2016 Chevy Cruze - Miami, FL

The second generation 2016 Chevy Cruze recently hit dealer lots, and a lot has changed. Now, the design is more aerodynamic and athletic and has somehow also grown significantly larger while dropping some weight. A new turbocharged 1.4-liter engine is the standard (and only) engine choice and has received glowing praise about its stellar performance and efficiency. Lastly, the technology on the MyLink display has been updated, and now functions smoothly, with more versatility for Android and iPhone users. And don’t worry, it still retains all the same great technology features from the previous generation.

The Cruze quickly became one of Chevy’s most popular vehicles, and with the improvements to the second generation model, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the sales increase even more.

In an engineering conundrum, the second generation 2016 Chevy Cruze somehow got both larger and lighter. The wheelbase is up from the previous generation and now sits at 106.3 inches between the front and rear axles, as opposed to 105.7 inches, which is quite a jump in space for just one year. Apart from getting a longer wheel base, the Cruze also shed 250 pounds, which is also a lot for just one year of redesigning. In the end, the wheelbase creates a longer vehicle — the overall length up to 183.7 inches from 181 inches — with the longer wheelbase increasing the rear legroom inside the cabin by about a half-inch. The reduced weight, obviously, supports the increase in fuel economy. Combined, this means the new Cruze is larger, lighter, and more fuel-efficient than its predecessor.

The elongated body also positions it one-inch lower to the ground than before, which helps with the aerodynamics and fuel economy. Apart from being more aerodynamically-oriented, the looks of the Cruze have also changed with this generation. The chiseled lines and sharp edges that have been added no doubt aid with the aerodynamics, but also create a Cruze that has a new look to it. Now, this sleek and sharp vehicle looks much more athletic than before and is surprisingly intimidating for a compact sedan. The front-fascia matches the rest of the design: edgy and windswept. Now, the headlights and split-grille look peeled-back and the raised center line appear much sharper than before.

Another dazzling optical effect of the Cruze is its ability to always look like it’s traveling at high-speeds. Even when parked, it looks like a sharpened and balanced dagger thrown through the wind at high-speed.

The exterior isn’t the only thing that was made more efficient, either; the Cruze also offers a new spirited and efficient turbocharged engine. Chevy apparently decided that the 1.8-liter engine wasn’t worthy for the new generation. Honestly, we don’t mind. It was a good engine, but left a hole where power should be. Now, the refined 1.4-liter engine with turbocharging technology is able to provide that spritely performance that so many craved in a compact car, while providing more efficiency than the previous engine.

Regardless of trim level, all the way from L to the Premier Sedan, you’ll find the Cruze’s new staple engine under the hood. Along with being turbocharged, Variable Valve Timing also plays a part in the Cruze’s upgraded power and efficiency. With the VVT technology, the combustion process is refined further. This refinement creates a combustion that uses the optimal amount of fuel and air to trigger a spark, which results in better fuel efficiency. Essentially, it ensures that no fuel is wasted, which is why this engine can put out a rambunctious 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, with the fuel economy sitting at a possible best of 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway when equipped with an automatic transmission. The all-new 2016 Chevy Cruze can now sprint from 0-60 mph in a very respectable eight seconds.

Faster 0-60 mph times, more horsepower and torque, and more fuel-efficient than before. It’s rare, but a redesign that enhances the structure and engine of the vehicle itself can prove to be all-around successful.

The technology was upgraded on the new 2016 Cruze, too. In particular, Chevy decided to pay attention to the MyLink system and touchscreen display. Now standard with a seven-inch touchscreen and an available eight-inch screen, the MyLink system is quicker to react when a finger presses an icon, creating a far more intuitive touchscreen experience. Also, Chevy updated MyLink and ensured that it’s now compatible for both Android and iPhone users. Although Android Auto was on board before, Apple CarPlay is a new addition for 2016. Now, both phone owners can have a more finely-calibrated mobile integration experience.

Along with the upgrade to Chevy MyLink and the touchscreen display, other available features include rear heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and wireless phone charging. The old favorites like the 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot are back on board, as well as OnStar for accident assistance and other features like remote vehicle lock and unlock with your cell-phone. Finally, there are a few new safety features that were added for this generation as well, like blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist, and forward collision warning. All of which use radar and camera systems in order to automatically respond to the situation at hand.

With this new safety, entertainment, and comfort technology on board, the Cruze is sure to be even more popular with the tech fans.
