2017 Chevrolet Silverado

Chevrolet is in a war with many other competitors with sport trucks and powerful vehicles. There is power, style, and power. Yes, we mentioned it twice, because although the Chevrolet Silverado is pretty conservative when it comes to looks, it still has what a truck driver wants - towing power. Plus, the amount of configuration options on the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado are nearly endless.

Configurations

The amount of configurations on a 2017 Silverado 1500 feel endless:

  • Two drivetrains - rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive
  • Three cab sizes - regular, double, or crew cab
  • Three truck bed/cargo box sizes - standard truck bed (also called cargo box) (78.7”), short box (69.33”), or a long box (97.77”)
  • Eight trims in total, availability varying on cab size - WT, LS, Custom, LT, LT Z71, LTZ, LTZ Z71, High Country
  • Three engines - A 4.3-liter, 5.3-liter, or 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine
  • Two transmissions - 6-speed automatic or 8-speed automatic

Engine Types

In terms of the three engines, EcoTec3 is the name used on General Motors’ small block generation 5 engines, all of which have direct fuel injection, a multi-displacement system, and continuous variable valve timing. These are all intricate processes for optimizing the power and fuel economy of an engine.

Direct Fuel Injection, also known as gasoline direct injection (GDI), is a process where the gasoline is highly pressurized and injected via a fuel line directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder.

A Multi-Displacement System (MDS) was developed by Chrysler for use on V8 and V6 engines, and when maintaining a steady speed, half of the cylinders are deactivated to conserve fuel.

CVVT combats the traditional variable valve timing (VVT) process by using an infinite adjustment of valve timing to suit all speeds and conditions versus the traditional one timing adjustment per speed.

The horsepower, torque, and fuel economy of all three engines is as follows:

  • 4.3-liter - 285-horsepower, 305 lb-ft of torque, and 18/24 mpg city/highway
  • 5.3-liter - 355-horsepower, 383 lb-ft of torque, and 16/23 mpg city/highway
  • 6.2-liter - 420-horsepower, 460 lb-ft of torque, and 15/21 mpg city/highway

Towing Payload

Towing and payload can be a little tough to figure out by looking up the specs on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, but with a little digging, here’s how it looks.

  • The maximum payload on a regular cab with a standard box, two-wheel drive, and the 4.3-liter EcoTec3 engine is 4,510 pounds.
  • On a double cab with the same configurations and the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 engine is 1,900 pounds, 2,250 if the NHT suspension is installed*.
  • The crew cab drops a bit, same configurations, but with the 6.2-liter engine installed, a payload of 1,670 pounds, 2,000 pounds with the NHT suspension.

The towing capacity for the Silverado 1500 ranges from 5,500 to 9,400 pounds depending on the configurations.

Exterior Features

On the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 there are just as many optional features as there are configurations. To name a few - tubular assist steps in four or six inches and black or chrome, a bed liner, splash guards, a soft tonneau cover, wheel locks, deep tinted glass, Cargo Box LED lighting, outside heated power adjustable mirrors, and several aesthetic choices. Of course, depending on the configuration and trim, some of those features may be standard. There are also several optional packages, including two trailering packages.

Some standard exterior features are purely aesthetic, such as solar absorbing tinted glass, cargo area lamps, and all-season blackwall tires. Depending on configuration and trim, drivers can get a Silverado 1500 riding on 17-, 18, or 20-inch wheels. A full-size 17-inch spare wheel comes standard on all trims.

Interior Features

Due to the many configurations and trims, the interior features are spread out a bit. Single-zone manual air conditioning comes standard and dual-zone automatic climate control is available on select trims. A front 40/20/40 split-bench seat comes standard, but upper-level trims may have a 40/20/40 split-bench with underseat storage and trimmed in leather. Crew cab Silverado 1500 trucks come standard with a 60/40 rear-folding bench seat.

The upper-level trims also get a leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, the option to have a heated steering wheel, heated driver and passenger seats, and a rear vision camera (standard on upper-level trims, optional on others). Remote keyless entry is another standard on upper-level trims and it is available as an add-on on the base trims. An instrumentation 6-gauge cluster and driver information center are standard throughout the lineup. Several packages are also available.

Entertainment

The tech in the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 truck is pretty straightforward. The standard audio system comes with a 4.2-inch color screen with four speakers. The option to upgrade to Chevrolet MyLink with a 7-inch color touch screen is available on several trims. On upper-level trims, Chevrolet MyLink with an 8-inch color touch  screen and a six-speaker system comes standard. The option to upgrade to a Bose sound system or add navigation is available on upper-level trims too. Bluetooth for the phone comes standard on the all trims but the base trim (optional).

Safety Features and Warranty

Safety features are widespread on the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, starting with dual-stage front and side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger curtain airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags, stability and traction systems, a Teen Driver mode, and tire-pressure monitoring system standard. Advanced features found as an option or standard on trims past the base are forward collision alert, lane keep assist, front and rear park assist, low-speed forward automatic braking, and a theft-deterrent system.

All new Chevrolet vehicles are backed by a three-year or 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty (100,000 miles for qualified fleet purchases). Additionally, the vehicle’s exterior is protected by a three-year or 36,000-mile corrosion warranty, six-year or 100,000-mile rust-through warranty.
