2016 Jeep Patriot - Miami, FL

Looking for a SUV on the smaller side, but not sure what to grab? Consider the 2016 Jeep Patriot. It’s smaller than a Wrangler or a Cherokee, so if you don’t like handling large vehicles this is the way to go. Primarily because it’s a Jeep — which means it’s a built to last, and has the performance to power you down the highway or over the trails in the woods. Lastly, it has a lot of the great state-of-the-art technology features found on other vehicles. Unlike the old days, Jeeps are designed to be much more than just a go-anywhere-vehicle.

With models like the Patriot in the lineup, that statement rings especially true.

Design

As far as the looks go, the Patriot resembles a pint-sized version of a Cherokee from the ‘90s. Therefore, it’s your basic Jeep design - nothing flashy, and all about practicality. However, this is refreshing, seeing as a lot of automakers favor a flashy looking vehicle over a practical one. The 2016 Patriot has the same rugged Jeep brand styling that you know and love with traditional exterior features, like the famous body-color seven-slotted grille, and large round headlights. Overall, the design is a modernized version of what consumers expect a Jeep vehicle to look like.

This is absolutely fine because the design isn’t the main focus of this Jeep. Instead, the Patriot is proudly on the smaller side of the model scale, because it has a few advantages exclusive only to smaller vehicles. First, it’s much lighter than its larger brothers, and coupled with the smaller size, it makes handling a breeze. This effectively makes it the perfect vehicle for the consumer looking for the capability and practicality of the SUV, without dealing with the hassles often associated with a larger vehicle. Also, it’s naturally more aerodynamic and fuel-efficient thanks to its smaller size and weight.

Don’t let the design fool you, though. The Patriot can still perform well both on and off the road. It might not have a Trailhawk trim, but it still can come equipped with the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Group.

Performance

Equipped with the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Group, the 2016 Jeep Patriot gains some decent off-road capability. It’s able to power through almost any type of environment, and even do some minor rock crawling. This group takes the already stellar capability of the Freedom Drive I group and adds on selectable off-road mode with Hill Descent Control. The grade sensing features that boost the crawl ratio coupled with the HDC are what give the Patriot its minor rock-crawling capability and Off-Road LOCK allows the Patriot to go through deep snow, or even ford 19 inches of water. Rounding off the more important off-road features, the Electronically Controlled Coupling found on the Freedom Drive I group monitors wheel slippage and then transfers torque to the axle that will benefit from it most. It can even be locked 50/50 front/rear to provide the driver with added low-speed capability and control. In the end, it gets the Patriot Latitude trim the Trail Rated Tough badge, which is Jeep’s proof of their vehicle’s off-roading prowess.

Thanks to the modern advancements in engine technology, the Patriot can perform just as well on the road as it does off the road courtesy of two well-rounded engine choices: a 2.0-liter DOHC 16V engine, and a 2.4-liter World engine. The first engine choice puts out a healthy 158 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque. When this engine is paired with a two-wheel drive model, it’s able to get up to 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway; which translates to a range of 400-plus miles on one tank of gas. The 2.4-liter World engine kicks the power up a bit and puts out 172 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque. When naturally paired to the five-speed manual transmission, it’s able to get up to 23 mpg city and 29 mpg highway — slightly less when it’s paired to an automatic transmission.

It’s clear that Jeep wanted to make sure their smaller vehicles could perform just as well as their bigger and more well-known brothers and it’s also apparent that they succeeded. The performance doesn’t stop there, however, and the Patriot is also equipped with some technology accessed from inside the cabin that makes traveling through hazardous conditions — on or off the road — a breeze.

Technology

Traveling on hazardous roads or trails can be tough, and sometimes having back-up can make all the difference. Thankfully, the technology features found inside the 2016 Jeep Patriot are all the back-up you need. The available Radio 430 Nav is so much more than just a combination of ways to keep yourself entertained; it’s highly practical, too. With pre-installed Garmin GPS technology, it provides an intuitive interface and navigation system with turn-by-turn directions or a topographical map view of where you are located. Whether you are trying to find your way back home out of the woods or are looking for directions to a friend's house, you can get there quickly and efficiently.

Also, safety features like the ParkView Rear back-up camera prove useful in both urban and rural environments. Simply turn on the camera, and experience an easy way to back out onto the neighborhood street, or away from that creek that ended up being too deep to cross. Automatic headlamps help ensure that you will always have light, which even turn on in dimly lit situations for added convenience; so when you are out on the trails and the Patriot decides it’s getting too dark, it will let you know.

Those are only a couple of the technology features helping the Patriot make life safer and easier, on and off the roads.
