2018 Chevrolet Equinox
Chevy made the 2017 Chevy Equinox a prime design, but the 2018 is already available, and it’s actually an improvement on its 2017 counterpart. It’s like they released the 2017 model halfway finished, because even more features come standard and available on the 2018 Chevy Equinox.
Avail. Engine Type
Initially only one engine was available, a 1.5-liter turbo engine with VVT that generates 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. Two more engines were introduced though - a 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine and a 252-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo engine. Chevy’s not the kind of one-engine-fits-all auto brand. If you noticed that odd acronym, VVT, it stands for “variable valve timing”, a technology implemented to increase the efficiency of air/fuel intake/exhaust in an engine’s cylinders.
Technology like VVT can greatly increase the power and fuel economy of a vehicle if done right. The 2018 Chevy Equinox standard 1.6-liter engine gets 31 mpg on the highway, and the 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine gets 40 mpg on the highway. The fuel economy estimate for the 2.0-liter turbo engine has yet to be released.
Transmission and Towing
The standard transmission for the 2018 Chevy Equinox is a 6-speed automatic transmission, currently only paired to the 1.6-liter engine. It’s unclear whether the turbo-diesel engine will get the same. The 2.0-liter turbo engine on the other hand is paired with an all-new 9-speed automatic transmission.
The 2018 Chevy Equinox produces 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque when the Equinox is equipped with the 2.0-liter turbo engine, and its increase in torque also increases the Equinox’s towing power. With 260 lb-ft of torque, the Equinox has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds with the 2.0-liter turbo engine. That’s enough for a small boat or several jet skis - what a coincidence this engine is made available in the summer.
The exterior on the 2018 Chevy Equinox has been upgraded. Most of the lineup has an acoustic windshield and some form of solar-absorbing glass; the Equinox Premier does not have the latter, but instead has deep-tinted rear windows. Halogen headlamps are the standard, but HID headlamps are available, and LED headlamps and tail lamps can be found on the Equinox Premier. Some variation of power adjustable heated mirrors is a lineup standard.
Several packages are available for the exterior of the 2018 Equinox. Roof rack cross rails, rear splash guards, and a keyless entry keypad packages are available, to name a few. This year, 17-, 18-, and 19-inch wheels are available depending on the trim. Most models also have a 16-inch compact spare tire.
Wondering if the interior is as good as the exterior? We can tell you it has its own set of packages, such as universal tablet holders, all-weather floor matting, cargo accessories, and an interior protection package. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning and heated driver and front passenger seats are available on select trims. On the Equinox Premier, the driver seat has 8-way power adjustment features, and buyers have the option for an 8-way power feature on the passenger seat, too.
Other available luxuries consist of ventilated driver and passenger seats, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated outboard seats for keeping all five passengers in the cabin warm. Keyless entry is a lineup standard for easy-access. A split-folding rear seat is also a standard across the lineup.
Depending on the trim, the cabin will have a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, the latter with GPS navigation available. All trims will get Chevrolet MyLink for audio streaming capabilities such as Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. Varying on the trim, the 2018 Chevy Equinox becomes a 4G LTE Wi-FI hotspot for up to seven devices. There are also packages for technology, consisting of a Sun and Infotainment package that offers a sunroof, and a Sun, Sound, and Navigation package that comes with a Bose 7-speaker sound system.
Safety Features and Warranty
The 2018 Chevy Equinox comes with all the safety features of the 2017 model and then some. Standard features are an advanced dual stage airbag system, a remote panic alarm, child security rear door locks, LED daytime running lamps, a rear view camera, traction and stability control systems, a Teen Driver mode, and many OnStar vehicle systems for emergency and roadside assistance services. Optional features are a safety seat alert, remote start system, forward collision alert, a forward distance indicator, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and low speed forward automatic braking.
All new Chevrolet vehicles are backed by a three-year or 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and a 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty (100,000 miles for qualified fleet purchases). Additionally, the vehicle’s exterior is protected by a 3-year or 36,000-mile corrosion warranty, 6-year or 100,000-mile rust-through warranty, buyers receive complimentary roadside assistance for 5 years or 60,000 miles. There is also a 2-year scheduled maintenance plan, standard.
