Kia Motors has been talking up some of its new models coming out for the 2020 and 2021 model years. Most notably and recently, it’s all about the new 2021 Kia Sorento sports utility vehicle (SUV). Entering a new generation, the Kia Sorento has received a number of updates and upgrades to bring it into the new decade of automotive technology – hopefully more eventful in a good way. Speaking of technology, we discussed some of the tech highlights of the new 2021 Kia Sorento. It would seem the fame has caught on, because recently, the new Sorento received “Das Goldene Lenkrad 2020”, also known as “Golden Steering Wheel 2020”, award. Every year, this is one of many automobile prizes sought after by automakers, always striving to beat the competition. The Golden Steering wheel is presented by AUTO BILD and BILD am SONNTAG, with the former being a leading German automobile magazine based in Hamburg, Germany, and the latter known as the largest-selling German national Sunday newspaper published in Berlin, Germany.
Like any publication, AUTO BILD and BILD am SONNTAG care about the readers, and the readers have a say in the winners when a publication has an awards list of sorts. I know we’re all a little tired to hear about voting, but it needs to be said – it was only after readers of the two publications voted for the fourth-generation of the Kia Sorento that the SUV made it into the final round for the ‘Large SUVs’ category. That is to say, the winners aren’t just based on editors of the magazine, real consumers also play a part in making the decision. Then, a jury of 18 put the vehicles through a final round of the competition across the DEKRA Lausitzring track, a racetrack in northeast Germany.
After putting the vehicles to the test, the new Kia Sorento gained the highest number of points in its category. This led to a victory for the Kia Sorento over the other two finalists in the SUV category, the Aston Martin DBX and BMW X6. We know Kia Motors vehicles are great, but this is saying a lot. Here’s what Tom Drechsler, Head of AUTO BILD and Editor-in-Chief Auto of the BILD group, had to say about the new Kia SUV.
“The predecessor was alr4eady good, but the new Sorento is an evolution. It now drives just as smoothly as it looks. There’s plenty of space, smart interior details, voice control, safety features – things that can be enjoyed everywhere. And that’s not just my opinion, but also that of the jury. Congratulations on a very well-deserved Goldenes Lenkrad 2020!” – Drechsler
Don’t forget that not only is this the new generation of the Kia Sorento for 2021, but the SUV is also getting a new green powertrain option. Ever-growing the alternative fuel options in its lineup, Kia Motors added a plug-in hybrid option to the 2021 Kia Sorento, powered by a new Turbo Hybrid Engine (HEV), available on its own S and EX trims. Made up of a 1.6L 4-cylinder GDI Turbo combustion engine and a self-charging 1.5 kWh battery that powers a 44.2kW electric motor, the turbo hybrid engine has a considerable power output of 221 horsepower. Although the 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid is only available in FWD, the 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid has an estimated combined fuel economy of 37 mpg and consumers can expect a combined range of 620 miles, give or take thanks to regenerative braking.
