The time has come, the world’s most capable SUV — the Jeep Wrangler — is now available with a diesel powertrain. The 2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel is said to be the most fuel-efficient Wrangler variant and it’s also got the highest torque rating. Fuel economy ratings are unavailable for the time being, but Jeep assures its diehard fans that the EcoDiesel Wrangler is set to provide them with the highest driving range on one tank of fuel.
The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine is available on four-door Wranglers only and is rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. As an additional fuel-saving asset, the engine is also equipped with engine stop-start (ESS) technology. An engine change wasn’t the only thing Jeep had up its sleeve, the brand also added a new TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission that’s calibrated for low RPM shifts to better handle the on- and off-road challenges. The transmission offers more than 40 individual shift maps that work to optimize shift points to better fuel economy ratings, along with overall performance and 4×4 capability.
“One of the most common questions consumers have asked us over the last few years has been, ‘Will you please offer a Jeep Wrangler Diesel?’, and I’m pleased to answer that with a resounding, ‘Yes!’,” stated Jim Morrison, Head of Jeep Brand — North America. “I recently drove the new Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel on the Rubicon Trail and can unquestionably attest to its incredible off-road capability. Combining that unmatched off-road capability with the vehicle’s fun-to-drive on-road performance, best-ever Wrangler fuel economy and incredible driving range underwrite the fact that our customers knew exactly what they were asking for,” added Morrison.
The new-and-improved EcoDiesel engine is designed to deliver increased torque and horsepower, minimal noise levels, vibration and harshness, along with superb fuel economy. Some of the changes that improve the EcoDiesel’s dynamic include the use of dual overhead camshafts with four valves per cylinder, 60-degree angles between cylinder banks, and the engine block is cast with compacted graphite iron. The compacted graphite iron component serves to strengthen the engine, dampens vibrations, and weighs less than gray cast iron. There’s even a compacted graphite iron bedplate that improves the block’s rigidity.
All Jeep wrangler EcoDiesel trims — Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon — come equipped with third-generation Dana 44 front and rear heavy-duty axles. Jeep offers two different transfer cases depending on the buyer’s needs, there’s the Command-Trac part-time two-speed transfer case on the Sport and Sahara trims, and a Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case on the Rubicon trim. The 2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel goes on sale in December of 2019.
