Ram trucks are definitely shaping up to be something else this year. The newly redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck made its first debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show and again showed up with Mopar during a Mopar and Ram webcast presentation at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show. There, they talked about the new Mopar catalog featuring over 200 new features for the Ram 1500. Going forward, Ram trucks are set to take on Ford, the world’s leader in light duty and heavy duty trucks in decades. Now, with new engines popping up on both, let’s take a look at both truck brands and do a little comparison of their engines.
2018 Ram 1500
Let’s look at the powertrain lineup of the 2018 Ram 1500 pickup truck, being that the 2019 Ram 1500 won’t be available for awhile. Three engines are available on 2018 Ram 1500 trucks – a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine, and a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine. Not too different from its 2019 lineup, aside from the to-be-determined return of the EcoDiesel and a new eTorque system that has been added for additional torque and hybrid capabilities.
The standard engine of the three is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with VVT, able to generate 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. With the eTorque system in the 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck, that torque capability comes out to 359 lb-ft of torque. When paired to the eight-speed automatic transmission and a 4×4 drivetrain, this engine on the 2018 Ram 1500 truck can get a fuel economy of 17/25 mpg city/highway. So far, so good.
Next up on the list is the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine, able to deliver a total of 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. When paired with the eight-speed automatic transmission, this engine can grant a fuel economy of 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Here’s hoping it returns to the 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck lineup.
Returning to the 2019 Ram 1500 light duty truck is the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 (with VVT and MDS), currently found on the 2018 Ram 1500 as well. Able to generate 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, this engine isn’t as strong as the EcoDiesel when it comes to towing. The eTorque system in the 2019 Ram 1500 truck will change that, adding an extra 130 lb-ft of torque. That will give trucks with the HEMI V8 a total of 540 lb-ft of torque! Amazing.
2018 Ford F-150
The 2018 Ford F-150 light duty pickup truck is available with four engines at the moment. Six if we count the to-be-released 3.0L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel engine and the Raptor DOHC 24-valve, High-Output 3.5L EcoBoost engine. Comparable to the three Ram 1500 engines above, the 2018 Ford F-150 light duty pickup truck can sport a new 3.3-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine. That’s twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT), a variation of variable valve timing (VVT) that alters the open/close valve lift events of an engine’s cylinders, optimizing it to increase the power output of the engine. This engine generates 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.
At this time, Ford has no diesel engine in the F-150 lineup. The EcoBoost engines are not to be mistaken for the same thing. They are turbocharged gasoline engines made to match the same horsepower and torque of engines that receive its air intake via atmospheric pressure, but with better fuel efficiency and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
A V8 engine is available on the 2018 Ford F-150 lineup and it’s a 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 engine that is able to deliver 395 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. It claims the “best-in-class” payload, but that’s only if properly equipped. Ford doesn’t go into defining what that means, but one can safely assume it needs a trailering package of some kind if it’s going to beat the payload of the 2018 Ram 1500 truck, touting another 20 lb-ft of torque over the 2018 Ford F-150.
Well there it is. Ford may be ruling the truck industry at the moment, but come 2019 their reign may just come to a final end. What do you think?
