2016 Kia Optima

The tagline for the Kia Optima is “Not your average mid-size sedan.” The 2016 model looks a lot like the 2015 vehicle,  and underneath its classy and stylish exterior is new technology, features, and a comfortable interior.

Not only is the inside of the Kia Optima an upgrade, but with the new engine and suspension, the Optima is a sedan that’s actually fun to drive. Many of us have a car to get us around town, but having a good time in one’s car is something different altogether. Now take that into account when discussing the fact that the Kia Optima is a family sedan.

A picture is taking shape - an affordable, modern sedan, for family and/or friends, with a roomy interior and all that good stuff. With all the awards, praise it has received and all the improvements the Kia Optima has made over its older models, there really isn’t a reason to not want one. There are 5 different trims, so without further ado, let’s take a look at the Kia Optima SX series.

Engine Options

The standard engine for the Kia Optima is a 2.4L DOHC 16-valve I-4. However, the Kia Optima SX and SWX Limited are equipped with a 2.0L DOHC 16-valve I-4 engine with turbocharger.

“DOHC” stands for “Double Overhead Cam”, which means there are two camshafts controlling the air intake and exhaust of the engine. A car with a DOHC out-performs a car with a single overhead camshaft, and when taking that into account, the horsepower of the Kia Optima SX is 245-hp with 260lb-ft of torque.

An engine with a turbocharger basically has a turbine-driven device that increases the internal combustion of an engine and its power output by forcing extra air into the combustion chamber at a much higher rate than a naturally aspirated engine. This can significantly increase horsepower in many cases.

Transmission and Drivability

The SX series gets the standard 6-speed automatic transmission with a Sportmatic Sports Shifter. “Sportmatic” is a type of transmissions with paddle-shifters. Paddle-shifters in transmission tend to reflect some of the key benefits of manual transmission such as increasing fuel economy while seamlessly switching between gears like automatic transmission.

Most of the trims get this transmission except for the LX 1.6T which has a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The SX series and SX limited are the only ones with the sport-tuned suspension. This is where the Kia Optima gets its thrill from. A sport-tuned transmission lets the driver feel the road, as if they’re racing through the streets.

Fuel Economy

Driver’s of the Kia Optima SX will enjoy the vehicles excellent fuel economy. The Optima SX gets an average of 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg when on the highway.

Sporty Body

The Optima SX series has a sports front grille in dark metallic paint with satin chrome bumpers in the front and rear and a rear spoiler. This trim is also the only one with the option of a satin chrome side fender garnish. All trims have solar control glass to reduce heat buildup and protect passengers from UV rays. The exterior mirrors are heated to avoid fogging, and come with LED turn signal indicators.

A convenient feature in case it's dark out, is the Optima SX’s driver sensory capabilities. When the key fob is within range, the Kia Optima SX has a system that unfolds the vehicle’s exterior mirrors and turns on the door pocket lights. A sunroof is not standard but is an available option.

The Kia Optima SX rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with a machined finish, though the launch edition is an option. They wheels are fitted with 235/45R18 tires. A space-saver spare tire is included, replacing the need for a tire mobility kit.

Luxurious, Convenient Interior

As one of the nicer Optima trims, the Kia Optima SX is equipped with many luxury elements. The vehicle’s front seats are heated and buyers have the option of heated and ventilated seats in the back. The interior seats are covered in a comfortable sport leather trim.

The driver’s seat is fully adjustable, with 12-way power adjustment and 4-way lumbar support. A driver’s seat integrated memory system comes standard to keep driver preferences in tact if another driver takes the helm, and for storage, the rear seat has a 60/40 split with center armrest.

Being an eco-friendly auto brand, Kia has included “Drive Mode Select” and the “Active Eco System” in the Kia Optima so drivers can choose their driving style while still optimizing their fuel economy. A 4.3-inch color LCD display with a trip computer is integrated into the dashboard, along with all the other great gadgets.

It also scored among the top three vehicles for various classes, including: the small SUV class; the midsize SUV class; the small car class; the compact MPV Class; and the compact car class.

Many safety tech options are available with the SX series and other trims of the Kia Optima.
