety Pick and it was named Green Car of the Year by the Green Car Journal in 2011 and 2016, only to be surpassed by another Chevy model, the all-new Chevy Bolt EV in 2017. In addition to the savings buyers can expect at the fuel pump, the 2018 Chevy Volt qualifies for a significant federal tax credit as well as some state incentives, too.

2018 Chevy Volt Performance

Powertrain + Fuel Economy

Powertrain

The 2018 Chevy Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), so it can be powered by its battery, its gasoline engine or in hybrid mode, which is a combination of the battery and gas engine working together.

There are two Chevy Volt trims, the LT and the Premier, and they are both equipped with the same powertrain system. The Volt EV’s gas engine is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and it is referred to as a range extender engine because it powers the vehicle after the battery has been depleted. The Chevy Volt’s electric powertrain is a two-motor drive unit that is powered by an 18.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. The electric battery produces up to 149 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel Economy

The Chevy Volt is one of the best PHEVs on the market and it has an excellent fuel economy. Since the Volt is a PHEV, it has a couple different fuel economies. When the Volt is only powered by its battery, it has a total driving range of 53 miles and all of those 53 miles are driven without releasing any tailpipe emissions. When the Volt is powered by only its gas engine it has a combined city/highway fuel economy of 42 mpg and when the Volt is in hybrid mode (powered by battery and gas engine), it has a combined city/highway fuel economy of 106 MPGe. With a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery, the Chevy Volt has a total driving distance of 420 miles.

Fuel Savings + Charging

Thanks to the Chevy Volt’s fantastic fuel economy, drivers can expect to save a lot of money in fuel costs. Fueleconomy.gov estimates that the average driver of the Chevy Volt spends about $700 per year in fuel costs and the site estimates the average driver will save $3,500 in fuel costs in five years in comparison to the average vehicle.

The Chevy Volt can be charged with a 120-volt charger or a 120-volt charger. 120-volt chargers are the most common outlets found in homes, but 240-volt outlets can be installed. The Chevy Volt can be recharged in about 13 hours when using a 120-volt charger or 4.5 hours when using a 240-volt charger.

Since PHEVs are very quiet vehicles, to ensure the vehicle is noticeable to drivers at night Volt has LED lights all around the vehicle including LED tail lights, LED daytime running headlights and an LED stop brake that is mounted high and in the center of the rear of the vehicle. The Volt LT rides on 17-inch five-spoke painted aluminum wheels and the Volt Premier rides on 17-inch five-spoke ultra-bright painted wheels.
