People keep trying to talk up the Hyundai Palisade, but a lot of them are falling into that “New is Better” mindset. That isn’t always the truth. Take The Matrix sequels as a perfect example – what was that, seriously? Sometimes the original is the better contender, and when it comes to building out a larger SUV market, the 2020 Kia Telluride got their first and it’s not going anywhere. When looking for a large, three-row SUV of luxury, consumers know where to look – Kia Motors.

The 2020 Kia Telluride doesn’t have to boast luxury to look like a luxury SUV, and it surely has a nice starting price for such a large vehicle. Starting at $44,995 (plus destination fee) is pretty fair considering the competition. For some, the large size of the SUV may give an uneasy feeling, being that this is the largest SUV in the Kia Motors lineup, but the engineering team at Kia Motors has been doing a lot of fine-tuning over the years, and this large SUV drives like a crossover. Furthermore, it comes with various driving modes – Click into “Sport” and things get interesting, especially if you opted-in for all-wheel drive.

It would seem the 2020 Kia Telluride may also be benefitting from Kia Motors new drivetrain transfer case. Depending on the drive mode selected, “Eco” and “Smart” modes will send all the torque to the front wheels, whereas the “Comfort” and “Snow” settings will deliver 80-percent to the front wheels and 20-percent to the rear. Coming back to “Sport” mode, the power is split front/rear 65/35-percent. Like 4×4 drive systems, “Lock” treats all four wheels the same and splits up the torque evenly.

Parents looking to put their teen driver into a large box of metal “for safety” won’t need to worry about their little hooligan speeding down the highway. A decent powertrain sets up the stage under the hood, a 3.8-litre V6 that can generate up 291 horses and 262 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s enough torque to tow up to 5,000 pounds, enough for a small boat or even a jet ski in tow.

Inside, the cabin is pretty nice too. The seats are comfortable, and with the available panoramic sunroof, the driver and passengers can always enjoy the fresh air without it slapping them in the face with the windows down. From the driver seat, everything is within range with a profound center stack with all the controls one needs to make this SUV their optimal choice for a day on the road.

When it comes to technology, the 2020 Kia Telluride is the first vehicle to have an intercom system, called “Driver Talk”. This allows the driver and front passenger to speak to passengers all the way in the back without needing to turn their head or shout. There’s also an available 630-watt, 10-speaker Harman/Kardon system with Quantum Logic Surround Sound and Clari-Fi sound system to enjoy some tunes, and this comes with a “quiet mode” to keep the volume prominent in the front of the car in case someone in the back rather listen to headphones or is on the phone. A standard 10.25-inch colour touchscreen comes with a rear-view camera, and wireless charging for smartphones also comes standard.
